Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr, 9, 1918..
Application filed May 23, 1917. Serial'No. 170,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Anne A. CURTIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menomonie, in the county of Dunn and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinet- Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as w1ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
This invention relates to improvements 1n a cabinet latch and more particularly to a kitchen cabinet and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby the door of the cabinet may be unlocked by actuating the lock with the foot.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a catch upon the door adapted to engage a spring actuated member upon the cabinet, which member is adapted to be actuated by the foot for releasing the catch..
A further object of this invention is the provision of a rod slidably mountedupon the cabinet and having one end bent at right angles to engage the catch and having secured to its other end, a foot pedal, whereby upon pressing upon the foot pedal, the right angled end of the rod will be disengaged from the catch thereby unlatching the door. A further object of this invention is the I provision of a handle secured to said rod and disposed exteriorly of the cabinet, whereby the rod may be actuated by the hand when desired.
A. still further object of this invention is the provision of-a cabinet latch of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary rear elevation Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken 'on the I line 2-2 ofTig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the latching rod,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bearing for the rod,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of aplate for receiving a hand operating means for the rod.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a cabinet having the usual hinged door 2 on which is secured, a catch 3 consisting of a securing plate 1 having formed thereon, a shank 5. The shank 5 has formed thereon, the usual beveled head 6.
A cup shaped hearing 7 has formed thereon, an attaching flange 8, which is secured to the bottom of the cabinet in any well known manner.
The cup shaped bearing 7 slidably receives a rod 9, which is further supported on the cabinet by an eye bolt 10. The upper end of the rod 9 is bent at right angles to form a latching extension 12, which is adapted to engage the beveled head 6 of the catch 3 for latching the door 2 to. the cabinet 1. Offset projections 13 are formed upon the rod 9 and have one end of the coiled spring 14 disposed thereag'ainst while has secured thereto, a foot pedal 15, by
nuts 16, whereby upon ressing downwardly upon the foot pedal, t e latching extension 12 will be moved downwardly to disengage the catch 3 to free the door. By releasing the pressure from the foot pedal 15, the
spring 14 returns the rod to its normal position and positions the latching extension 12 so that the catch 3 will again engage the same upon closing the door 2.
A'handle 17 is secured to the rod 9 and disposed through a slot 18 in the wall of the cabinet 1 and has formed upon its outer end, a finger grip 19, whereby the rod 9 or foot.
may be moved downwardly by the hand when desiring to unlatch the door 2. plate 20,having an elongated slot 21 is so 'cured to the wall of the cabinet 1 over the slot 18 and the -member 17 is disposed through the slot 21.
From the foregolng description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing,
by any other well known means so that the foot pedal 15 is in such a position that a person may readily press upgn the same with his foot to unlatch the door.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, a
incense bearing secured to a cabinet, a vertical rod slidable through said bearing and having its upper end-bent at right angles to form .a catch adapted to engage a keeper carried by the cabinet door, outwardly and, down-' wardly-extending extensions formed on said rod, a coil spring on said rod and havin one end disposed against the extensions an its other end disposed in the cup-shaped bearing for urging the catch on the rod in engagement with the keeper, a foot pedal secured to the lower end of the rod for moving said rod downwardly against the tension of the spring to disengage the catch from the keeper, and a handle secured to the rod at a point above the spring for operating said rod. V
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ARLO A. CURTIS.
