UMBRELLA-COVER ATTACHMENT.
Specifieationof Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 2.3 11918.
Application filed February 9, 1918. Serial No. 216,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE C. HOUT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella-Cover Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to reduce the cost of securing an umbrella cover to the umbrella frame; to strengthen the umbrellaconstruction; and to cheapen thecost of umbrellas. 7
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a detail view showing in perspective an end fragment of an umbrella rib and cover therefor;
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the under side of an end fragment of an umbrella rib with a cover attaching clip constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on an enlarged scale, the section being taken as on the line 33 in Fig. 1;
Description.
As seen in the drawings, the cover fabric sections 10 are united to form a seam 11. Each seam 11 is superposed in line with one of the umbrella ribs 12. The ribs 12 are U-shaped in cross section, the extremity of each rib being contracted to form a tip. 13.
In forming the tips 13, the edges 14 of the rib at this point are drawn together. To finish each tip and to rigidly hold the anchor pin 15, each pin 15 is twisted on itself to form the brace 16 which is shaped to'con form withthe rib 12 and in serv1ce rests behind to engage the overturned sideedges 1? of the clips 18 which secure the cover sections 10. Each pin 15 is turned upon itself to provide eyeleted extensions 19, which in service are substituted for the knobs with which umbrella ribs are usually furnished.
The clips 18 are employed to hold the cover sections 10 and the umbrella cover on the umbrella ribs and at the ends thereof. To this end, the umbrella sections 10 unite to form end extensions. 1
The extension 20 is passed under the body of the clip 18 and so held when the clip is placed on the rib 12, said extension resting between the rib 12 and the clip 18. The
body of the clip 18 is shaped to hugthe rib 12 closely and is pressed against the same while the side edges 17 are overturned on the side edges of the ribs 12. Proper care is taken to bind the clip closely to the rib and the extensions 20 will then be found to be firmly secured to the frame structure.
Prior to contracting the edges 1 1, the pin 15 is placed in position with the brace 16 pressing upon the inner edge of the clip 18,
to exert, if necessary, a strain thereon to draw the coversections 10 on the umbrella frame. The tip 13 is then formed so that the outer extremity bears against the inner side of the extension 19, and thus anchors each pin 1.5 in the umbrella frame construction and maintains in service the operative position of the clips 18. The clips 21 are designed to hold the cover sections 10 at points intermediate the ends of the seam 11.
To this end, the clips 21 have a full body section 22 shaped in correspondence with the channels of the ribs 12. Side portions 23 are provided on the clips 21 to infold the ribs 12 at the outer sides thereof. The free edges of the side portions 23 are serrated to form toothed portions 24. The toothed portions 24 are drawn toward each other to impinge upon the margins 25 of the seams 11. This construction is best shown in Fig.
6 of the drawings. lln the final adjustment of the clips 21, the portions 24 are pressed toward each other and upon the ribs 12 and the seamanargins 25 interposed therebetween.
Olaims.
1. The combination of a plurality of U- shaped umbrella ribs; a fabric umbrella cover for said ribs; a plurality of clips for clamping said cover on said ribs, each of said clips being arranged to infold one of said ribs, the edges of said clips extending into the hollow of said ribs; and means for holding said clips in adjusted position on said ribs, said means embodying anchoring clampingsaid cover on said ribs, each 01"- said, clips being arranged to infold oneo'r' said ribs, the edges of said clips extending into the hollowof saidribs; means for holding said clips-in adjusted position on said ribs, said means embodying anchoring pins operatively engaging said clips and the ends of saidzribs for maintaining a fixed relation thereto; and means for holding said pins fixed-in theends of said ribs, said means embodying tip extensions for said ribs, said extensions being formed by pressing the metal of said ribs between said clips and the ends ofsaid pins.
3. The combination of a plurality of U- shaped umbrella ribs; a fabric umbrella cover for said ribs; a plurality of clips for clamping said cover on said ribs, each of said clips being arr-ringed to iniold one of said ribs, the edges of said clips extending into the hollow of said ribs; and means for holding said clips in adjusted position on said ribs, said means embodying anchoring pins operatively engaging said clips and the ends of said ribs for maintaining a fixed relation thereto, said pins having each an enlarged end exposed in service, and a brace for engaging a clip at the inner side thereof.
l. The combination of an umbrella frame having U-shaped ribs; a cover fabric having a plurality of cover sections, said sections being connected to form a seam for merlying each of said ribs, said seams haying seam margins; a plurality of metal clips each having a body portion shaped in correspondence with said ribs, and outer folding sections for surrounding said ribs, said folding sections haying serrated tooth-like edges for engaging said margins TllOl' retaining the same in service.
