ATTORNEY JOHN HAWK, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed September 10, 1817. Serial No. 190,569.
To all whom it may concern:
lie. it known that 'I', .lonx HAWK. a citi zen of the l'nited States, residing at Binghaniton, in the county of Broome and State of New York. have invented a new and useful Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a clamp. and has for its primary object to provide an article of this character, which is particularly adaptahle for securing and holding two or more pieces of work in corre t relation in a substantial manner for gluing or other purposes. without possibility of the work or clamp lieconiing deranged.
Another ohject of the invention is the pl'tr vision of a clamp of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form. to render it efleetire in operation. easy to manipnlate, quickly del achahle, st rung, durable, and inexpensive in nninut'aeture.
The invention further has for its object to improve devices of the indicated character, in varying particulars, to the end that ellieiencj' in operation may he promoted. as well as simplicity in construction. and eon venience. of adju tm nt and control.
The invention will he jnirtieularl explained in the specific description follow ingz-- Reference is to he had to the. aceonnmnying drawings forming a. part of this speei fication, in which similar characters of ref erenoe indicate UUII'USINJIHliIlg parts in all views:
figure 1, is a fragmentary perspective view of several pieces of work, showing the clamp eoi'istructod in aeeordaliee with the invention applied.
Fig. 2, is a sectional view on the line :2-2 of Fig. 1; looking in. the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the follower clamping part.
Fig. 41, is a perspective view of the other clamping part.
Fig. 5, is .a perspective view of the operating handle or lever.
In constructing a practical onilnaliment. of the invention in accordance with the illustrated example. the pair of chains 5, is provided, each comprising a series of linksof elongated ova] form, althougl'i any other type. of link chain may he used and of the required length.
Permanently connected with the chains 5,
atone end. is a suhstanlial U shaped clanipin r part (i. constituting a straddling tail jaw. the ends of the latter providing ears 7, having suitable holes for looselj' receiving the terminal links of said chains, which in this manner are t-onneelwl to the tail jaw.
The chains 5 at their other ends are adjust alll and delachahl r connected to a substan tially U-shnped follower clampine part H. which constitutes a straddling head jaw. the crown .l of which is of suhstaulially eir eular shape. and the side linihs ll) are Hat. and in spaced parallel relation to each other.
The limhs III at their ends are formed with llflilt'tllt'tl outwardly curled hook like law- 11, in which are adapted to he engaged the links of the chains 3. for connect ing the jaws in properly spaced relation to each other.
'lo connect the hains 5 to the claws ll. thoselected links: thereof are passed into the hifureations. so that the adjacent links will engage in the claws 11. thereby holding the. chains .3 connected with the head jaw.
lt will he apparent. that this head jaw is adjuslal lr and detaehahly connected with the chains .3. so as to properly fit the clamp to the work.
Hli(ltllll mounted hetweon the limbs 10, ot' the. head jaw. is the follower plate 12, which is formed with the notched ends 13, engaging the edges of the limbs it), for the slidahle connection oi the follower plate in the head jaw.
'lhrcaded centrall through the. crown of the head law. is a feed screw lzl, which is provided witha shouldered outer wrench engaging: end 15. for the detachable connection therewith of an operating wrench or lever handle 11'. while the inner endof the. screw 1 lits within a counterseat 17, in the follower plate 12, which is engaged against the work when the clamp is applied thereto, to hold the pieces of work lirm and snhstantial, the screw 14, heing designed to more. the follower plate against the work.
In applying the clamp. the jaws are connected by the chains 5. to properly hold the piece,- of work. for example. as shown in ltig. l of the drawing. and when the work' is in the form of hoards 18. of'relatively narrow thickness. -the jaws are set. at an angle. so that. the'upperuiost ears 7, and limbs 10 at. their edges adjacent to the top. surfaces of the hoards will contact; t erewith, while. the lowermost ears 7 anti l mhs,
When the clamp is properly positioned on the work, the feed screw 14, is turned to advance the follower plate 12, against said work to firmly hold it in the clamp.
The clamp possesses but few parts, is readily portable, and when not in use, can be stored in the least possible space. The clamp in action draws from both sides of the Work, so that the pressure thereon is distributed.
From the fore oing, it is thought that the construction an manner of use, as well as the operation of the invention, will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1.- A clamp comprising a substantially U- shaped tail Jaw formed with terminal ears,
chains permanently connected with the ears, a-substantially U-shaped head jaw, bifurcated claws on the ends of said head jaw for adjustably and detachably receiving the links of said chains, a follower plate slidably fitted in the head 'aw, and means for adjusting the follower ate.
2. A clamp comprising a pair of straddling jaws, chains permanently connected with one of said aws, bifurcated claws formed at the ends of the other jaw for adjustabl and detachabl receiving the links of sai chains. 11 fol owor plate slidably fitted in one of the jaws, and a feed screw mounted in the jaw having the follower plate for adjusting the latter.
3. A clamp cmnprising a sl'ihstantially U- shaped tail jaw formed with terminal curs to straddle the work, chums permanently connected with the ears. a substantially U- shaped head jaw ha \'in; side limbs to strad dle the work, claws at the end of the limbs for detachably receivilne the links of said chains, a follower plate slidablc in the head jaw between the limbs for enga in; the work, and a feed screw mountcr in the head jaw and engaging the follower plate to move the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HAWK.-
