Description

J. A. DAVISON.
BULLET. APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 22| I9 I4.
Patented Jan. 1, 1918,.
I I-III',
I To a-ZZ whom it may concern:
JOHN ANDERSON navisolv, or mela in; 'rnnnrronv or ALASKA.
* I mm Be it known that I, JOHN A. DAVISON, of
Franklin, in the Territory of Alaska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bullets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a I bullet for small arms which will mushroom or expand at a point rearward of its front I I end, and preferably at or about its center, on impact with the body of an animal, a human body or any hard substance, and at the same time avoid the objection which exists as to mushrooming bullets heretofore known, namely, the insufliciency of the velocity to cause them to expand or mushroom.
In the accompanying drawings,F1 re 1 is a longitudinal section of the pre'erred form of my invention, the mushrooming effect being produced by the expansion of a I plug or cylinder and the hollowed portions .25.
l similar to Fig. 1 with the cylindrical plug of the two parts of the bullet.. Fig. 2 is omitted. Fig. 3 corresponds to Fig. 1, differing therefrom in that the nose of the bulv [let is rounded.
bodiment in various forms, and hence I do Mypresent invention is capable of emnot restrict myself to any particular construction, the fundamental idea being that M as 1 way through the object struck and thus bore a hole for the passage of the expanded or on impact the pointer forward portion of thebulle't will remain intact, free to plow its deformed portion. Upon the pointer for- Ward portion of the bullet receiving sudden check, upon impact, the resistance of a relatively weakened portion to the rear will be overcome by the inertia of the rearward part r of the bullet, causing mushrooming to occur I Kata point intermediate the two parts of the bullet. I I
According to the form of my invention shown'in Fig. 1 the front part 1 and the rear part 2 have each a centrally arranged cavity 3 extending longitudinally thereof for some distance, and in such cavities I have shown a relatively easily expansible cylindrical Specification of Letters Patent.

plug 3 which may be of any suitable metal, such as copper or amalgam, or of any vegetablesubstance such as hardwood. In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the bullet as having a pointed nose of the Spitzer type and as surrounded by a jacket 4:. This jacket may be wholly omitted or caused to only partially incase the bullet. In Fig. 2 I have omitted the cylindrical plug and depend upon the upsetting of the hollow cylindrical portions of the parts 1 and 2 to produce the mushrooming. The form shown in Fig. 3 corresponds to that indicated in Fig. 1 but diifers therefrom in that the end of the forward part 1 is rounded at its point and the inclosing casing does not extend over the point. Of course, if desired this point may be flattened, and the casinglikewise may extend over and completely cover or envelop the rounded or flattened point.
plug I obtain additional support for the parts of the bullet and thus prevent any likelihood of the bullet being deformed during its passage or transit through the rifiing of the barrel.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bullet composed of a forward part and a rearward part in end to end disposition, and a casing inclosing said parts, each of the latter having at its axial center a cavity extending from one end longitudinally thereof, the opposed open ends of the two parts being at or about the center of the bullet.
tion, and a casing inclosing said parts, each. I
of said parts having at its axial center a cav- It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,252,325, granted January 1, 1918, upon the application of John Anderson Davison, of Franklin, Territory of Alaska, for an improvement in Bullets, errors appear in the drawings requiring correction as follows: In Fig. 1, for the referenoe numerals 1 2 6 read 1, 2, 3; Fig. 2, tor the reference-numerals 1, 2, read 1, 2 Fig. 3, for the referencenumeral 1 read 1 and that the said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office. 4
Signed and sealedthis 26th day of February, A. D., 1918.
F. W. H. CLAY,
Acting Commissioner of Patents.
