'Be it known that I, DAVID F. YoUNeBnoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useflil Locking-and Operating System for J ail-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to locking and operating systems for jail doors, and its ob ect is to provide a construction whereby each and every door in the system can be locked, unlocked and operated altogether,
or any one, two or more doors can be locked, unlocked and operated without disturbing the other doors of the system.
While the invention is applicable to either sliding or swinging doors, the description .will be confined to sliding doors to avoid 'doors of the system.
The various operations are accomplished by means of mechanisms having their controlling ends all located in a box or compartment which may be situated on the outside of the cage wall at the front or entrance end of a prisoners corridor. The corridor door is also located adjacent to the control box or compartment,- and is locked by means of mechanism having its controlling end within the control box.
The operating mechanisms are all lodged within bOXes-or conduits which may be made of heavy steel plates securely fastened together with all parts hidden and protected from access by prisoners. The invention alsocontemplates the use of safety devices preventing the accidental leaving of any door in an unlocked position'or condition when the control box isclosed and locked, the arrangementbeing such that the control box cannot be closed unless all the doors are either closed or opened and locked.
At the same time, there is provision for v access to any parts in order to make repairs that may become necessary.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the further understanding that while the drawingsshow a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.

Fig. 9 is a top plan View of one of the cell doors with adjacent portions of the cell, and
showing the lock bar for the cell door in cred as of the ordinary construction employed in steel jail systems, the two cells shown being indicative of any number of cells in a corridor. .Each cell is provided with a door 2 hung from rollers 3 capable of traveling upon a track 4, which latter is of sufficient length to permit the sliding of the door 2 between the closed and open posit-ion. Such an arrangement is common in 10.1 jail construction and needs no particular description. These doors are indicated as sliding doors, but the invention is capable of application to swinging doors, wherefore it is not to be considered as confined to sliding doors, although for simplicity of description and illustration a showing of swinging doors has been omitted.- Each door 2 is ,providednear the top and bottom with keepers in the form of bars 5 each having notches 6 for the reception of a lock bar 7 movable through a suitable protecting cas-' ing 8 such as is frequently used in jail door constructions, and hence requiring no special description. The purpose of the casing 8 is, of course, to shield the lock bar 7 from access by prisoners.
Each lock bar 7 is hung from one end of a bell crank lever 9 shown in the drawings as in the form of a triangular plate, although such particular arrangement is not obligatory.. The lever 9 is pivotally sup ported within a protecting casing 10 by means of a pivot pin 11, the casing extending along the length of the series'oi cells 1 between the tops of the cell walls and the top or ceiling of the corridor in which the cells are located. The end of the lever 9 remote from that connected to the lock bar 7 is pivotally connected to one end of a bar 12, the other end of which is made fast to a plate 13 by means of bolts 14 extending through slots 15 in the bar 12, so that there may be a limited amount of adjustment between the bar 12 and plate 13. This adjustment may be brought about by an angle bracket 16 on the plate and an adjusting bolt 17 engaging the bracket 16 and an angle end 18 on the bar 12.
The plate 13 carries an angle lug 19 in position to engage in a notch 20 in the corresponding edge of a bar 21 of a length to extend through the casing 10 throu bout the length of the series of cells. The ar 21 is. carried through an end plate 22defining the corresponding end of a seriesofcells, and to this end plate there is made fast a box 23 constituting a receptacle for hand levers 24, 25, and other structures provided for the control of the locking and operating mechanisms for the doors. The box 23 may be termed a lever box, since the manipulatingdevices are usually levers. ,The box 23 is provided with a door 26 whlch may be secured to the box in any suitable manner, as

not peculiar to this invention and have been heretofore proposed, it is deemed unnecessary to show the mounting of the door 26 and the manner of fastening it in the closed Each lever 24 and 25 has a latch dog 27 and a manipulating hand member 28, such as is customary in levers of the type shown. The lever 25 is shown in Fig. 2 provided with a rack bar 29 to hold the lever in adjusted positions. Tt'will be understood that the lever 24 may be similarly equipped, as is customary, but such equipment is hidden in the showing of Fig. 2.
When the doors are to be locked, say, in the closed position, the manipulating end of the lever 24 is moved to that part of the box 23 remote from the door 26, thereby causing the bar 21 to be moved toward the box 23.
This movement may be considered as having been participated in by the bar 12 and angle or bell crank lever 9, thus causin "the lock bar 7 to lower and engage in one o the notches 6 of the bar 5. In this manner any one of the doors 2, or all of them, may be locked in either the open or closed position. In Fig. 2 it is assumed that the lever 24 has been moved in the direction to unlock the door there shown, and while the door 26 of the lever box 23 is shown closed, it may be assumed that this door is open for the purpose of permitting access to the levers.
Within and extending lengthwise of the casing 10 is another bar 29 similar to the bar 21 and constituting a master door-propelling bar, the bar 21 serving as a master lock-operating bar, while the bars 12, one for so that on rocking thelever 25 the bar 29 may be reciprocated longitudinally. The bar 29 is provided at suitable intervals with notches 34, one for each door, and into which notch there is movable a lug 35' on another bar 36, one for each door, which bar at one end is connected by a pivot pin 37 to the intermediate point of a lazy tongs structure 38. Each bar 36 constitutes a supplemental connectin bar between the master bar 29 and the (ibor 2 to which such bar 36 is'individual. One end of the lazy tongs is pivotally mountedon a bracket support 39 de pending from the top of the casing 10, and at the other end to a-plate 40 fast to the top of the corresponding door 2. The arrangement is such that on moving the master door-propelling bar 29 lengthwise with a.
lug 34 in the notch 35, motion is imparted through the bar 36 .to the lazy tongs structure, which acting as a motion multiplying sition and the lever 25 is pushed back into the box away from the door 26. That end of the rod 41 remote from the llIlk 331s pivotally connected to one arm 43 of a rock shaft 44 mounted in the box 23, and this rock shaft has another arm 45 at an angle to the arm 43 and is pivotally connected to a rod 46 mounted to slide in lugs 47 appropriately located in the box 23. The rod 46 terminates in a head 48 so situated as to be in the path of the door 26 under circumstances to be described. A spring 49 on the rod 46 between two of the lugs 47 and engaging a pin 50 traversing the rod, imparts to ita constant tendency to move in the direction of the door 26.
In order to ain access to the manipulating members 1n'the box 25, it is first necessary to open the door 26, which releases the head 48 of the rod 46 and the sprlng 49 then 1 projects the rod, thereby rocking theshaft 44 and withdrawing the rod 41 from its seat in the notch 42, thus releasing the lever 25 to manipulation, making it necessary to always close the cell door before the lever 25 may be returned to its first position and the head 48 moved into the box 23, so that the door 26 may be closed. except that certain mechanism is provided whereby the door 2 may be left in the open locked position and the levers 24 and 25 be returned to their first positions to permit the closing of the door 26, since each lever is under the control of a rod 41 carried by the rock shaft 44 and under the control of and controlling the rod 46.
In order to accurately adjust the connection between the bar 36 and the lug35, so that it may always properly fit the notch 34, the bar 36 is a two-part bar having one part 36 terminating in an angle extremity 51 connected by a bolt 52 to a bracket 53 on the main part of the bar 36, the arrangement being similar to the connection between the bar 12 and the plate 13 as already described. This arran ement permits a proper change in the effective length of both bars 12 and 36 to accurately position the lugs 19 and 35 to the notches 20 and 34, respectively.
Connected by a pivot pin 54 on each plate 13 is one end of a rock plate 55 individual to said plate 13 and operating as an angle or bell crank lever having a pivot support 56 on the casing 10 at a point below the respective bar 36. The plate 55 carries a roller 57 in underriding relation to tlte bar 36, which latter is held in proper relation to the plate 55 by a keeper 58 on the plate 55. The pin 54 is movable for a short distance with relation to the plate 55 in a slot 59 in the plate, and furthermore the plate 55 is guided by a pin 60 on the casing 10 extending through a slot 61 in the plate. Considering the single door 2 and the parts pertaining thereto, then when the bar 21 is moved lengthwise and the lug 19 is within the recess 20, the plate 55 is rocked. If the movement of the bar 21 to be in a direction to unlock the door 2, then the plate 55 is rocked in a direction to lower the roller 57, thereby permitting the bar 36 to fall to an extent to drop the lug 35 in a notch 34 and lock the bar 36 to the master door-propelling bar 29, whereupon when the bar 29 is moved longitudinally the bar 36 participates in such movement and the door is actuated through the lazy tongs connections 38 to either the open or closed positions, as the case may be. The door is locked by moving the locking bar 21 in the so proper direction, resulting in an actuation of the plate 13 to an extent causing the plate 55 to rock so as to lift the 'bar 36 to elevate the lug 35 out of the notch 34, wherefore movements of-the bar 29 will then no longer cause the door 2 to travel with it. It results therefore that the door 2 must be unlocked before it can be either opened or closed and can be locked in either the open or closed position, making it then impossible to move 1009 the door in either direction even though the master door-propelling bar 29 be actuated.
To individualize the 'locking and operating mechanism of the doors, though common to all the doors, there is provided 1 mechanism for permitting a disconnection of any one or more of the doors from operative relation to the master locking and doorpropelling devices. For this purpose there is provided an angle or hell crank lever 621 having a pivotal support 63 on an appropriate portion of the casing 10. One arm of the lever has a pin 64 engaging in and movable along a slot 65 in the plate 13. The other arm of the lever is connected to a re- 1 spective one of a number of rods 66 extend ing through the casing 10 and ultimately into the box 23, Where it is connected to one end of a rock lever 67 supported on a bracket 68 carried by a plate 69, which in the par- 12o ticular showing of the drawings is an up right plate, the lever 67 also being upright, and having its connection with the rod 66 at the upper end of the lever. Pivoted to the lower end of the lever 67 is a slide member 70 with a notch 71 therein and provided with a manipulating head 72. The slide 70 extends through the plate 69. so that the notch 71 may engage the late and lock therewith when the lever 67 is rocked in 13 one direction to pull the rod 66 so asto raise the plate 13. On the rod 66 is a spring 73 bearing at one end against the lever 62 and at the other end against a stop bracket 74 and tending at all times to restore the.
It is customary to provide a door at the end of a corridor of cells, said door being indicated at 75 in Figs. 1 and 5. The door more, a latch bolt 80 is carried by the box 23 in the path of the rib 76 so that on the closure of the door the latch bolt 80 will snap in the path of the door and hold it against opening. The bolt 80 slides through a guide 81 in the box 23 to the interior thereof, and is there provided with a stem 82 engaging the spring 83 in a suitable casing 84 within the box 23, so that .the latch 80 after being moved out of the way by the closing door, will be returned in front of the flange 76, thus holding the door closed in addition to the holding efi'ect of the bolt box 23 is connected to the latch bolt 80 for its actuation after the bar 26 is opened.

Carried by the portion of the end of the corridor against which the door 75 closes is a housing 90 in which there is located a spring 91 supported at one end on a fixed part of the structure and at the other end carrying a pin 92 movable through the housing 90 into the path of the flange 76 and also into the path ofthe lock bolt 78. The pin 92 is yieldable to the closing movement of the door, but is movable into the pathof the lock bolt 78 when the door is open, so that the lock bolt 78 may not be progected so lOIlg as the pin 92 is in its pat When the corridor door 75 is opened and the lock bolt 78 is withdrawn, the pin 92 moves into the path of the lock bolt 78. Sometimes the corridor door does not close tightly and the latch 80 fails to catch it and the bolt 78 also fails to engage in the keeper 79, so that without anything to particularlyv indicate such conditions there may be a failure to properly close the door 75. With the structure of the invention such a condition is impossible, since the lock bolt 78 cannot be projected so long as the pin 92 is in its path and the pin 92 is not moved out of the path of the lock bolt unless the door be fully closed, since the door itself constitutes the means for moving the pin 92 out of the way. Furthermore, the door 26 of the box 23 cannot be closed, since the head 48 of, the rod 46 remains in the path of closure of the door 26 unless the extension 88 of the rod 46 has entered the passage 87 in the lock bolt 78, and this cannot occur unless the lock boltbe fully projected. Nor can the rod 46 be moved to its retracted position with its extension 88 in the passage 87 until the levers 24 and 25 be returned to their initial position, because such position 7 is needful in order-that the bar 41 be seated in the notch 42 and until its seating is performed the rod 46 cannot be pushed in to its full retracted position. must, therefore, be brought to the proper place withcell doors either locked open or "shut, as may be desired, and the corridor door fully closed and locked before the lever control box 23 can be closed and locked.
