UNITED Tatras PATENT CFFICE.
LEWIS S. OHIOHESTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F. OHIOHESTER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN GRAIN-SCOURERS AND HULLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,171, dated April 2, 1872.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs S. Cnrcnnsrnn, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Scouring and HullingGrain, &c. 5 and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
In an application for Letters Patent heretofore made by me, ameans for sconrin g and hulling grain is set forth, the same consisting of a series of disks placed one above the other upon a revolving shaft, and each disk opposite a stationary concave abrader or scourer. In this apparatus the grain is thrown from the revolving disk, bythe centrifugal action, against the surface of the concave or abrader, and travels diagonally and upward along such surface, and falls through an opening down upon the next disk, to receive a similar scouring operation.
My present invention, as distinguished from previous devices, consists in employing a scouring-wheel, formed of a series of concentric coves placed below a series of concentric detlectors, said coves being placed either one above the other, so as to force the grain to travel upward from one cove to the next, or upon the same line, in which case the grain passes oper the top o'r edge of the cove and drops into the adjoining one. To allow the grain to pass from one cove to the next, I make use of a movable section or sections in the stationary deiiectors, said section being adjustable so as to allow the opening from one cove to the next to be adjusted as desired, and detain the grain, more or less, in its passage through the apparatus.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a vertical section of my said apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a section of a modification.
The revolving scourer a is upon the vertical shaft b, and at the lower part said shaft is sustained by abox upon the frame c, and is revolved by the belt and pulley d, or other convenient means. The scourer a, is formed of a series of concentric coves, 2 2, one above the other, as shownand the surfaces of such coves is more or less roughened bya coating of emery or other similar material, so as to scrape, polish, and scour the hulls or skins ofthe grain as the same is thrown again st said surface by the centrifugal action of the revolving scourer a. Above said scourer is the stationary deiector h, and this is formed as a series of concentric coves, 3 3, over the coves 2 2, and said coves 3 3 deflect the grain down upon the surface 2 2 as thrown upward by the centrifugal action of the scourer. The grain is supplied by the hopper z' to the central portion of the scourer a, and travels upward and diagonally over the surface of the cove 2, being deflected downward by the cove 3, and consequently receives a gyratory motion, which exposes all sides of the grain to the action of the abrading surface 2; and at 4 said grain is allowed to escape and pass to the next scouring-section, to undergo a similar scouring operation, and so on from section to section, finally passing away by the chute on to a suitable receptacle. The portion or section h of the detlector h is hinged or otherwise supported at p, so as to allow the size of the openings 4 to be varied by adjusting-screws 6, and thus detain the grain more or less in its passage through the apparatus, and subject it to the desired scouring-and-rubhing action. Two or more of these sections may be provided. Supported upon the deflector-case 71J is the blower-casing l, and upon the shaft b is a blower, t. This blower draws the air, dust, and particles of husk from the scourer and passes them away by the trunk fv.
By thisapparatus the grain will be prepared in a very thorough manner for subsequent grinding by removing the soft and outer portions and ends ot' the hulls; thereby suchportions will not remain to be mixed with the flour when ground.
I claim as my invention- 1. The revolving scourer a, formed with concentric coves 2 and a roughened surface, in combination with the stationary deflectors 3, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The section h, made adjustable, to regulate the discharge ofthe grain, in combination with the revolving scourer a, having concentric coves and a roughened surface, and the stationary deectors 3 3, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 17th day of November,
LEWIS S. CHICHESTER. Witnesses:
Gno. T. Pnvcmvnr, Guns. H. SMITH.
