IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDS FOR BOOT AND SHOE SOLES.l

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,823, dated May 14, 1872.

Specification describing an Improvement in Shoe-Soles, and in apparatus for making the same, invented by WILLIAM J. B. MILLS, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Penn- Sylvania.

My invention'consists of a shoe-sole, having a bodyY shaped and condensed and a border han ged by molding, as fully described hereat ter, so as to be available Without the usual preliminary manipulation for immediate appli-4 cation to a last, and for being attached to the upper. My invention further consists of certain devices, too fully explained hereafter to need preliminary description, for molding and anging the sole.

In the drawing, Figure l is a plan view of the mold for forming the shoe-sole; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the line a a, Fig. l 5 and Figs. 3, 4, and 5, transverse sections of the mold and sole on the lines b b, c c, and d d.

A is the base and B the platen of the mold, the former being placed on the bed of any suitable press. The upper face of the base and under face ofthe platen are made to coincide with the desired shape of the sole. O is a guard, adapted to and entirely surrounding the base, and lof such internal shape and dimensions that the edge of the sole will accurately fit into it. D is the follower, having a lian ge of such shape and dimensions as to eX- actly t but slide freely in the guard G.

ln using` the above-described devices the platen B and follower' D are, in the first instance, Withdrawn, and the crude sole is placed grain side downward on the base A, the edge of the sole fitting snugly within the guard C. The platen B is now forced down upon the sole so as to impart the desired shape and density to the same, and the follower D is also depressed, the flange, during its descent, 'orcin g the projecting border of the sole downward into the space h, and thereby forming on the edge of the sole and entirely round the same, and at one operation, a lip or flange, which renders the sole available for being applied to a last and stitched to the upper. By this molding of the sole not only is the lower flange formed, but the body has the desired shape given to it by a pressure which imparts such density and stiffness to the leather that the usual rolling and hammering operations may be dispensed with.

I claiml. As anew article of manufacture and co1nmerce, a shoe-sole having a body shaped and condensed, and a border flanged by molding, as set forth.
