To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL HAAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hettinger, in the county of Adams and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Devices and lVire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in block and tackle equip ment and as its principal object contemplates the provision of a block and tackle which may be effectively employed in stretching fence wires, hoisting material, producing the desired tension on cables during the operation of splicing their ends or for the performance of any other analogous operation.
A further object of this invention is to construct the device with such regard to proportion, number and arrangement of parts that it may be cheaply manufactured, will be durable and efficient in its action and may be readily employed in any of the operations above set forth.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
lVith reference to the drawings, wherein I have llustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is the front elevation.
Fig. 2 is the side elevation.
Proceeding now to the description of the drawings the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a multiple pulley block equipped with the usual attaching hook 2. A cable 3 plays through the pulley block 1 and is designed to be wound upon a winding spool 4: which is journaled in the side members 5 and 6 of a substantially rectangular spool frame, the one end of which extends laterally to the members 5 and 6 and is designated by the numeral 7, the other of which consists of two angular frame members 8 and 9 formed integrally with the members 5 and 6. The members 8 and 9 are bent at their extreme terminals to produce a pair of apertured cars 10 and 11 which extend in parallel relation to each other and are designed to receive between their adjacent faces an idler pulley 12 which is rotatably mounted on a pin 18. The pin 13 extends beyond the outer faces of the members 10 and 11 to receive the apertured terminals of a U-shaped clevis 1 L employed in attaching one terminal of the cable 3 to the frame. The winding spool t is equipped with a pair of terminal spacing disks 15 and 16, which are provided for the obvious purpose of preventing the chafing of the cable 3 against the side frame members 5 and 6 during the winding and unwinding operations. Formed integrally with the spool 4t and disposed exteriorly ofthe side frame member 6 is a handle 17 of the usual type. The transverse frame member 7 carries a pair of swivel eyes 18 to which are attached the terminals of a connecting chain 19. An attaching hook 20 is connected to the chain 19 and at the middle point thereof.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that in operation the terminal of the wire which the operator desires to stretch may be attached to the hook 2 and the hook 20 may be secured to a fence post or any other adjacent structure. By rotating the handle 17, the operator may readily wind the cable 3 on the spool thus shortening the distance between the block 1 and the idler pulley 12 with a resultant tightening of the wire which is being stretched. In order to permit the operator to release the handle 17 without permitting the spool 4: to unwind there has been provided a locking arm 21 which consists essentially in an elongated metal bar or rod pivotally attached as at 22 to the central point of the transverse frame member 7'. The free end of the member 21 arranged to extend a slight distance beyond the side frame member 6 and is designed to be limited in its swinging movement by the side frame member 6. It will be apparent, therefore, that by swinging the arm 21 into the position indicated in Fig. 2 the operator may prevent the negative rotation of the handle 17 through a greater distance than through one revolution. It will also be apparent from the foregoing that by swinging No. 21 into a position of lateral relation to the transverse frame member 7, the handle 17 may be allowed to rotate in the desired manner when the operator is winding or unwinding the cable 3.
