UNION-SUIT WITH ABDOMINJAL BAND.
Application filed February 4, 1914.
useful Union-Suit withv Abdominal Band,y
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to undergarments, and especially to that class of undergarments known as union suits, for adults or children of either seX, and has for its chief object to provide a union suit which shall have greater thickness in that part of the garment which covers the abdominal region. This greater thickness may extend all around the suit or if preferred may be a shaped member and applied to one part only of the abdominal region, say at the front, or at the back, for example.
In two piece suits of undergarments of the usual kind, the abdomen is covered not only by the bottom of the shirt but by the upper part of the drawers. As a consequence, when one chnges from two piece underwear to a union suit, the abdomen is left without its accustomed double thick protection and there is a possibility of the Y wearer taking cold. This is especially true of certain individuals who seem to be peculiarly sensitive in the abdominal region. In my improved nnion suit herein disclosed, l provide, as above stated, a band of material attached to the garment in that portion which covers the abdominal region and completely or partially encircling the same. If preferred, instead of a band as shown herein, the eXtra thickness may be arranged either on the front or back, or both, and cut so as to conform to the shape of the body at the point applied.
My invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawing in which Figures 1 and 2 represent, respectively, partial front and back views of a form of union suit constituting the subject matter of my prior application Number 747,857, filed February 12, 1913, and in which l have embodied my present invention embodied therein; and Fig. 3 represents a similar, partial, front view of the same garment, opened up so as to better disclose the construction thereof.
In the drawings, A represents the front and B the back of the garment, which opens in front along the line D, being provided with buttons and buttonholeS in the usual Specification of Letters Patent.

manner., The front opening extends around the crotch and np the back toa point F about midway thereof, gussets Gr beingsewed at theirftop along the line F and at their inner edge to the two rear edges E. These gussets are'relatively'narrow at the'top and widen continuously to the bottom where they are sewed along the line H to the triangular gussets one edge of each of which is sewed to the front edge of the leg at the line J while the third edge K forms a continuation of the line D which constitutes the split at the front of the garment.
ln this way the combined gusset structures G and l form garment sections which, when the garment is closed, overlap one another so as to completely cover the opening at the V back and in and around the crotch.
The button L is provided at the edge J of the left-hand gusset I, and another button M at the inner apex of the same gusset, and buttonholes on the outer edge o-f the righthand portion of the garment are suitably located to engage these buttons.
The particular description of undergarment as above embodies no'part of my present invention but forms the subject matter of my prior application already referred to.
Arranged on the inner side-of the garment so as to completely encircle the same is the abdominal band O of preferably uniform width; this may be of the same material as the garment itself or of any preferred material and, of course, of any desired thickness. The under upper edge of this band is stitched to the garment, preferably along the line F, while the ends of the band are stitched to the edges D of the garment on each side of the front opening. Vertical stitches P and Q, corresponding to the two sides of the garment when n situ, are also provided. I have also shown stitches R and S running diagonally toward the crotch. If the portion of the band, just outside these diagonal stitches, be cut away at front or back, or both, I have what may be called abdominal pads. The lower edge of the band is, preferably, not stitched fast to the garment but is left free so that in adjusting the garment upon the person the band may be smoothed down under the gussets so as to constitute an additional protection in case said gussets tend to vgap oi" open.
While I havey shown my abdominal band applied to a particular type of union suit, I do not wish to limit my invention thereto as it may be applied to union suits 0f any and all kinds With the same beneficial results. Instead of sewing in an eXtra band or pads I may, of course, Weave that portion of the abdominal region of the garment for Which it is desired to provide the band or pad, of eXtra thickness as the garment is manufactured.
Nor do I Wish to limit myself in any Way to any particular'method of fastening the abdominal band to the garment as various Ways may suggest themselves in diiferent structures and may have equal utility.
Having described my invention l claim:
In a union suit an eXtra continuous fabric in the abdominal region thereof said fabric being stitched to the garment at its upper edge and by diagonal stitches corresp0nding to the contour of the body.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