It is often desirable to obtain ready access to the box or casing 10 for inspection and re air, when necessary, of the 'mechanism t erein contained. A simple means for gaining admission to the box 10 is shown separately in Figs. 6, 7 and .8. An angle strip 93 extends along and is made fast to the bottom of the casing or cover box 10 and a cover 94 is provided for the box 16 with the cover upright when in position and All the parts naeaa ia closing in that face of the box toward the are arranged to extend through angle strips 99 on the ceiling of the corridor and bottom 95 of the cover box. Locking strips 100 with slots 101 therein are mounted to slide inside the cover box so that the slots may be traversed by the projecting webs of the brackets 98, which Webs have each a notch 102 in one side. The. strips 100 are so arranged that when the brackets 98 have their projecting portions extending through the slots 101, a longitudinal movement of the strips 100 will cause one end wall of each slot 101 to seat in a notch 102, thus locking the cover in place. One end 103 of each locking strip 100 is carried into the locking lever box 23 and is there perforated for the reception of one end of a double hook 104: which not only holds the strip 100 in the locked position, but maybe engaged by a lever 25 for the actuation of the locking strip,
What is claimed is 1. A locking system for. jail doors, com prising locking means for each door, operatmg means for the door-locking means c0mmon to all the doors, and means individual to the doors and operable from a common point for disconnecting the locking means of any door from the operating means therefor without affecting the locking means of the other doors, whereby any one of a number of doors may be unlocked or locked without efiect upon the locking means of the other doors, or any chosen number of doors up to the full number thereof may be unlocked or locked, at the will of an operator, from a common oint. 2. A locking system or jail doors, comprising locking means individual to the doors and embodying locking devices for locking closed position, operating means for the door-locking means common to all the doors, and means operable from a commonpoint and individual to each door for eliminating any one or. more of the doors from the common operating means for the locking means, with the eliminated doors remaining in either the open or the closed position and there locked.
3. In a locking system for jail doors, a series of doors, a longitudinally movable master lock-operating bar common to all the doors and having means for manipulating it, an n right look bar individual to each door and movable up and down with respect to the door, means associated with each ineach' door in either the open or dividual lock bar to lock the door in either the closed or the open position, a sub lock- ,operating bar, also individual to each door and connected to the upright lock bar of the door for moving it up and down, interlocking connections between the master lockoperatmg bar and the sub lock-operating bar, which connections are individual to the respective doors, and means individual to each door for connectin and disengaging the interlocking connections, to either include in or take out any door from operative gelation with said master lock-operating 4;. In a locking system for jail doors a series of doors, a longitudinally movable master lock-operating bar for the doors having means for manipulating it, an upright lock bar individual to each door and movable up and down with respect to the door, and said door having means for its individual lock bar to lock the door in either the closed or the open position, connecting means between the master lock-operating bar and the upright lock bar for the door for moving said lock bar up and down, said connecting means including a In and the master bar having a notch individual to the lug, and means individual to each door and separate from the master bar and said connecting means for moving the lug into the notch 'to permit the operation of the oor lock bar and for moving the lug out of the notch to disconnect the door lock bar from the master lock operating bar.
