CLOTHES PIN.
APPLICATION FILED AU G.II, 191s.
Patented Feb. 26, 19181 INVENTOR ATTORNEY CLO'IUHIEZEMB J i Application filed llugg ust 13., 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, RUBEN EL litosnn- BERGER, a citizen of the United titates re siding at Dewey, in the county of Ya vapai and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to clasps ot the coacting jaw type and has for an object to provide a glasp in which the jaws are formed of wire held in pivotal relation hy plates forming the balance of the clasp.
Another object of the invention is to form a clasp of the character described which may be readily and cheaply made and adapted to support clothes or the like from a line or similar support.
In addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter descr1oed and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
- In the accompanying drawings in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they I appear:
Figure l' is a view in side elevation of a clasp constructed after the manner of my invent1on.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a View thereof 111 p an. Fig. 4: is View thereof in rear elevation, and
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4, but illustrating' a modification.
With reference to the drawings, 1 indiportion, as indicated at 3, to further space apart the terminals of the members. llhe terminals oi each member are further con: ne'cted by means oi plates or the line l, crimped at opposite longitudinal edges around the terminals of the strands a distance approximately midway o'l their length as indicated at 5., the plates being; provided at said central portion with parallel opposed ears 6. The ears of one plate specification of Letters latent.
Patented lFeh. 25h, Mild serial no. 114,424.
are adapted to be disposed between. the ears or the opposite plate and all pivotally connected by means of a pintle 7 penetrating apertures provided in the ears. The momhers are thus pivoted together for relative movement, permitting spacing of the curved. portions 9. of the aws to grip articles therebetween.
it plate 8 formed of a strip of resilient metal is bent substantially in the form of the letter U, the intermediate portion of which. is engaged about the pintlc If and the terminals thereof bearing against the inner sides oil. the plates l. lln this manner the operating ends of the clasp are urged apart and the curved portions 2 oi the clumping jaws normally hold in contact. ll desired the plates may he provided with apertures 9 to permit the clasp to be suspended from a hook or the like when an article of clothing; is held between the jaws.
l n ii of the drawings l have illustrated a clasp which is constructed in a manner identical with the form just described except for the substitution of a means for retaining the jaws in clamped relation. This means comprises a section of Wire 10 engaging around the pintle 7 with its terminals at right angles as at 11 to firmly bear against the under sides of the plates 4. The operation of this form of clasp is otherwise the same as the foregoing.
Thus it will be seen that l have provided a simple form of. clasp, which may be readily and cheaply constructed. The rounded ends elf-the jaws formed as they are of wire, preventing mutilation of articles of clothing which is the case when clasps' having serrated edges are employed. @ther changes will be apparent as persons become familiar with their use.
While l have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, ll realize that in practice various alterations thereover may he made and I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing" the form of the details oi. construction, or
otherwise altering; the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing; from the spirit of the invention or the scope oil the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what ll claim as newand desire to secure by lLetters Patent is:
ll clasp comprising coacting' relatively movable jaws, each termed oi a stranded:
Wire U-shaped, a pair of plates, each having opposite edges extending around the terminals of one of the'jaws to form 2f finger grip, apertured ears formed on said plates at a pointintermediate the ends of the j aws, a pintle entering said ears to pivot the jaws for relative movement, and a flat spring extending upon itself at a point intermediate its ends and engaged around the pintle, with the terminals of saidspring extending in opposite directions to engage the inner side of the plates whereby to retain the bight portion of the jaws in'elainped engagement. In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUBEN E. ROSENBERGER.
