UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM T. `CfAIenArr, or sAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEM ENT IN LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,799, dated May 14, i872.
.To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. GARRA'IT, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Lubricator; andI dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in lubricators for the cylinders and other parts of steam-engines. The invention consists in having the oilspace inclosed in an outer jacket, having pipe-connections for maintaining live or exhaust steam in said outer jacket to keep the oil warm and iiuid; also, to make it possible to make use of suet for oiling, the heat from the steam rendering it as fast or faster than wanted.
Figure 1 is au elevation of myimproved oiler, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts'.
A is the oil-holding vessel; and B, the condenser, through which the steam passes to the oilcr, being admitted to the latter at the bottom to force the oil ont through the pipe-Connections G to the engine. Heretofbre these condensers have been arranged below the oilchamber, and, as the steam does not wholly condense at all times, some of it escapes into the oiler and nds its way to the top of the oil, thereby interfering with its discharge; but
if placed above the entrance to the oil-chamber it does not enter, as it cannot pass downward through the water. D is an outer jacket encircling the oil-holder A and a space, E, between it and the latter, with a pipe-connection, I", to admit live or exhaust steam to it for heating'vessel A; also, an escape-pipe, G,
by which a circulation is kept up. This is n1- tended to keep the oil hot and fluid in cold weather 3 also, to make the instrument available for using suet and the like substances for lubricating. H is a nozzle and cock for drawing the water off from the oiler when the oil is exhausted for filling again, at which time the cock I is closed.
The latter cock may be,`
used for regulating the pressure of `the steam on the oil. Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination and arrangement of the oil-chamber A and jacket D, forming an annular Steamchamber, and having supply and exhaust pipes, and constructed and operated as `herein set forth.
VILLIAM T. GARRATT.
