Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr, 116, 1218.,
To all whom it' may concern.'
Be it known that l2, ARCHE E. Pennini., a citizen of the United States, residing. at `Chicago, in the county of Coole and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful liniprovements in Talking- Machine Mecha- A nism, ot' which the following is a full, clear,
concise,1and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming e part of vthis specification.
My invention relates totalking'inachine mechanism. l
One of the objects of my invention is tol provide an improved connection between the tone erm and amplifier which will be simple in constructionand durable, and which will permit movement of the tone. arm about both vertical-and horizontal axes.
lin the drawings in which one embodiment of my invention is shown Figure 1 is e vertical section through a talking machine;
2 is e detail sectional 'view substan- 'ially on the line 2-2 oi' Fig. 3;
Fig. is e detail sectional view substantially on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 2; end
Fig. d is a. horizontal sectional view onthe line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring vto the' drawings in detail my invention is shown inconnection with a talking machine comprising a casing 10, driving mechanism 11, housed in the cursing, a record support 12 driven from the mechanism 11, a tone erm 13, e sound'box 14 supported b vlv the tone erm, and an amplifier 15 located inv the casing and in communication with the tone arm.
The casing, driving mechanism, record support andl amplifier may be of my usuel or suitable construction, and are not i de-y scribed in detail.
.ln this application I have shown e con struction of sound box claimed in my co! pending' application, Serial No. 120,82()` tiled Sept. 18, 1916, which can be used with either the hill and dale groove type of record or the laterally undulating groove type of recf ord which structure necessitates u, tilting of the tone erm about e, horizontal axis as well us e swinging about a vertical exis. ln this construction the sound box has e tubular `portion 16, rotatably mounted in the .down-turned tubular portion 17 o' the tono erm so that the sound box con be turned to move tl needle jlrom the 1 vters Patent is;-
groove, to a position in which the needle lies `directly beneath the axis of the tone arm,
'for use `with a hill and dele type of record'.
In order to keep the radius of movement oi theneedle approximately the same for both positions the tone arm is mede in two telescoping sections 18 and 19, 'and a link 20 .is pivoted at one end 21 to the sound boit adjacent the needle arm and its other end is pivoted to the section 18 at 22. The free end of the tone arm has to be raised somewhat' higher than shown in Fig; 1 when ,the sound `box is turned for use with the hill and dele groove record. To provide for this vlifting of the tono arm it is made so that it can'swinggl about a horizontal axis us well as about e vertical axis. For this purpose a tubular sleeve 23 connecting the tone erm and ampliier has :t bearing` 2st centrally supported-therein by means of armsV and e vertical shni't 26 mounted in the bearing 211 has secured` at its upper end a horizontal pin. or shaft 27 on which the tone arm is mounted to swing. The shaft 26 nus e, conical portion 28l for engagement with u coni` cal portion of the Abearing 2lto support the weight of the tone a'rm. For yieldingly holding the shaft 2G in place e nut 29is threaded on the lower end of the shaft, und n spring 30 is-'located between the nuty land bearing 2-1. To provide adjustable bearings :tor the horizontal vpin 27 pivot bearingsl are threaded into openings in the oppositie sides of the tone arm. The lower end of the tone arm may be rounded where it tits in the sleeve 23 to'meke a goed joint end allow movement ott' the erm. Y
The sleeve 23 is provided with u flange whichrests on top of the casing.
In use the movement of the tone nrmebout n verticul'axils on the shaft4 26 permits the movement of the tone arm necessary for i'ollowing the groove in the record, und the movement of the tone arm about a horizontal `exis on the pin 27 permits the free end of the tone arm to be raised or lowered for the diii'er'ent types of record.
Having thus described my invention what lcleim es new and desire to secure by' Let- 1. A talking =`@chine compris cal shaft provided with s como conical bearing therefor, o spring member' act-ing; on the bottom. ci: leerling hold therewith, a conical bearing lsupported centrally of said member, va vertical shaft pro vided with a conical face in said bearing., a spring. member acting on the bottom of said 'bea-ring to hold said shaft in bearing position, a horizontal shaft supported on said rst shaft, and a tone erin mounted to swing about said horizontal shaft as an axis.
3. A talking machine comprising a vertical shaft provided with a conical face, a conical bearing therefor, a spring member acting on the bottom of said loearingv to hold said shat in bearing position, a'horizontal shaft supported on said .rst shaft, and a noname bearing therefor, a horizontal. shaft sup-v ported on said first shaft, a spring inemben actlng on the bottom of said bearing to hold said shaft in bearing position, and a tone arm mounted to swing about said horizontal shaft as an axis, said tone arm having oj; iposed openings in. its sides and bearings threaded in said openings for said horizonuv tal shai'.
In witness whereof, l have hereunto euloscribed my name.
