I COMBINED BEN DIN Gr AND CUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed September 25, 1917. Serial No. 193,130.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RoDnnioK MCOLU'RE and CLAUDE OwnNs,'citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Fort Laramie, in the county of Laramie and State of WVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bending and Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined bending and cutting machines and has for its obect the provision of novel means whereby a single machine of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction may be utilized as a bending machine and as a cutting mechanism for metal or other bars, the said for its object the provision of novel means whereby a plunger coacts with a die for bending the material and whereby the said plunger likewise coacts with the stationary member to comprise a cutting mechanism which will sever bars of different sizes into appropriate lengths.
A further object of this invention is to provide a plunger having means whereby it may be reciprocated through manually operated means which requires relatively small power in proportion to the work and invention having results attained .by the movement of the plunger. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of-construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing ,the invention in detail, refence will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of a device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 illustrates a top plan view; and Fig. 3 illustrates a section on the line 33 Fig. 2.
In these drawings 5 denotes a bed plate I and 6 a jaw or bumper or abutment, which may be formed integral with or secured to the base, the said member 6 having a seat or recess 7 in one face to receive a die 8, it being understood that the dies may be provided with shaping jaws 9 of different configurations according to the work to be '15 and 16, which rise parts may performed and they may be interchangeable so that theone machine may be used for producing different results.
The bed plate 5 is preferably provided with recesses 10 which constitute seats for anti-friction members 11, such as rollers and a plunger 12 extends longitudinally-of the bed plate and rests on the anti-friction members so that it may be moved to operate with the die.
The plunger is held in operative position andguided by or between standards 13, 14, from the bed plate and which may be integral with it or secured to it in any way, a preferred con struction being that'the bed plate be clovetailed transversely as at 17 and 18 and the standards carried by the plates 19 and 20 which fit in the dove- tails 17 and 18 respectively, since by this arrangement, the be disassembled and reassembled and if a part becomes impaired or broken, it can be renewed without undue expense.
The pairs of standards 18 and 14 are spaced apart and anti-friction rollers 21 and '22 are interposed, which anti-friction rollers are mounted on members such as bolts 23 which are supported on the said standards. The standards 15 and 16 are also "spaced apart and an anti-friction roller'24 is 1nterposed and supported by a member 25 such as a bolt extending through the standards 1.5 and 16.
The anti-friction members 21, 22 and 24 engage the upper edge of the plunger, thus preventingvertical movement of the plunger when being operated to bend material or cut it. Near the end of the plunger remote from the die, the said plunger has a recess 26 which constitutes a seat for a cam 27, which cam is mounted on a pivot 28 extending between and supported by the standards 15 and 16. The said cam has an operating handle 29 which may be manipulated by an operator and the cam is intended to act with the walls of the recess 26 to move the plunger inwardly or outwardly according to the direction of rotation of the cam.
In order to utilize the plunger as one member of a cutting mechanism, the upper edge preferably of the said plunger has seats or recesses 80 and 31 of different dimensions or sizes so that it will receive the material or bars of difi'erent sizes and the walls of these recesses are preferably beveledslightly so. that their edges will perform a shearing action when coacting with the stationary member constituting another element of the cutter to be presently eX- )lained. It is obvious that the recesses 30 Jand' 31 may be multiplied or diminished Within predetermined bounds so that they may be utilized in connection with materials of different cross sectional as an element of the cutter With a stationary blade orbar 32 which has recesses 33 and 34, the additional recesses corresponding tothe recesses of the plunger, and this stationary member may be held between the standards 1.3, 14:, slides 15 and 16 so that the plunger or reciprocaites along the side of the station-' art will be able to pract ce the invention from the foregoing description and the illustration.
We claim: I 1. In a co cutter,
bined bending machine and a base having an abutment near one end, a die bearing against the saidabutment, said base having recesses therein, anti-friction members in-the said recesses, a plunger movable on the antifriction members, said plunger having recesses in its upper edge,
"the Walls of the said recesses being diagonally disposed, means for guiding the plunger with relation to the die, said plunger having a recess near one end, a cam pivotally mounted to operate in the last mentioned re cess and adapted to coact with the walls of the recess for moving the plunger, ,and a dimensions. Thecombined cutter and plunger ccact's stationary member having recesses corresponding with the recesses of'the'plunger and adapted by the operation of the plunger.
2. In a combined bending machine and cutter, a base having an abutment near one end, a die bearing against the said abut ment, said base shaving recesses therein, antifriction members in the said recesses, a plunger movable on the anti-friction members, said plunger having recesses in its upper edge, the walls of said recesses being diagonally disposed so as to' form cutting edges, means for guiding the plunger with:-
having a V end, a die bearing against the said abut-' lnent, said base having recesses therein,
antifriction members in the said recesses,
a plungermovable on the anti-friction menr bers, said plunger having recesses in its upper edge, the walls of said recesses being diagonally disposed so as to form cutting edges, means for guiding the plunger Withrelation to the die, said plunger having a recess near oneend, a cam plvotally mounted adapted to coact with the walls of the recess to receive material to be cut" the last mentioned re for moving the plunger, and pairs of standards rising from the base comprisingguides for the plunger, anti-friction members tween the said standards bearing 'on the upper edge of the plunger, means extending betwen the pairs of standards for supporting the anti-friction members, and means r'or' rotating the cam.
