Be it known tha. I, Bnnrnann ANDRE NA- VARRE, residing at Lyon, France, have invented new and useful Improved Apparatus for Regenerating Old Paper, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a process of and apparatus for the regeneration of old paper by converting it into a pulp which can be utilized in the same way as virgin pulp.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which shows in vertical cross-section that part of-the apparatus in which the first operation of the process is carried out.
The process consists in first triturating old paper in a water bath, and then in washing the pulp obtained, in order to remove therefrom printing ink or manuscript writing ink.
In the processes used at present for regenerating old paper, the tearing to pieces in a semidry state, to which the material is I subjected, results in the'ink being diffused throughout the mass and caused by pressure, to adhere to the fibers in such a manner that subsequent washing is powerless to remove it.
The invention is based in, principle on the observation suggested by experiments, that it old printed or written paperis triturated in a water bath, subsequent washing carried out under the conditions hereinafter described, removes from the pulp any traces of printing orwriting ink.
In view of the foregoing, and-in order to bring about the trituration of the paper, it is introduced into a vat 1 containing water, preferably hot, in a suitable quantity. At the bottom of the said vat are arranged agitators or stirrers such as 2 and 3 mounted with their axes either horizontal or vertical.

A pump 5 (preferably centrifugal), which however can be an elevator of any desired type, takes the pulp from the bottom of the vat (as soon as the paper is suiiiciently broken up) and discharges it upward, so as to return it again into the cycle, the dis charge pipe 61 opens into a bucket i in which rotates a cylinder 8 provided with longitudinal grooves. The pulp is forced to pass be tween the cylinder and the grooved bottom surface of the bucket 7, and is thus rolled and crushed during its passage.
The pulp thus obtained is necessarily gray owing to the diffusion in the mass or print ing or ,writing ink. Up to the present the known means for destroying the adhesion of ink to the fibers, consisted in treating the defibered paper by any desired detergent, for instance soap. The washing operation hereinafter described, does away with the use of any chemical means. This washing operation consists substantially in causing the triturated pulp to fiow ina liquid state over a wire screen arranged at a convenient angle to the horizontal. In flowing over the screen, the water passes through the meshes, while the fibers adhere to the screen. A fresh supply '01" water is then poured on the pulp which, being thus again diluted, moves down the slope of thescreen. W hen this fresh waterhas passed through the screen, another supply of water is poured on which again causes the pulp to advance down the screen and so on. These successive washings on an inclined plane result in the pulp arrivingat the lower end of the screen completely free from ink.
- Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, as connnunicated-to me by my for sign-correspondents, I declare that what I claim is:
