SHOP STOOL AND STAND.
$pecification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN A. H THORNE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of WVaukegan, in the county of Lake, State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shop Stools and Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening means for securing the supporting legs of shop stools and the like, to the top member thereof, and has for its object To provide a simple and substantial structural formation and association of parts, whereby the stool members are connected together in a rigid, substantial and economical manner capable of ready disassemblage when required, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is an elevation illustrating the general association of parts in the present improvement.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged detail central vertical section of the preferred form of the fastening means.
Fig. 3, is a detail plan view of the same.
Fig. 4, is an enlarged detail central vertical section of a modified form of the fastening means.
Fig. 5, is a detail perspective view of the upper end of one of the supporting legs.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the top member of a stool or stand, and 2 the supporting legs thereof, and having the usual spread form as shown.
3 designates an attaching head or plate fixedly secured to the underside of the aforesaid top member 1 by screws or other usual fastening means. In the present improvement said head or plate 3 is of a dished form providing a central concave recess, which in turn is provided with a circularly disposed series of orifices 5 adapted to receive the upper and attaching ends of the legs 2 on a plane beneath the top surface of the head or plate 3 as shown.
4 designates a central hub forming an integral part of the head or plate 3, with its bore adapted to receive the shank of the hereinafter described clamping bolt.
6 designates a series of abutment lugs on the attaching head 3 aforesaid, disposed in the central recess above described and at the outer margins of the orifices 5 aforesaid, and formed with inclined inner abut ment faces as shown.
The supporting legs 2 above referred to, are preferably formed of structural channel metal as shown, and their lower portions are tied or braced together by the usual ring 7 or equivalent spider, while their upper ends are formed with lateral notches 8 adapted for engagement with the web of the attaching head 3 adjacent to the outer margins of the orifices 5 aforesaid. In the preferred form of the present improvement the upper and attaching ends of the legs 2 are bent obliquely to the main portions of the legs as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to afford broad and substantial bearing surfaces for the wedge piece now to be described.
9 designates a wedge piece formed with a central orifice for the passage of the shank of the clamping bolt above referred to and with tapering sides adapted for bearing engagement with the upper ends of the supporting legs 2, as shown.
'10 designates the clamping bolt above referred to passing through the central orifices of the head 3 and wedge piece 9 and having the usual fixed head at one end and an adjustable nut at the other end. The association of parts are such, that a tightening movement of the adjustable nut of the bolt 10 will cause a binding action of the wedge piece 9 against the inner faces of the upper ends of the series of legs 2 to clamp the same in place against the outer margins of the orifices 5 of the head 3, and against the inner faces of the series of abutment lugs 6, to effect a rigid and substantial attachment of the parts.
In the preferred form of the present improvement illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the series of abutment lugs 6 and the wedge block 9 are located in the cavity of the cupshaped attaching head 3, so as to be out of view, while in the modified structure shown in Fig. 4;, the said abutment lugs 6 and wedge piece 9 are located beneath said cupshaped attaching head 3.

Preference is given to legs formed of structural channel metal, in that the upper side Webs of each leg 2, may be made to straddle its individual abutment lug 6, to holdthe parts against independent lateral sway and aid inattaining greater rigidity in the assembled structure.
Having thus fully described my said invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stool or like structure, the combination of a head adapted for attachment to the underside or a. top member and having a central concave receiving recess in its up per face, a centrally arranged bolt orifice and. a series of abutment lugs and companion orifices concentric With said bolt orifice, aseries of legs formed with notches in their upper ends adapted'for bearing engagement with the abutment lugs aforesaid, a Wedge piece formed With a central orifice, and a clamping bolt passing through the central tlcpies of a series of abutment lugs and companion orifices concentric with said boltorifice, a
series of legs formed of channel metal and having notches in their upper ends adapted for bearing engagement with said abutment lugs and with their side Webs straddling said lugs, a Wedge piece through the central orifices of the Wedge piece and the head aforesaid, substantially as.
