IMPROVEMENT IN GIG-SADDLE HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,222, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SASSAMAN, of Hightstown, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode of At taching Gig-Saddle Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon in which Fi gnre 1 represents aperspective view, showing a slot formed in the front portion of the tree to secure the nose of the hook. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal bisection of my, improvement, showing mode of attaching saddlesea-t and gighook by means of a bolt or screw. Fig. 3 is a detail of the hook.

My invention consists in the mode of attaching metallic gig-hooks to a harness-saddle by means of a small screw passing through the stem of the hook, which is provided with a neck and base to fit into aslot and groove on the tree.
The letter A in the drawing represents a gighook, having a nose or projecting base fitting into slot b of the tree, which is also provided with a slot, 0, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to secure the hook more firmly to its position. The rear base of the gig'hook passes under the saddleseat B, and terminates immediately under the cantle. The front portion of the saddle-seat B has an oblong slat, e, fittingthe neck of the hook above the base, which serves to keep the front portion of the saddle-seat firm. The saddle-sea-tB rests upon a leathern orother suitable cushion, in order to fit the tree more closely. E is a bolt or screw inserted on the under side of the tree, having its head countersunk to prevent galling the animal, and passes through the base of the gig-hook and through the cushion into the threaded nozzle on the under part of the saddle-seat; or it may pass entirely through the saddle-seat and have a bur on the top surface of the same.
By this arrangement the gig-hook and saddle-seat are easily detached by simply releasing the bolt or screw, and another inserted, when desired, with less difficnlty than by any other method now in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The gig-hook A with neck f, when secured to a harness-saddle by means of slot 1) and c and bolt E, substantially as described.
