Be it known that I. HA RY L. WHISIN- NAM), a citizen of the'United States, residing at Hermes, in the county of Kit Carson and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention comprehends the provision of a pen and pencil holder by means of which a number of such articles may be conveniently carried on the person with the least possibility of loss of the same, the in vention providing a unique and novel construction of a device of this character.

In carrying out the invention I aim to provide a device of the above mentioned characterwherein a plurality of pencils or pens of different sizes can be conveniently accommodated and properly supported.

Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel construe. tion of means whereby the device may be securely attached to the clothes of the user."

Thenature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the fol: lowing detail description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed in. accordance with my invention.

The device constructed in accordance with my invention preferably embodies an elongated plate or member 10 which may be con structed from any suitable material, preferably metal, the plate being provided with spaced pairs of transversely disposed slots, each pair of slots being indicated at 11. tape being preferably threaded in the manner illustrated so as to provide separate or independent article receiving loops 13 at one side of the plate. It might here be stated that the number of article receiving loops largely depends upon the size of the plate 10, and this may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. It will be noted that the pairs of slots 11 are not equidistantly spaced and by reason of this fact the article receiving loops 13 vary in size whereby pencils or pens of different slzes can be readily and conveniently accommodated, and yet properly supported without the possibility of losing the same. The portions of the tape defining the loops normally lie flat against one side of the plate, but it will be readily understood that through the elasticity of the material, the

various portions of the tape can be readily extended toreceive a pen or pencil therebetween and the plate 10, and when so extended is tensioned to effectively hold the article in pos1t1on. 1

While any suitable means may be employed for securing the plate 10 to the clothing of the user, 1 preferably make use of substantially Z-shaped fastening elements as shown. The plate 10 is slit transversely from its upper edge adjacent each end of the plate, as at 1 1, and a portion of the material is curved rearwardly to provide a sleeve 15. for the reception of the vertical portion 16 of thefastening element. Each fastening element is thus pivotally mounted upon the plate, while the short extremity 17 of said element is pointed to permit the same to be readily passed through the clothing of the user. When attaching the plate to the clothing the fastening elements are adjusted so that the short extremity 17 will project rearwardly from the plate at right angles thereto, in which position the said extremities may be readily passed through the clothing. The fastening elements are then swung to position the extremity 17 in parallelism with the plate 10, and the longer extremities 18 extending toward each other. The longer extremities 18 move across the upper edge of the plate and are offset as at 19, the offset portions 19 being received in suitable openings 20 whereby the fastening elements are locked in active position, and thereby practically eliminate all possibility of loss of the device.

While it is'beli eved that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that what is herein shown and described is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, and is in no way considered to be restricti'veyas various changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
