income.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN GAUTHIER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Mattoon, in the county of Shawano and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stone-Pullers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this speclficatlon.
The invention relates to stone pullers.
The invention is designed to provide a device which will readily loosen a stone from its "bed, lift the stone up on its own carriage so that it may be easily carrled away and s especially useful in clearing land for agrlcultural purposes. 1
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the con: clusion hereof.
v In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the device embodying the invention in full lines showing it in position for removing a stone and in dotted lines showing the stone removed and ready to be carried away;
Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the dev ce;
Fig. 3 is a detail View of a modified form of one of the parts of the device, parts being broken away.
In general the device comprises a carriage 4 and a stone clamping mechanism carried thereby and cooperating therewith to lift the stone from its bed and carry 1t away.
The carriage consists of a sled having runners 5, metal frame members 6 secured to the runners, transverse frame members 7 secured to the members 6 and to the runners, braces 8 secured to the members 7, stone lifting members 9 secured to the members 7 and joined together at their front ends, and a draw bar 10 secured to the members 9.
The stone clamping mechanism consists of the members 9 and a clamping and lifting member 11 pivotally secured at a distance from the carriage to upwardly extending supports 12 and 13.
The members 9 have upwardly curved ends 14 and intermediate curved portions 15 forming with the carriage a basket for receiving the rock. 7
The member 11 is pivotally secured at one end 16 to the supports 12 and 13 and is arcuate-shaped to form an inwardly curved pointed end 17 which is 'providedwith teeth Specification of Jietters Patent.
18. The member 11 is also provided with a pro ect1on 19 near the end 17 so that the end 17 may be driven into the ground beside'the' rock by a sledge or other suitable means.
After the rock has been lifted from the soil it is secured to the sled by achain 20 which is detachablysecured at its ends to eyebolts 21 on the runners 5.
In Fig. 3 a portion of a modified form of clamping member 11 has been shown in which the lower end 17 is bifurcated.
it-h this construction when it is desired to remove a rock the device is placed'upright besidethe rock so that theends 14: of the members 9 are embedded in the soiland rest against the rock and so that the ends of the runners are upright and rest upon the groimd or are partially embedded in the soil. The clampingwmember 11 is then swung down over the rock and its end 17 or 17 driven on. the opposite side from the' members 9. The device is now ready for pulling the rock which is accomplished by applying power to the draw bar 10, a team of horses or other suitable source of power being connected up to said bar to pull the sled overupon the ground. In pulling the sled, the ends of the runners act as a fulcrum, the members 9 act as a pry and the member 11 serves to lift and hold the rock to the carriage as it is being pulled up and tipped over onto the carriage. When pulled over, the device assumes the dotted line position of Fig. 1, the chain 20 is brought over the rock to secure it upon the sled and the team draws the sled away to the place where the rock is to be disposed of.
The invention thus exemplifies a simple and efiicient device for extracting and car rying away stones from farm land.
I claim:
1. In a stone puller, the combination of a carriage, a lifting member fixedly carried thereby and provided with outwardly projecting spaced apart ends for engaging the rock, a clamping and lifting member pivotally secured to the forward portion of the carriage and cooperating with said lifting member to lift the rock from its bed onto the body of the carriage, and means at the forward end of the carriage for applying power thereto.
2. In a stone puller, the combination of a sled, lifting members mounted on said sled and having outwardly extending endspro Patented May 21, mm. Application filed August 29, 1917. Serial No. 188,753.
into the ground beside the rock portion of the tending upwardly from the' forward portion of the sledj aclamping and'lifting member pivotally secured to said supports at-a" distanee -from the? sled and' cooperating with said"lifting 1nembers-on=thesled, and a draw bar at the forward end of'the' sled for'ap,
- plying powerthereto.
4a Ina stone puller, the combination 'of'a sled, liftingmembers fixedly'mounted there'- on" and having outwardly extending ends projecting from the rear end of the sled, a curved: clamping and liftinglmember' pivotally secured to the forward portion of the sled and cooperating with said lifting members to lift: the rock on the sled; said clamping andliftiirig member havinga toothed end, and means at, the forward end v of the sled for applying power'thereto':
5. In a stone puller; the combination of a carriage including runners, lifting: members mounted on the carriage and having outwardly extending-ends projecting fi-on'rthe rear end thereof, supports extending up a clamping and lifting \vardl from the carriage, a curved clamping and lifting member pivotally secured to said supports at their upper portions and cooperating with said lifting members on the carriage, said clamping and lifting member having a toothed end and a projection for facilitating driving into the soil, and ad'raw bar at the forward end of the sled for applying power thereto.
6. In a stone puller, the combination of a sled provided with runners having pointed rear ends to embed in the ground, spaced apart lifting members carried by the sled and having-their rear'ends projecting outwardly from the rear ends of the runners to engage the rock and a clamping and lift ing member pivotally securedto the sled and cooperating with said lifting'members to lift the rock from itsbed when said'slcd is moved from upright to horizontal positioni 7 i In a stone puller, the combination of a EDWIN GAUTHIER;
