OSCAR. L. KEYS., 0F HAZARD, KENTUCKY.
GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Ltatented Feb, Ml, i913.
pp'licationled November 17, 1917. Serial No. 262,50.
To all whom i may concern.
Be it known that OSCAR L. KEYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazard, in the countyl of Derry and State of Kentucky', have invented' certain new and useful improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadV to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to certain improvements in gates and has relation more particularly to a device of this general charac ter especially designed and adapted for use in mines or the like, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means whereby the gate may be automatically adjusted into an open position and which is normally maintained in closed position.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a gate which is automatically moved into open position through the medium of a vehicle traveling in a direction toward said gate.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention t0 provide a novel and improved construction of this general character wherein the operating means is under control of flanged supporting wheels carried by the vehicle. l
rEhe invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved gate wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter claimed.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
ln order` that my invention may be the better understood l will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a gate and an operating means therefor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section of my improved structure as herein embodied; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in top plan illustrating certain features of my improved structure as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawingsT denotes a trackway extended along a gallery of a mine or the like and which also passes through the door frame F. Supported by the frame if adjacent the opposite sides of the gallery or the like are the vertically disposed rock shaftsy l to which are fixed the doers D which substantially entirely intersect the gallery or the like when in closed position and which extend above the trackway T. The lower end portion of each of the shafts l has fixed thereto the diverging arms 2. rlhe arms are disposed in a direction toward the trackway T and to the outer or free extremity of each of said arms r2 is pivotally engaged a rod 3 having engaged with its inner end portion a turn buckle 4. The turn buckle a is also operatively engaged with the short lever 5 which is pivotally engaged with an end portion. of an elongated member 6 substantially shaped in cross section. Tie opposite end portion of each of the members 6 has secured thereto a shank or stem Z loosely directed through the adjacent rail R and provided at its outer end with the enlargement or head 8. interposed between the head 8 and the outer faces of the web of the rail R is the expansible member 9 herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring encircling the shank 7 and which serves to normally maintain the adjacent end portion of the member 6 in contact with the inner faces of the rail R. T he inner or first named end portion of each of the members 6 has suitably secured thereto a retractile spring l0 also anchored at a point inwardly of the member 6 and which serves to normally maintain the member 6 in divergent relation with the adjacent rail R. rlhe spring 10 also serves to normally maintain a door D in closed position. lt is also to be noted that each of the rods 3 co-acts with the elongated member 6 at the side of the shaft l opposite to that in which its co-acting arm 2 is normally positioned.
As the rolling stock traveling upon the rails R of the trackways T approaches the doors D the flanges of said rolling stock will engage a set of members 6 and impart outward or separating movement thereto which results in rotary movement being imparted to the shafts 1 and the consequent opening of the doors D. After the rolling stock has passed between the doors D the retractile springs 10 will serve to return the members 6 to their normal positions and also to cause the doors D to return to their closed or normal position. As the rolling stock continues to travel over the rails R the flanges of the wheel will readily pass between the outer end portions of the second set of members 6 and the rails R as the expansible member 9 will permit suilicient in- Ward movement of the outer end portions of said second member 6 to assure no interference or obstruction to the travel of the rolling stock.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a gate constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without materially departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with the rails of a trackvvay, a vertically disposed shaft, a door carried by said shaft, diverging arms carried by the lower end portion of the shaft, elongated members angular in cross section disposed longitudinally of the inner faces of the rails at opposite sides of the shaft, yieldable means for directly connecting the'outer end portions of the elongated members to the rails, means co-acting with the inner end portions of the elongated members for normally maintaining said inner end portions of the elongated members separated from the rail, and operative connections be tween the inner end portions of the elongated members and the arms of the shaft.
2. In combination with the rails of a trackway, a vertically disposed shaft, a door carried by said shaft, diverging arms carried by the lower endportion of the Shaft, elongated members angular in cross section disposed longitudinally of the inner faces of the rails at opposite Ysides of the shaft,
osoAR L. Kurs.
