To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL BEN EZRA, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, but has taken out first papers to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Board Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for drawing boards and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and convenient means for fastening on the back of a drawing board to enable said board to be adjusted at any desired inclination for use by a draftsman and which may be folded flat against the underside of the board when the latter is to be employed in a horizontal position.

With the above as the principal obj cct in view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, in which:

In the drawings, 10 indicates a drawing board of the usual kind employed by draftsmen and of any desired size which as here shown, may have cleats 11 on the back thereof near opposite edges of the board. Between the cleats near the back edge of the board which by preference will be the top or upper edge, are fastened two hinge members 12 to the under side of the board by screws 13. Each hinge member comprises a flat plate adapted to bear against the board and is provided with a projecting socket 14 having a horizontal hole therethroiigh the axis of which is parallel to the top edge of the board and the axis of the two holes being in line with each other. These hinge members may be made of cast metal or, as shown in the drawings, of sheet metal having two parallel cuts 15 made in the platenear one edge thereof .and the strip of metal between the cuts pressed outwardly as at 16, Fig. 4, to form sockets.

Pivotally mounted on the hinge members 12 is a U-shaped bail 17 preferably made of wire with a straight horizontal portion a and end portions 1) at right'angles thereto and of a length suflicient to elevate the top of the board to the highest angle desired. The free ends of the upturned portions 7) are again bent at right angles toward and in line with each other as at c and inserted in the sockets 1 1 of the hinge members 12. At the center of the part a of bail. 17 is a short upwardly projecting lug 18 for a purpose to be described later.

At the foot of the board on the under side and in the vertical central line of the same is fastened another hinge member 12 similar to the other two with the exception that spaced a short distance from the socket 1 1 is a projecting lug 19 which serves as a stop to prevent escape from said hinge member of a brace rod 20 having one end 21 bent at right angles to hinge or swing in the socket 14: while its outer end is preferably flattened laterally and its lower edge provided with a series of notches 22 any one of which may engage the lug 18 on the bail 17 to lock the same in position for supporting the board at the desired inclination.

In the position shown in Fig. 2, the board when supported on a flat surface will be at its greatest inclination but when it is desired to lower the upper end of the board to bring the same nearer horizontal, the brace bar 20 is raised to disconnect engaging notch 22 with the lug 18 and the bail swung toward the board until it reaches such an angle with the board as will support the board at the inclination desired by the draftsman whereupon the adjacent notch 22 will again engage the lug 18 and the support securely held at a suitable angle.

When the board is to be used in a horizontal position or flat upon a table or desk, the brace 20 and bail 17 will be folded flat against the bottom or under side of the board and being made of light but strong wire these parts will fold in the space between the under side of the board and the bottom of the cleats 11 so that the board will rest flat upon the desk.

When in elevated position as in Fig. 2, triangles, pencils, rules and other small articles may be slipped beneath the board out of the way when not in use.

What is claimed is:

1. Means for attachment to the back of a. drawing board for supporting the same' upon a table at different angles to the top of the table and freely movable. over the surface thereof, saidmeans comprising a U- shaped bail adapted to be hinged to the under side of the drawing board at the upper edge thereof, and a brace bar adapted to be hinged at one end near the lower edge of the board and having 'a plurality of notches in its other end in any one of which notches the bail may engage and be held at an angle to the board and the board at the desired inclination, said bail and brace bar being wholly within the edges of the board and-foldable against the under sidethereof to permit the board to rest fiat upon the table. 2; An attachment for drawing boards comprising a bail hinged to the under side of the board 'at'the upper edge thereof, a brace bar hinged in the center of the said side of the board near the lower edge and having a series of notches on the under side of the free edge, and a lug on said bail to engage any one of said notches and support said bail and the board at various inclinations, said bail and brace being foldable against the under side of the board within the lateral edges thereof to permit the board to restfiat upon a suitable support.
