ALBERT F. SCHROEDER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Rnmroncme DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, rate.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. SCHROEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at city of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reinforcing Devices, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention is associated with a reinforcing device or a metallic tie brace adapted to be embedded in concrete construction. More particularly, the invention relates to a member adapted to connect and hold a series of primary reinforcing rods in proper spaced relation, during the pouring of indurating material thereabout.
The object of my invention besides contriving a structural design, which will bescope of the claim hereunto appended.
Adverting to the drawing:
Figure I illustrates an elevation of a reinforcing device embodying my invention.
Fig. II is a bottom plan of Fi I.
Fig. III is a top plan of Fig. i
IV is a section on line IVIV of Fig. V illustrates a series ofmembers embodying my invention asused preparatory {)0 being embedded in a reinforced concrete eam.
The form which theidrawing illustrates for my invention is I-shaped and as such 1s adapted for use in the manufacture of concrete I-beams or trussed flooring, in whlch a plurality of parallelly extending rods are to be embedded.
The structure exemplified is a sheet metal stamping which commends itself to commercial use because it may be made from scrap material. substantially parallel end members 1 and 2, connected midway by a member, 3. The member 1, should be considered as that portion of the whole which will rest nearest the bottom of the beam and it will be seen to have intermediate strengthening ribs 4, and comparatively thin flat ends 5, each of which is fashioned with a cut-out portion having a mainly circular part 6, and a constricted part 7, opening through the upper edge. The inherent flexibility of the metal will permit of bending the hooked extremities 8, so as to allow the insertion of the primary reinforcing rods 9, after which the hook portions 8, may be returned to a position substantially within the plane of the ends 5, todthereby prevent the dislodgment of the ro s. I
The connecting web member 3, divaricat/es and connects with the member 1 in such a way as to inclose a large circular opening 10, through which the larger primary reinforcing rod 11, is to extend. The member 3, is stiffened by a ribbed formation throughout its extent.
The upper member 2, is similarly pro- In shape it comprises two I vided intermediately of its ends with ribbed portions 12, and 'with flat end portions 13 and likewise with cut-out portions 14:, all of such a shape as to provide hooks 15, capable of being bent laterally. In addition, the upper member 2, is provided atits middle with an upwardly, directed flat extension 16, and this latter is similarly provided with the same type of cut-out 17, to form a hook 18. Other rods 9 appear occupying the cutout portions 14:.
The special advantage which my invention has over devices heretofore used is due to the idea of slotting through the openingswhich are to accommodate the majority of the reinforcing rods, so that the entire rod may be simultaneously inserted in a row of openings instead of being separately inserted through each opening. In operation after the requisite number of devices like that which constitutes the subject matter of this application have been collected upon the rod 11, the other five smaller rods may be very quickly inserted into the alined openings 6, 14 and 17 respectively, and thereafter locked therein by bending the hooks 8, 15 and 18 back to the near closing position seen in Figs. I and V. It is to be understood that devices of this character may be supplied to tne'trade with the hooks 8, l5 and 18 already bent out of the plane of the opening as shown in Figs. 11 and III so that the assembly of the reinforcing structure in its entirety may be the more speedily efi'ected.
During the manufacture of I beams the stamping is suspended in the mold against the lower sides of the upper member 2, otherwise the Weight of the rods would depress it below its proper position. In order to minimize the portion of the stamping which will thus become flush with the under surface of the indurated material there, I bring such two lower sides to a point at 19, thereby concealing all of the stampin with the exception of such points as will e readily understood by those skilled in the art.
I claim:
A reinforcing device of the character described comprising a skeleton member having a plurality of ends thin, substantially flat and somewhat flexible, such ends being furthermore fashioned with cut-0E portions, having constricted communication through an edge of the member respectively,
whereby the flexing of the material bordering said constricted cut-out area enables the insertion of an object fitted to the remainder of the cut-out area, some of said ends being fashioned with points for the purpose specified.
Signed by me, this 25th day of January,
1917. ALBERT F. SCHROEDER.
