a citizen of the United States. residinv at New York city, in the county oi' New hol-lt' and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be u full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will env able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
'Ihe present invention has relation to 1mprovements in spring cli s for fastening papers together at their e ges.
Many forms of clips have been proposed wherein are employed Suitable lengths of wire of proper resilience and temper bent in various shapes, and so arranged as to be applied over the edge of two or more sheets of paper, cardboard or the like So as to grip or compress the same firmlyl together. Many of these, while acting effectively for the purpose in view when once 1n place, are nevertheless dillicult to apply to the edletes intended to be gripped.
'It is the object of the present invention to VVprovide an improvement applicable to practically all forms of cli of this general charaeter, as well as to c ips made of material other than wire, whereby the saine are made more easily and conveniently adjustable to theshects to be fastened together.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention in connection with a number of well known clips and also as applied to a sheet metal clin: but it is to be understood that I do not limit my invention to its use in connection with these particular forms, since the sinne is capable of embodiment in an indefinitely large number of shapes and 'arrangements In these drawings Figures 1 and 2 are respectively a face and an edge view of one form of nl v clip, Figs. 3 and 4 are similar' views of another modification, Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of another modification, Figs. 7 and S are similar views of another modification, Figs. 9 and l0 fll' Similar views of another modification, Figs. 11 and 12 are similar views of another modification, Figs. 13 and 14 are similar views of another modification. and Figs. 15 and 16 are similar views of another modification.

In Fig. .l is shown a clip of afamiliar form in which a single length of resilient wire is so coiled as to form a shorter member 2O of loop form and a longer member 2l of similar form. The papers are pressed in between these two loops, and are held together by their tendency to assume a com mon plane. When this form of clip is made in accordance with my invention, a, slight return bend 22 is formed in the longer loop 2l as clearly shown-in Fig. 2. This is concave toward the shorter loop 20, as shown, and affords a, leading-in point to which the edges of the united sheets are applied in the manner indicated in dotted lines, the same being led by the curve directly under the extremity of the shorter member. By this expedient a certain and expeditious application of a clip is accomplished.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the longer member of the wire. clip is a U-shaped loop 23 and is rovided with concave return bends 22. he shorter member is duplicated in the extr ties of the Wire which are bent back bstantially r parallel with the Sides of he U and are, carried down far enou h to bring their extremities about oppositet ebends 22.
In Figs. 5` and G, the two loops of Figs. l and 2 are given a triangular form, and the longer of the two has the intaking or inleading bend 22.
Figs. T and 8 show a clip formed of a length of wire formed in a Wide U shape, thc ends boing curved in toward each other and led down parallel to form the longer resilient member. The lower extremitiesI are preferably again curved upward at 24 toward the U-shaped shorter member, and the entire longer member is given a. return bend 22 for the purpose described.
In Figs. 9 and 10 the shorter member is a triangular loop and the longer memberis formed by a single end carried downI behind the middle of the loop and p rovided with the inleeding bend 22 as before.
In Figs. 11 and 12 the shorter member shown in Fig. 9 is'modied in form and the end of the wire which is not carried down is made to weave under and overl the other parts of the wire, as shown at 25.
Figs. 1B and 14 show e. form somewhat like that shown in Figs. 3 and 4, but here the return bends at the ends of the Wire, forming together the shorter member, are more greatly extended, and are given two square turns 26, 27, as shown.