5. The combination with a jail cell having a door, locking means for said door consisting of a vertically disposed lock bar and a horizontally disposed keeper bar, the latter extending across the door and pro vided with notches at opposite ends, said keeper bar having its notches engaged by the lock bar when the door is either opened or closed, a bell crank lever to which the upper end of the lock bar is connected, a horizontallv disposed lock-operating bar, and means connecting the bell crank lever with the last-named lock-operating bar.
6. The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors, of an upright lock bar individual to each door, a bell crank lever connected to each lock bar, a sub lock-operating bar connected to each bell crank lever, a master lock-operating bar for the lock bars of the series of doors, and interlocking connections between the sub and master lock-operating bars.
7. The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors, of an upright lock bar individual to each door, a horizontal keeper bar for each door adapted to be engaged by the lock bar, a bell crank lever connected to the upper end of each lock bar, a sub lock-operating bar connected to (ill) rigidly connected to the sub lock-operating bar, a master lock-operating bar movable lengthwise of the series of cells and mounttions between the individual lock means and the master lock-operating bar, a casing wherein the moving means for the master lock-operating bar 1s contained, said casing having a door for closing it, and an impediment means located in said casing and having a normal tendency to project into the path of the casing door to prevent closing said door, said impediment means being provided with a device controlled by the master lock-operatin bar to prevent the retraction of the impe iment device into the casing and the closing of the casing door unless the master lock-operating bar is in the locking position.
9. In a locking system for jail doors, a series of doors, a longitudinally movable master lock-operating bar common to all the doors and having means for manipulating it, a lock bar individual to each door and movable up and down with respect to the door, said door having engaging means for its individual lock bar to lock the door in either the closed or the open position, a sub lock-operatin bar connected to the upright lock bar of t e door for moving it up and down, connections between the master lock operating bar and the sub lock-operating bars individual to the respective doors, and means for disconnecting the sub lock-operating bar of each door from the master lockoperating bar when the door is in the locked position and either open or closed.
10. A locking system for jail doors, comprising a master lock-operating bar of a length to include all the doors and common thereto and provided with manipulating means for actuating it, a lock bar individual to each door and movable up and down with relation thereto, means on each door for engagement by the individual lock bar to lock the door in either the closed or the open position, a sub lock-operating bar individual to each door and connected to the lock bar of the door, and means connected to the sub lock-operating bar for engagement with and disengagement from the master lock-operating bar, whereby the latter may be connected to the lock" means for the doors for moving them to the locked or unlocked positions, or may be disconnected therefrom for the operation'of chosen ones of the door locks without interference with others of the door locks. 1
11. The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors, of amaster propelling bar for the doors, a supplemental propelling bar for each door, means for connecting each supplemental propelling bar with its door, normally disconnected interlocking connections between the supple mental and master propelling bars, and means for connecting and disconnecting said interlocking connections.
12. In a locking and operating system for jail doors, the combination with locking means individual to each door, a master lock-operating bar for all the doors, individual connecting means between the individual door locking means and the master lock-operating bar, said connecting means being capable of disconnection from the master lock-operatingbar, a master propellin peling means for each door, individual means for connecting the individual propelling means with and disconnecting said means from the master propelling bar, and separate means individual to each door for disconnecting the master lock-operating bar bar for all the doors, individual pro-v from the individual locking means for each I door, and for disconnecting the master propelling bar from the individual propelling means for each door, whereby any one or more doors of the system may be locked or unlocked without affecting the other doors of the system. 7

The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors, locking means for each door consisting of a vertically disposed lock bar and a horizontally disposed keeper bar, the latter extending across the door and provided with notches at opposite ends, said keeper bar having its notches engaged by the lock bar when the door is either opened or closed, and means operable from a common point and individual to each door for eliminating any one or more of the doors from the common operating means for the locking means, with the eliminated doors remaining in either the opened or closed position and there locked,

The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors and individual locking devices for the doors, of a master lock-operating bar arranged longitudinally of the series of doors, individual connecting means between the master lock-operating bar and the individual locking devices for each door, said connecting means being normally connected with the master lockoperating bar, but capable of disconnection therefrom, a master propelling bar for all the doors, individual propelling means between the master propelling bar and each door, said means being normally disconrecaaaa nected from the master propelling bar but capable of connection therewith at will, and separate means individual to each door between the master lock-operating bar and the master propelling bar, and operated by the movement of the master lock-operating bar to connect the master propelling bar with the individual propelling connections for each door.
