Be it known that I JAMES H. WmsoN a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Cilicago, in the county of Cook and S-tate of Illinois, have vinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification:y
This invention relates to metal cans or drums which are adapted for shipping paint or other similar material, and relates parl ticularly to the top or closure for the same.

n mately rig It has heretofore been 'proposed Ito use metal cans for shipping paint or the like, but it has been .found exceedingly difiicuilt to provide a can of this character with a top or closure which may be readily put in p ace, and which will not leak when the cans are shipped or handled. For this reason it has been more or less common to make the larger containers or drums of wood.
The object of the present invention is to provide a can or drum with a tight top or closure which may be readily placed in osition and securely held by means of suita le fastening devices, which devices may be bent to locking position without the necessity of special tools.

As illustrated in these drawings, 3 repre-l sents `a can or drum., which is preferably provided with outwardly projecting beads or rings 4, which extend outl a suicient distance so that the drum may be rolled upon the same, and so that they will protect they outwardly extending edge of the cover. It will be understood that the bottom portion of the drum may be made in the same manner as the top ortion shown, but is referably made with the bottom of ordmary form of construction. The upper end of the can is provided with an inwardly projecting ring or ange 5, which is preferably formed integrally with the can. As shownrin the drawings, this flange is formed by pressing the metal inwardly and folding it to form a' ledge or plrojection which is at approxit angles to the walls of the can.
The upper edge is provided with a plurality of projections 6, which are also referabl made integrally with Athe can. 'Ihe top is provided with slots or holes A8 for receiving the projections 6, such slots being s aced to correspond with the spacing of t e projections. The outer edge of the to is preferably bent back to form a stilf boeg or edge 9. The top is also provided with an inwardly extending ring or lprojection 10, which ts closely within the upper end of the can 3, and extends down to a point adjacent to the inwardly extending flange 5. The ring or projection 10 is preferably made integrally with the cover by formin a groove therein so as to provide a ange portion 11, which fits against the inner surface of the upper part of the can, and a horizontal, flan e 12 which is opposed to the flange 5. resilient ring or gasket 13 is inter osed between the flanges 5 and 12.

By means of this arrangement I provide a shipping can or drum which has proven to be relatively cheap in construction, and very satisfactor in use, as the cover may be readily 4app ied and there is little or no possibility of leakage. It will also be observed that chan may suggest themselves as comin wit the scope of this invention, and t erefore I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, except as ecified in the following claims, in which claim:
1. In a container of the character set forth, the vcombination of a bod I having an integrally fornied fol ed flange extendin inwardly adjacent to one end thereof, t e upper surface of said flange being iat and at substantlally right angles to said 'body portion, a cover itting closely in said end and having an inwardly extending flange with its lower face substantially` portion v in position', and a gasket between said anges.
