To all whom it may concern:
Be itlrnown that I, HYRUM Trronsmv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Annabella,inthe county of Sevier and State of lltah,haveinvented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Sleighs, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to sleighs, and more particularly to a sleigh provided with automatic braking means.
One ofthe'main objects of-the invention is to'provide 'asleigh'of the'character stated of simple construction and operation. A furtherobjectis'toprovide a sleigh having plungers operative through the sleigh runners for braking purposes and means for automatically raising or lowering these plungers according to whether the draft animals are pulling or holding back, 1 further objectis to provide a sleigh having a slidably mounted tongue and connections between this tongue and the plungers for lowering the plungers when the tongue is moved toward the rear of the vehicle and raising the plungers when the tongue is moved in a forward direction. Further ob- 'jects will appear from the detailed descrip' tion.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a sleigh constructed in accordance with my invention.

The front bob A is connected by the reach pole B to the rear bob C in the usual manner. Front bob A is provided with the spaced runners 1 and 2 connected at their centers by the transverse beam 3 and at their forward ends by the bar 1 which is reduced at each end to provide a trunnion 5 rockable in the ends of the runners. Two spaced forwardly extending blocks 6 and 7 are secured to the front face of bar 4. These blocks are supported. at their forward ends by a sleeve 8 fitting snugly about the same having the inclined braces 9 secured to bar 4:. Sleeve 8 and blocks 6 and 7 slidably receive the rearward portion of the pole or tongue 10, the bar 4 being provided with a central opening to accommodate the tongue and being braced by the upper and lower straps 11 and 12 secured thereto. The inner end of tongue 10 is bifurcated to receive the forward end of a link 13 pivotally secured thereto. The inner or rearward end of link 13 is pivotallysecured, as at 141-, to the upper end of an arm 15 secured'to a transverse shaft 16 rockablymounted in the forwardly projecting ears 17 of vertical guide casings 18 secured to each end of the transverse beam 3. A plunger 19 is slidably mounted in each guide case 18. This plunger is provided with a forwardly directed rack 20 which meshes with a quadrant secured on the end of shaft 16. As will be noted more particularly from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, plunger 8 is provided with a laterally extending flange at each side of rack 20. These flanges-lit snugly in the lateral. guide grooves provided at each sideof the guide casing 18. These flanges thus cooperate with the casing to guidethe plunger during its vertical movement also serving to brace the plunger so as to effectually prevent bending or distortion thereof. Plunger 19 is further provided, on its lower end, with a detachable braking shoe or block 22. This plunger is operative through a suitable opening extending'through the sleigh runner.
VVhen' the team of draft animals is pulling the sleigh, the tongue 10 will be moved forward thus rocking shaft 16 forward and downward so as to raise the plungers 19 into inoperative position. When the sleigh is traveling down hill, so that the tongue is forced backward, shaft 16 will be rocked rearwardly thus forcing the plungers 19 downward so as to cause them to project below the runners thus exerting a braking effect on the sleigh. This operation of the plungers is automatic and does not require any attention on the part of the driver. The forward movement of tongue 10 is positively limited by the bolt 23 inserted through the hammer strap 24 for receiving the double tree for attaching the draft animals. The rear bob C may be provided with similar plungers 19 operated by quadrants 21 secured on the transverse shaft 25 operated by an arm 26 and a pull rod 27 connected to a hand lever 28 pivoted on the front bolster 29 and secured in adjustment by a combplate or rack 30 secured to thesleigh body 31. As will be noted, the shaft 25 is positioned in rear of plungers 19 so that these plungers may be depressed by forward movement of the hand lever 28. This is a matter of convenience and it will be evident that the rear plungers may be positioned to the forward plungers, if de- '22 of plunger 19 removable, the member may be replaced when Worn.
What I claim is L 1. In a sleigh, spaced runners, a transverse beam secured thereto, plungers slidably mounted on said beam adjacent each end thereof and operative through the run- 11ers, said runners being provided with apertures to accommodate the plungers, said plungers being provided with rack bars, a transverse shaft rocka'bly mounted onthe beam, pinions secured on said shaft adjacent each end thereof and meshing with the rack of the plungers, a tongue secured to said runners adjacent the forward ends thereof and slidable longitudinally of the sleigh, and connections between said shaft and tongue for rocking the shaft in such direction as to more the plungers downwardly when the tongue is moved rearwardly and for rocking the shaft in the reverse direction when the tongue is moved forwardly.

In a sleigh, spaced runners, a transverse beam secured on said runners, vertically disposed guide casings secured to the front face of said beam adjacent each end thereof, plungers slidable in said casings each provided with a central rack and laterally projecting flanges, said casings being provided with lateral grooves for receiving said flanges so as to guide and brace the plungers, a transverse shaft rockably supported by said casings, pinions secured on the shaft at each end thereof and meshing with said racks, a tongue secured to the forward ends of the runners and slidable longitudinally of the sleigh, and connections between said tongue and shaft for rocking the shaft in accordance with movement of the tongue.
