Description

E. L. LYON. Improvement in Bag-Holders.l
`NO` 126,723, Patented Maj/14,1872:
NrrED STATES ErHEL L. LYON, OE srEAMBUEG, NEW YORK.
IMPRQVEMENTIN BAG-HOLDERS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,723, dated May 14, 1872.
Specication describing anew and Improved Bag-Holder, invented by ETHEL L. LYON, of Steamburg, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York. My invention consistsof a set of hooks or holding-points on bars arranged on a table in such manner that the points may be readily brought together over the center of the filled bag to fold the top for tying, and when detached from the filled bag they will be swung back to the positions for holding the empty bag open by a weight and spring, or other equivalent device. The invention also consists of a treadle below the table, adapted for supporting long or short bags, toV take the strain off the hooks; also, to raise the bag for detaching it from the hooks, all as hereinafter described. Y
Figure l is a plan view of my improved bag-holder, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line x a: of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
A represents a table or frametop of any` kind, with an opening, B, at one end or side largeenough to suspend theopen bag in. f G represents two ho`oks or points mounted on the ends of the bell-cranks D,..at the edge of the table, one on each side of the notch B. Said bell-cranks are pivoted to the table at their elbows by the sides of the notch B, and about half .Way-to the inner end of it. E represents two other hooks or points, supported at the inner corners of the notch on plates or bars F, pivoted at G to the table at the center of the inner end of the notch. The plate and bell-crank of each side are connected by a bar, H, so that one will be moved by the other, and to each bar H a cord, I, and weight K` are attached, to swing the hooks back to the positions represented' in Fig. l when a filled bag has been removed. L is a tilting bag-supporting board, pivoted on the lower cross-bar'of the frame, and having a leg, N, hinged to the under side of the end whereon the bag rests, to support it high enough for short bags, or to be displaced to let the end of said support L down for long bags. For displacing said leg a cord, O, connects it with a leverP, ,arranged on the under side of the outer end of support L, with one end projecting, as shown in Fig. I, to be pushed forward or back by the foot of the operator.
The bag being suspended on the hooks, when in the positions represented in Fig. 1, will be held open until iilled; then the outer `ends of the bell-cranks being swung intoward the center of the opening B, the hooks E will also be forced in to meet the others by the action of the bars H; then the bag may be tied and then detached from the hooks by lifting it on the support L, the outer end of which will be forced down for the purpose, elevating the inner end so that the bag may be easily delivered onto the iioor at the feet of the operator.
By preference the apparatus will be mount-- ed on a portable frame. or support of any kind which may be moved about a building readily.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. rEhe combination of a series of bag-holding hooks or points with movable supports, arranged substantially as specified, so that the points, with the top of the bag connected to them, can be swung together, or nearly so, over the top of the filled bag.
2. The said movable supports, connected together in pairs, and a weight and cord coinbined with each pair, substantially as specified, so that said hooks will be automatically returned to the positions for receiving an empty bag when the filled bag is disconnected from said hooks.
\ 3. The said hooks and their :movable supports, combined with a table or support having an opening in the side for the adjustment of the bag, substantially as specified.
4c. The combination, with said adjustable bag-hooks, their movable supports, and the L supporting-frame therefor, of the oscillating bag-rest L, substantially as specified.
5. The said oscillating bag-support, having a leg, N, jointed to it, and said leg having the tripping-cord O and lever P, all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
ETHEL L. LYON.
Witnesses Guns. B. STURDEYANT, W. B. WELLS.
