IMPROVEMENT IN TOOL-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 125,922, dated April 23,1872; antedatcd April 13, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK A. WILL, and JULIUS FINOK, of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Tool-Handles; and we do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use the said invention without further invention or experiment.
' Our invention relates to an improved handle or holder for small tools, such as are used by dentists; its object being to provide a cheap and convenient handle, capable of serving for any number of small tools, such as excavators, burr-holders, and like instruments.
In order to explain our invention so that others will be able to understand its construction, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which A represents a metal handle or tool-holder, which can, ifdesired, be provided with a covering or handle of any suitable material. In order to prepare this handle for holding tools we drill out a hole, 11, in one end, extending longitudinally toward its middle, and to any required depth, so as to form a socket for receiving the tool. The bottom of this socket is made triangular and of a V-shape, as shown. \Ve then split the extremity of the tool-holder lengthwise with the socket into three or more fingers, c, which extend about one third of the distance toward the bottom of the socket, so as to form springs for holding the tool. The
tool D has its body somewhat larger than the opening at the extremity of the fingers, and its base is made triangular and pyramidal to correspond with the bottom of the socket; but with very small tools this socket and pyramidal base can be dispensed with.
In inserting a tool into this holder any pinching-tool with which to grasp the tool can be employed; then, by pressing the triangular end into the socket the fingers will be separated, and the tool can be fully insertedso that its base rests in the corresponding triangular bottom of the socket. The springing together of the fingers will hold the tool firm.
By only allowing the fingers to extend a short distance toward the bottom of the socket there will be no danger of their being broken by pressure upon the tool, as a sufficient bearing is left below them to protect them. 7
By this means we provide a cheap and substantial tool-holder, capable of serving for any number of tools.
Having thus described our invention, what we desire to secure by Letters Patent isv The handle A provided with a socket, b, the bottom of which is triangular and of a V-shape, and provided with the springs or fingers c, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
