Application filed July 14, 1917. Serial No. 180,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, LEE, QRA CoBLER and JOSEPH E, DEANDREA, citizens of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shank-Stifieners and Heel-Plates for Shoes, of which the Iollowing is a specification. i g
Our invention has relation to an improvement in shank stiffeners andheel securing plates for shoes and in such connection it relates more particularly to the arrangement and constructionof such a device.
In womens shoes particularly those having high heels of what is known as the Louis XVth style the ordinary shank of the sole when made of leather, compressed paper or steel is inadequate to preventbuckling and loosening of the heel. under the shank and the consequent breaking of the heel breasting at the point. To satisfactorily/repair shoes so broken has heretofore been impossible.
It is the main object of our invention to provide a shank stiffener and heel securing plate for use in the manufacture of shoes or in repair work such as in the mending of the broken shank or in the repairing of the heel breasting or in the securing of a loosened heel to the shoe. To carryout our invention we provide a metallic plate having a tongue portion fitting on and secured to the sole of the shoe inside of said shoe, at the instep and a heel portion fitting over and fastened to the top of the heel'and also inside the shoe.
In addition to this plate We provide a horseshoe like strip of metal to be interposed between the heel portion of the plate and the heel to securely lock the heel against rotary movement or grinning while the shoe 1s in use. The plate with its tongue and heel portion may be said to be a combinedshank; stiffener and heel attaching device, wherethe sole 3. The heel portion 6 of the plate is likewise provided with openings 9 through ofthe shoe, the heel having heretofore n Specification of Letters Patent.

nailed or glued or otherwise fastened to this heel portion of the outer sole. The strip, is formed of relatively thin and preferably rounded metal so as to be capable of shaping in its adaptation for use with heels of varying size- The nature and scope of ourv invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection,
with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof in which-,- v I Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section of a shoe having a shank stiffening and heel attaching plate embodying the main features of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plate Fig. 3- is a perspective view of the circlet.- Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a shoe having a heel 2 and sole 3. Between.
the inner lining 4 of the shoe and the shank is inserted the tongue 5 of the device and between said lining l and heel 2 the heel plate 6 of the device is inserted. the heel portion 6 of the device andv said heel 2 is placed the metallic strip 7 bent,"
into substantially horeshoe shape and in outline corresponding to but slightly smaller than theoutline of the top of heel 2. In
our construction the strip 7 occupies the position usually occupied by the heel portion of the outer sole in the old construction of shoe. equivalent for said continuation of the shank and as such forms with the plate 6 the sole means for securing the heel to the shoe. Our construction thus does away with a direct connection between the heel and the sole and avoids the use of glue, brads or other fastening means to hold the heel to the shank. y
The tongue portion 5 of the stiflening and heel securing late is provided with holes 8 through which nails, brads or screws 8 may be inserted to secure the tongue 5 to an opening 10 for the insertion of a brad or nail 10 which serves to prevent the slipping ofthe metallicstrip 7 when once se- It serves therefore as the Between rot Y ing f the bee cured .down upon the heel 2 by the fast-enportion 6 to said heel. he device serves by means of its tongue portion 5 to stiffen the sole 3 and to prevent breaking off of the heel and sole at the breast 11 of the heel. Again the heel plate 6 with the strip 7 securely lock the heel 2 to the shoe and prevent the twisting off or loosening of the heel from the shank of the shoe. The metallic strip 7 prevents grinning at'the heel when the shoe is in use and since the strip is relatively flexible and separate from the plate it may be bent to the shape required for varying size heels.
Having thus described the nature and objects of our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe having a sole terminating at the breast of the heel of the shoe, a metallic plate secured inside of theshoe and extending over the sole and heel of the shoe, a metallic strip interposed directly between the plate and the heel of the shoe and means for securing the plate and strip. respectively to the sole and heel of the shoe.
In testimony whereof have signed our names to this specification.
L. ORA COBLERQ JOSEPH E. DEANDREA.
