HORACE Gr. BROWN, OF COLLINSVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,013, dated April 23,1822. 4
SPEcmroATloN.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE Gr. BROWN, of Collinsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Irenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
My invention consists in a new method of securing the rest against which the adjusting screw of a monkey-wrenchy abuts to the bar which forms the fixed part of the wrench, and to the end of which the handle is usually attached. The object of my improvement is to obtain a more rigid and strong connection between the parts, so as to prevent all yielding or spring when the tool is in use.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents the side of a wrench having my improvement, with the wood part of the handle removed to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
A is the bar of the wrench, with the fixed head or jaw B at one end, and which is tapered at the other to receive the handle. C is the movable jaw, sliding on the bar A in the usual manner. It is furnished with a nut lfor receiving the screw D, which moves it back and forth, as desired. E is a milled head for turning the screw D; this head is usually let a short distance into the bar A, forming a shoulder, which prevents the screw from being moved forward. l F is the rest against which the screw D abuts, and which receives the whole pressure from the jaw when the tool is in use. Gis the ferrule 0f the handle. The rest F is inserted into the bar A by making a recess in the latter for receiving the elongated base of the rest, as shown in the drawing. The base of the rest is carried rearward under the handle, and fits into the bar A with a dovetailed or square joint, so that the part which extends into the handle forms part of the tang of the handle. This piece F is rmly bound to the bar A by the ferrule G, which is irmly driven on with the handle, or vset in its place before the wooden part is attached. The handle is fastened on by means of a small nut, 0r riveted in any usual manner.
By means of my improvement the strain, when the tool is in use, is brought directly from the end of the screw D to the bar A, and not transmitted to the handle, as is usually the case. The rest F is sometimes welded directly onto the bar A; but my improvement makes a stronger fastening, owing to the difficulty of getting a perfect weld, and at the same time a cheaper and better one.
Claims.
held together by the ferrule G, substantially as described.
2. The combination and arrangement of the separate parts F, G, and A, substantially asherein described.