15. The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors and individual locking devices for the doors, of a master lock-operating bar arranged longitudinally of the series of doors, individual connecting means between the master lock-operating bar and the individual locking devices of each door, said connecting means being normally connected with the master lockoperating bar but capable of disconnection therefrom, amaster propelling bar for all the doors, individual propelling connections between the master propelling bar and each door, said propelling connections being normally disconnected from the master propelling bar but capable of connection therewith at will, separate means individual to each door between the master lock-operating bar and the master propelling bar, and operated by the movement of the master lock-operating bar to connect the master propelling bar with the individual propelling connections for each door, and means individual to each door for disconnecting the master lockoperating bar and the individual locking means of a chosendoor, and simultaneously disconnecting the master propelling bar and the individual propelling connections of the same door.

The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors and individual locking means for the doors, of a master lock-operating bar arranged longitudinally of the series of doors, individual connecting means between the master lock-operating bar and the individual locking devices for each door, said connecting means being normally connected with themaster lock-operating bar but capable of disconnection therefrom, a master propelling bar for all the doors, individual propelling means between the master propelling bar and each door, said series of jail doors, comprising a master,
lock-operating bar extending along the series of doors and provided with manipulating means, locking devices for each door, a master door-propelling bar along the series of doors and provided with manipulating means, other door-propelling means individual to each door, connections between the master door-propelling and the individual door-propelling means and under the con trol of the master lock-operating bar, the parts being timed in operation to first unlock the doors and then move the doors from the unlocked position to another position and there lock them, and means individual to each door for disconnecting it from the master lock-operating bar, and all extending to a common point of manipulation adjacent to the other-named mani ulating means, whereby each door may be disconnected from the master bars without adecting the i other doors, and any one or more of the doors may be unlocked, opened or closed and relocked without affecting any other door.
20. A locking and operating system for a series of jail doors, comprising a master lock-operating bar common to all the doors and movable with relation thereto, a lock bar individual to each door, with the door having means whereby its lock bar may look it in either the closed or the open position, operating means for each-individual lock bar .comprising a sub lock-operating bar, a rock lever connected to the sub lock-operating bar and to the lock bar individual to the door, a memberconnected to the sub lock-operating bar and provided with a lug, the master lock-operating bar having notches to receive the lugs on the said members of the several doors, a master propelling bar common to all the doors and provided with notches individual to the doors, a supplemental propelling bar for each door associated with the master propelling bar and provided with a lug to engage in the respective notch of the master propelling bar, means under the control of the master lock-operating bar for moving the supplemental propelling bar of a door to engage its lug into the respective notch of the propelling bar or remove it therefrom, and connections between the supplemental propelling bar and the respective door for movin the latter from the closed to the open position or vice versa.
21. A locking and operating system for a series of jail doors, comprising a master lock-operating bar common to all the doors and movable with relation thereto, a lock bar individual to each door, with the door having means whereby its lock bar may look it in either the closed or the open position, operating means for each individual lock bar comprising a sub lock-operating bar, a
rock lever connected to the sub lock-operating bar and to the lock bar individual to the door, a bar connected to the sub lock-operating bar and provided with a lug, the master lock-operating bar having notches to receive the lugs on the said bars of the several doors, a propelling bar common to all the doors and provided with notches individual to the doors, a supplemental propellingbar associated with the master propelling bar and individual to the respective doors, said supplemental propelling bar being provided with a lug to engage in a respective notch of the master propelling bar, means under the control of the master lock-operating bar for moving the supplemental propelling bar to engage the lug in a'respective notch of the master propelling bar or remove it there from, and connections between the supplemental propelling bar and the respective door formoving the latter from the closed to the open position or vice versa, each door racaaaa having means individual thereto for disconnecting the member fast to the sub lockoperating bar from the master lock-operating bar at will to leave the door locked in either the closed or the open position without interference with any other door.
