'WARMAIRREGISTER BORDER.
ASpecification.of Letters Patent.
Appli-catiomledFebruary 16,1916. -Seria1No. $78,612.
To "all 'whom #mag/concern Y "Be it knownthat I, VV'ILLIAM T. TRUAX, a YCitizen ofthe United VStates, residing at Battle Creek, in the lcounty of vCalhoun and State of Michigan, have Vinvented certain new and usetul Improvements in farm- Air-Register Borders, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to warm air register borders, and belongs to that class of cast metal orsheet metal frames that are set into apertures cut in floors'or walls Ito ref ceive them, the office of the border or frame being to support the hot register box at a safe distance from the woodwork of 'the flooring.
The object of this invention 1s the'production of a register border of the class statedl comprising parts of special construction and arrangement, usually of stamped metal, and secured together at their ends by rivets. rlhe construction and arrangements ofthe parts of this invention are believed to render the manufacture thereof easier and cheaper and more readily assembled than is the case with like borders now in the market.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, Figure l represents a vertical section through a portion of a floor to which this invention has been applied, this invention being shown in section lengthwise, with a register therein. Fig. 2 is a front view of one corner of a register border constructed in accordance with this invention, the parts being shown full size. Fig. 3 illustrates the reverse side of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Throughout the drawings and the following descriptive explanation, the same letter is employed to refer to the same part.
Considering the drawings, it will be noted that this invention comprises the longitudinal member A, having the inner depressed flange a, and the transverse member B having the depressed inner edge or iange It will be understood that a complete border constructed in accordance with this invention has two members A and two members B, and that they are secured together at their ends at right angles with each other. The flanges a and b, form a seat 'for the top plate C of a warm air register box D, and the register is thereby supported within the border or frame and may not be displaced sidewise or :endwise while inthe position '.Sf
Ving the vhot register box at some distance from the wood flooring.
The longitudinal member A has a Fdepressed outer-edge or rim G, and between the outer -edgeG and thecflange ais a relatively ,raised hollow or dished -lportion g.
ln Fig. 2 .it will be noted that the hollow raised portion g extends to the end, or nearly to theend ofthe member. In Fig.
y2 it will be seen that the member B also has the outer depressed edge portion H, and the relatively raised hollow portion h between the outer edge H and the flange b. ln Fig. 3 it is shown that the hollow raised portion t does not extend to the end of the member, but near the end the member B is flattened, and the rivets J secure the iattened portion K of the member B in the extended hollow raised portion g of the member A, as illustrated in Fig. 8. In other words, the end of one member is passed beneath the end ot the other member and is provided with the downwardly projecting floor-engaging lugs E and e. rlhe only riveting necessary is to secure the flat end K of the member B to the member A. Such construction produces a warm air register border, comprising a rectangular frame consisting of duplicate end members and duplicate side members, the outside edge and right-angled corners of the end members having relatively narrow, flat edge portions, and raised portions within such edge portions and extending to them. The raised portions are provided with right-angled corners, and into such corners on the under side of the raised portions, the Hat, right-angled end portions of the side members, such as the portion K, are introduced, and riveted as shown. The lugs E and c, which face at right angles with each other and engage the corners of the openings in the licor, are projecting pieces of the portion K. It is not Patented ,.Feb. 12,1918.
intendedlto confine this invention to the precise forms indicated in the drawings, as other and, if desirable, more ornamentalconfigurations may be adopted, the parts still keeping substantially the mechanical shapes and arrangement set forth.
YIn the operation of this invention, twoV members A and two members B are secured together to form a rectangular frame or border of the customary character, and the floor is provided with a suitable opening f having right angle corners. When a border constructed in accordance with this invention isset into the floor opening f, the edges of the opening f areengaged near the corners by the Hoor lugs e and E, and the border cannot become displaced either lengthwise or to one side. A register box D is then nected with it by some additional operation.
Each member is a single piece of stamped metal.
Having now described this invention, and explained the manner of its use, what I claim is A warm air register border, comprising a rectangular frame consisting of duplicate end members and duplicate side members, the said members having relatively narrow flat edge portions along the inside and outside edges and ends and raised portions within the said edges and extending to them, the said raised portions of theend members having rightangled corners, the said side members having Hat right-angled end portions constructed to fit into the under sides of the .said right-angled corners ofY the raised portions of the said end members and being riveted thereto, the said liat end portions of the side members havingintegral pieces thereof turned downwardly and arranged at right angles with each other to engage an opening in a floor, the openings in the said end portions from which the said pieces are displaced being covered by the said right-angled corners of the said members.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
