lItw- The. 'mode-of use of this invention will be readil seen in referenoe to Figs. 1 and 4. il further be seen that to raise and transport a lar e rock, shown at 33, the dipper is move backward by the dipper an e so as 'to cause the lower portion of the front of the dipper to engage the lower surface of the rock and the side of the rock 1s engaged by the side walls of the dipper, and then the supporter is allowed to swing on its hinges until it engages the side of the rock opposite to that engaged by the dipper, and is retained in that position by means of the pawls engaging thel racks. The rock is nowv raised and transported, to the place d'- sired, as, :tor instance, to the top of a fiatear, and then the rock is first deposited upon the surface of the car, so as to withdraw the greater portion of its weight from the sup# orter, and then the pawls are withdrawn rom the racks by the regular trip line and the supporter allowed to swing open and the whole of the rock is deposited upon the car,
.'free from the dipper.
' dipper, and means located on the side of the dipper and adapted' to engage said exsaid supporter remote from the dipper for preventing the supporter swinging away romthe dipper.
2. A dipper comprising sides, a back, a front having a downward extension below said sides and bach, a snpporter hinged to messen tension at a point sufficiently below the dipper to leave an opening therebetween to carry a rock too large to be contained in the' dipper, and a removable support section at thehback of said support and carried therew1t 3. In a di per, the combination of a dipper body an a supporter pivoted thereto by hinges of such size and form that said supporter cannot close the bottom of said dipper, and means located on the side of said supporter remote from the dipper for preventing the supporter swinging away from the dipper. 4. In a steam shovel dipper comprising a body closed at the front, back and sides and open at the top and bottom and a supporter hinged t0 the body behind the back, the front of the body extending below the sides and having means for engaging the supporter at a distance below the sides greater than the depth of the dipper body.
5. In a steam shovel dipper comprising a body closed at the front, back and sides und open at the top and bottom and a sup orter hinged to the body behind the bac t, the front of the body extending below the sides and having means for engaging the supporter at a distance below the sides greater than the depth of the dipper body and a removable Wearing plate secured to the lower edge of the front of the dipper.
6. A steam shovel dipper comprising a body closed at the front, back and sides and open at the top and bottom, and a sup orter hinged to said body behind the bac the front of the body extending below the sides and having means for engaging the sup-I porter at a distance below the sides greater 'than the depth of the dipper body, the back of the ,body having a bearing for pivoting the bail of the dipper.
