IMPROVEMENT lN SOAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,265, dated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURKE, of Sullivan, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a compound for hard soap, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
My compound is composed of the following ingredients: Soap, Sal-soda, unslaked lime, soft water, alum, borax, and benzine.
Take one barof firm, tough soap and cut' it in thin slices, eight ounces of sal-soda, and four ounces of unslaked lime. Put the lime and sal-soda into a dish and pour over it half a gallon of boiling soft water. Stir this well and let it settle; then pour ofi' the clear water or solution into the dish containing the soap; put it on the fire and letit remain there until the soap is all dissolved. Dissolve two ounces of alum and half an ounce of borax. Stir the soap and put in the alum and borax just as the soap is taken from the fire. Let the soap cool, and then put in half an ounce of benzine. \Vhen it gets perfectly cold, the soap is hard and can be cut in any-sized bars.
I do not confine myself to the precise proportions herein mentioned, as they may be varied to suit circumstances or the degree of hardness required. 4
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within described compound for hard soap, consisting of the ingredients substantially as set forth.
