PENCIL-HOLDER.

To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOAME E. PFAHLER, a citizen of the'United States, and resident of Hopewell, in the county of Prince George, Virginia, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specilication.

The present invention relates to stationery and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in pencil holders.

An object of my invention is to provide in a novel and cheaply constructed holder an effective and useful. device for receiving, retaining and feeding a lead pencil or the like, the device embodying novel and improved means for cutting a thread in a pencil whereby the same may be removed to a desired length from the holder and returned to the same vafter use so that the entire length of the pencil may be used instead of one-half or one-third ofthe pencil being thrown away as is now the usual practice.

Another object of my invention is to provide a holder of the class described which will firmly support a pencil in'position for writing and will house and protect the pencil when not in use, as Well as retain the same against loss.

A further object of my invention is to provide a pencil holder having means for retaining and feeding a pencil, said means consistingv of a novel arrangementl o f cutting elements for forming threads in the wood body of a pencil or in the composition from which the pencil may be formed. My invention further contemplates the provision of a 'holder which may be sold with the pencil or independently thereof for use in connection with any pencil.

Other objects andadvantages to be derived from the use of the several forms of my invention will annear from the following Specification of Letters Patent.

My invention contem lates the rovision of a 'pencil holder having a nove feedin means permanently associated therewith an the preferred form of my invention is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, wherein the body of the holder is designated 10 and comprises preferably a cylindrical tube open at both ends. The tube is provided, adjacent one end thereof, with a plurality of slots 11 arranged in spaced relation spirally, the metal struck from the body 10 to form said slots being turned inwardly to form cutting edges 12.

A pencil is shown and designated 13, the same being inserted into the tube 10 from the end opposite that having the cutting element. The pencil is sharpened prior to insertion and when the body of the pencil reaches the lcuttin members 12 the sharpened extremity ferred to. The non-cutting end of the tube 10 may be provided with a closure cap 14 so that the pencil, when not in use, may be r e turned to the holder and allowed to remain therein until required for further use.

In Fig. 4 I have illustrated .a inodiiied form of my invention, the same being designed where a composition holder is provided. or where it is impracticable to formy the cutting element on the holder body. In

this instance I provide a' tubular body 15,

or the like, the same being open at both ends. A short tubular section 16 is receivable in one end of the body 15, said section being provided with an inwardly directed cutting element 17 practicallyidentical with which may be formed of hard rubber, wood the cutting element 12 hereinbefore referred to. rilhe pencil proper is designated 1S and is inserted in the same manner in which the pencil is inserted into the body 10.

To hold the pencil when not in use l provide a short tubular retaining clamp 19 formed of a strip of metal rolled, the marginal edges thereof being in slight spacedv relation as indica-ted at 20 in Fig. To lend resiliency to the body the same is provided with a slot 21 which is at a point practically diametrically opposite to the marginal edges of the blank when rolled. The member 19 as shown in Fig. 5 is to be inserted into the body 15' and adhesively maintained therein. A portion of the member 19 is extended to form a tongue 22, which latter projects beyond the free end of the body 15 to provide means for engagement to release the pencil held thereby. As fully illustrated in Fig. 4 ot the drawings, the rolled retaining clamp 19, has one portion thereof between the slot 21 and the rollededges, slightly inclined inwardly, to form a gripping jaw. rll`liis is the normal position of the jaw, and owing to the 'act that the strip is resilient the said jaw will move slightly out toward the inner surface of the holder when a pencil is positioned in the retaining clamp. rllhe retaining clamp comes into operation, when the pencil is released from the feed means at the front end of the holder 15, and the holder is then -1nverted, and the pencil will drop down to the end in which the retaining clamp is poi sitioned. The opposite end of the pencil will slide into the rolled strip and be wedgedl against the inclined jaw portion thereof. 'l`his contact will be suhcient to firmly hold the pencil within the holder against rattling, but the same is adapted to be `released therefrom, upon movement of the projecting tongue 22 outwardly, which will force the jaw against the inner surface ot the holder, hence allowing the pencil to be released upon a slight tap on said holder to drop down tor engagement once more with the feed means. l

4Referring to Figs. 6 and 7 wherein a further modiiiedform of my invention is shown, I provide a tubular body 24, the n same being open at both ends similar to the body 10. However, one free end of the margin oil3 the body 2a isspirally cut and bent inwardly' to form a spiral annularblade 25, the end portions thereof being odset as at 26 owing to the spiral arrangement or the sameon said body. The operation of this i'orin of my invention is practically identical with the forms orp the invention hereinbe- :tore referred to, and may be applied in the same manner as the forms shown in Fig. Ll.

Referring to Fig. 8 wherein a further modified torni ot my invention is shown l provide a tubular body 27 which may be needed? strip 28 as coiled is inserted into the body 27 and may be maintained in position by soldering or other suitable fastening means.

A. still further modified form of my invention is shown in Fig. 9, the same embodying a tubular holder 32 formed of metal or a composition as desired.' The cutting and feeding element comprises a ring 33 receivable within the tube 32 and adapted to be secured therein adjacent one end thereof. rlfhe ring 33 is provided with a plurality of spiral-",corrugations, the inner projecting edges .thereof being sharpened to provide cutting edges 34. A still further modified form of my invention is shown in Fig. 10,r` the tubular body being designated 35, one free end thereof being spirally Vcorrugated as at 36, the inner edges 37 being sharpened to provide cutters for forming threads in a pencil or the like. ln this form of the invention the corrugations are made integral with the body, but inthe last preceding form de 'be readily applied as shown in Fig. 4, and

the gripping tongue 22 `may be' as readily associated with the body 10 as with the body l5. rll`liis arrangement may be embodied in the forms of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 10 without material alteration oit the structure. l also desire to direct attention to the fact that the devices of my invention may be sold as independent articles, or may be sold with pencils arranged therein and ready for immediate use. lt is preferable that the pencil body be formed of a soft wood so as to facilitate the formation or threads therein, however, the pencil holding device may be made of suiiiciently strong material to allow provision of a heavy cutting element.

From the above description taken in connection with' the accompanying drawings,

it, is thought that a. clear and comprehensive la@ understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I haveshown and described the device 'as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A. pencil holder of the class described including a tubular body, pencil engaging means at one end thereof adapted to move a pencil into or out of the body, a rolled spring metal stripvin the other end of said body, and said strip being slit longitudinally, one portion forming' an inwardly incllned gripping jaw adapted to engage a 'pencil when the same is released in said Ypencil into and out of the ody, a rolled spring metal strip on the other end of said body, said strip being slit longitudinally, one portion forming an inwardly inclined gripping jaw, and a projecting tongue on the outer end 0f said jaw extending from the body whereby said jaw may be released.
