Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1918.
Application filed larch 12, 191; Serial No. a24,122.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, Gnomes L. ScHnnL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of llinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Fluifers and Perfumers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for flufiing and perfuming hair and is the parent appl1-- cation of my co-pending divisional application, Serial No. 845,558. and the ob ect of m improvement is to provide a simple and effective means of the character mentioned. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. g
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompan ing drawing forming a part of this speci cation, and in which Fi re 1 is a side elevation of a hair drying, ufling and perfuming device incorporating my inventlon Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of the ing receptacle. looking in the direction of I the arrow in Fig. 4.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a hollow comb 6 having a chamber 7 therein extending through the back thereof. From the chamber 7 is a perforation 8 extending through each of the teeth 9 of said comb.
One end of the back of the comb 6 is closed by means of a plug 10 secured therein. In the chamber 7 is a spider 11 and in said spider 11 and plug 10 is mounted an electric heating element 12. The'wires 13 of said heating element are extended through the side of comb 6 and terminate in connecting terminals 14. The terminals 14 are adapted to be connected with any suitable source of electricity, not shown, in order to furnish electrical energy to the heating element 12.
A rubber bulb 15 is connected with the flaring end16 of the comb 6 and is adapted gated norma lymaintams the corrugated portion to force air throu h said comb. At one end of the bulb 15 is a nipple 17 internally threaded. On the inner end of nipple 17 is a flap valve 18 adapted to permit air to enter bulb 15 and revent its escaping therefrom through sai nipple.
A tubular perfume holding receptacle 19- is provided with external threads and threaded in the nipple 17. The receptacle 19 i. 1s prov1ded w1th a passa e leading therethrough and at each end 0 said passage is a screen member 20. The screen member 20 may be formed of fine wire gauze, cloth, or any other suitable substance to maintain the perfume in the receptacle. In use a number of receptacles 19 may be furnished with a device, each adapted to hold different kinds of perfume so that the user of the device may by simply unscrewing one receptacle 19 msert another thereby changing the kind of perfume used.
At the back of comb 6 adjacent the spider 11 is an car 21 to which is pivoted a fiufiing member 22. The flufling member 22 is provided with longitudinal corrugations 23 adapted to fit correspondingly formed corrugations 24 in the back of comb 6. The member 22 is also provided with a handle 25 extended toward the bulb 15 to a position so that the operator may easil operate the fiuffing member. The heating element 12, furnishes suflicient heat to cause the curling or fluffing of hair inserted between the member 22 and corruortion 24 of the comb. A spring 26 23 and corrugated portion 24 in engagement as will be readily understood.
On the side of comb 6 is secured a projectin arm 27 extending around and spaced from ulb 15. The protector 27 is provided for use in using the fluflfer or curler. operating the latter the protector 27 is engaged by the fingers while the handle 25 is engaged by the thumb of the operator. The provision of member 27 prevents pressing bulb 15 during the operation of the curler or flufi'er thereby increasing its life. and usefulness. j
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not WlSh to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination of a hollow comb with passageways in the teeth thereof and a chamber 'in communication with said passageways, heating means in said chamber, a rubber bulb arranged at one end of said chamber and provided with a valve inlet, the opposite side of said chamber from said teeth being longitudinally corrugated, a correspondingly corrugated member hingedly mounted upon said comb and cooperating with the first mentioned corrugated portion,
the last mentioned corrugated member being provided with an operating handle extending upwardly and to a point adjacent said bulb and a fixed handle member socured to the comb and extending upon the opposite side of said bulb from said operating handle whereby the bulb may be 0perated to force air through the said chamber and teeth or the corrugated portions may be operated independently Without compressing the bulb, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