22. In a locking and operating system for jail doors, means for unlockin and locking the doors, means for propellin the doors from the closed to the open position and vice versa, with said means provlded with manipulating means located at a common point, a casing for the manipulating means having a door for permitting access, and a closure impediment means for the door having means for preventing the closing of the door until all the operating parts have been brought into locked position.
23. In a locking and operating system for jail doors, means for unlocking and locking the doors, means for propelling the doors from the closed to the open position and vice versa, with said means provided with manipulating means located'at a common point, a casing for the manipulating means having a door for permitting access, and a closure impediment means for the door movable into impeding relation to the door on the opening of the latter, said impediment means having means for preventing the closing of the door until all the operating parts havebeen brought into locked position.
24. In a locking and operating system for jail doors, means for unlocking and locking the doors, means for propelling the doors from the closed to the open position and vice versa, with said means provided with manipulating means located at a common point, a casing for the manipulating means having a door for permitting access, and a closure impediment means for the door movable into impeding relation to the door on the opening of the latter, said impediment means having means for preventing the closing of the door until all the operating parts have been brought into locked position, comprising a spring actuated rod, and a lock member controlled thereby and engaging the lock-operating means, with the latter arranged to prevent the return of the spring actuated rod to normal position after being actuated by the spring unless the lock-operating means be in normal or inoperative position.
25. In a locking and o crating system for jail doors, means for locking and unlocking the doors, means for propelling the doors from the closed to the open position and vice versa, a corridor door associated with the other doors, a lock bolt, for the corridor door, manipulating means for the locking and propelling means ofthe doors located at a common point and provided with a closure having a door, and impediment means for the last-named door comprising eceaaa a spring actuated rod having connections with the lock-operating means for the firstnamed doors, and an extension to the lock bolt of the corridor door, with the latter having a receptacle for the extension, whereby the spring actuated rod cannot be returned to its initial position to permit shutting of the door of the closure until all parts are in their normal position.
26. In a locking and operating system for jail doors, a series of cell doors and a corridor door, means for unlocking and locking the cell doors, means for operating the cell doors from the closed to the open position and vice versa, with said means provided with a manipulating means located at a common point, means for locking the corridor door, a casing for the manipulating means having a door for permitting access, and a closure impediment means for the casing door moving into impeding relation thereto, said impediment means havino means for preventing the closure of said casing door until all the operating parts have been brought into locked position, and the corridor door has been brought into the closed, locked position.
27. The combination with a series of jail cells having individual doors, a corridor door, means for locking the cell doors, an operating means for the locking means of the cell doors, a casin in which said operating means is located and in which it is accessible for movement, said casing having a door, and an impediment means within the casing having a normal tendency to project into the path of the door to prevent the closing thereof, said impediment means having an extension for locking the corridor door when the impediment means is retracted within the casing, said means being held in the retracted position as long as the casing door is closed.
28. In a locking system for jail doors, a series of cell doors and a corridor door, means for unlocking and locking the cell doors and provided with manipulating means, means for locking the corridor door, a casing in which the manipulating means for the door locking means is located and which is provided with a door for permitting access thereto, and a closure impediment means for the casing door having means for engaging the cell door-locking means and the means for locking the corridor to maintain the cell doors and corridor door locked so long as the casing door is closed.
29. In a locking and operating system for jail cell doors, lock-operating and doorpropelling mechanism extending above a series of cell doors and having manipulating means at a common location, and a box or casing for the lock-operating and door-propelling mechanism provided with a cover having lock members, with the box also having co-acting lock members, said last-named lock members each comprising a slidable bar extending to the same location as the manipulating means for the lock-operating and cell door-propelling devices.
