Description

J. A. GENDRON.
LOOM.
APPLICATION HLED MAY 9. 1915.
Patented Feb. 5, 1918.
A@ m E JOSEPH A. GENDRON, OF NASI-IUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE. 1/
LOOM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5, 1918.
Application filed May 9, 1916. Serial No. 96,339.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. GENDRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looms, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to looms; and it contemplates the provision in a loom of improved means for preventing clogging of the openings of the grid employed on the lay beam in combination with stop-motion mechanism, this with a view to maintaining the grid clear of lint or waste and thereby avoiding the running of a false thread or waste into the fabric and the production of striped or otherwise imperfect fabric when the thread breaks but the stop motion mechanism is not actuated because the openings of the grid are occupied by lint or waste.
The invention is designed more particularly for use in automatic weft replenishing looms, but it may obviously be used to advantage in looms of other descriptions for the purpose stated.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of so much of a loom as is necessary to illustrate the application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the grid, the reciprocatory grid clearer, and the means for actuating the latter incidental to the movements of the lay.
Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fi 1, looking downwardly.
imilar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The frame 1 and lay beam 2 of the loom illustrated may be and preferably are of the ordinary construction, and the grid 3 1s fixed on said lay beam in any approved manner for use in conjunction with stopmotion mechanism. This latter, however, forms no part of my invention, and I have therefore deemed it unnecessary to illustrate the same.
In furtherance of my invention I provide a grid-clearer, preferably in the form of a rake head; the said clearer being numbered 4 and provided with tangs 5 which are disposed and movable in the openings of the grid 8. Any suitable means may be employed for utilizing the movements of the lay in the actuation of the clearer 4 with out involving departure from the scope of my invention as claimed. I prefer, however, to provide the clearer 4 with a stem 6, and to guide the stem 6 in the lay beam, and provide it with an anti-friction roller 7 and a coiled spring 8 interposed between the lay beam and an abutment 9 on the stem 6 and having for its purpose to move the clearer 4 downwardly; and in order to move the clearer 4 upwardly against the action of the spring 8 during the movement of the lay beam toward the portion of the loom frame back of said beam, I provide the stationary cam 10 which is in the form of an inclined rail, suitably fixed in the loom frame 1, as shown. The said cam 10 is positioned for the support and travel of the roller 7, as appears in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the practical operation of my novel mechanism, it will be manifest that on the movement of the lay toward the loom portion back of the lay, the clearer 4 will be raised and the tangs 5 thereof will traverse the grid openings in an upward direction, while on the movement of the lay in the opposite direction, the spring 8 moves the clearer 4 downwardly so that the tangs 5 of the clearer move in the grid openings toward the lower ends of said openings. By virtue of this the grid openings are maintained in an open state during the opera tion of the loom, for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination in a loom, of a fre,
a lay, a substantially-vertical grid on the lay, a clearer having tangs movable in the openings of the grid and also having a stem guided by the lay, and means for reciprocating the clearer substantially from the bottom to the top of the grid; said means comprising a spring for moving the clearer downwardly, and a cam carried by the frame and constructed and arranged on movement of the lay in one direction to raise the clearer against the action of said spring.
2. The combination in a loom, of a frame,
I a lay, a substantially vertical grid on the lay,
a clearer having tangs movable in the openings of the grid and also having a stem gulded by the lay, and means for rec1proeat- Copies of this patent may be obtained for .prising' a spring, formoving ing the clearer substantially from the bottom to the top of the grid; said means comthe clearer downwardly, an anti-friction roller on the stem, and an inclined cam-rail fixed to the frame and opposed to said roller and adapt ed on inward movement of the lay' to raise the clearer.
