To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLAN A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Receptacles for Garbage, Ashes, or the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to receptacles for garbage, ashes or other materials, and is 1n the nature of an improvement on a receptacle disclosed in my co-pending appl1- cation, Serial No. 869,731.
The objects of my invention are to provide a novel and different construction of the body, whereby the upper section thereof may be made of sheet metal, thus reducing the weight of the receptacle; to pro vide an improved construction and arrangement for more effectively releasing the outlet door, when it is desired to unlock the same to remove the contents of the receptacle; to provide an improved construction and arrangement of the treadle mechanism by which the inlet door is opened; to prov1de an improved construction and arrangement whereby both the inlet door and the outlet door are hinged on one and the same metal portion of the body structure; and to provide certain details and features of construction tendin to increase the general eificiency and desirability of a receptacle of this particular characte To the foregoing and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a receptacle for holding garbage or-ashes or other materials, embodying the principles of my invention.

As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a rectangular body A composed of molded cement, this body containing a chamber a. A sheet metal top section B is Cook county,

The top of this section slopes toward the front of the receptacle and is provided with a door 0 to cover the inlet opening 0 in the top of the receptacle. The hinges for this door consist of sheet metal, members D secured upstanding portions 03, wlth downwardly bent portions 1, which latter are adapted for connection with the l1Ilk-2 through the medium of which the door is opened. A bar3 is pivoted to the side of the section B at 4, and is provided at its lower end with a foot piece or pedal of any suitable character. Thus, when the bar 3 is operated to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the link 2 pulls forward on the portion 1 and thereby opens the door. The hinge, it will be seen, is formed by a, strap F secured to the top of the section B, and provided with upstanding end portions 7, a rod 5 being inserted through the portions d and f to form the pivot or axis of the hinge. The pivot 4 is provided with a bracket piece 6 which is secured in place by one of the bolts 6, and with this construction, and with the provision of the portions 1 at opposite sides of the cover, the bar 3 or foot lever .can be used at either side of the receptacle, as this at it is reversible and can be used with its foot-piece-E extending in either direction. The side walls of the section B, and also the front wall thereof, are slanted upwardly and toward each other, so that the feed passage G tapers upwardly from the main chamber a of the receptacle. The rear wall 7 extends only part way down to the body A, being bent outward at its lower edge to form an 0dset or shoulder 8 upon which are mounted the hinges 9 for the vertically disposed rear doorll-I, which latter closes the outlet opening T in the back of the receptacle. With this construction, of the hinges 9 is disposed a distance invertical plane of the door H, the latter tends always to press tightly against the back of the receptacle, when in closed position, inasmuch as it has a tendency to swing under the said axis. and inasmuch as the amis lltltll extends horizontally through the bottom of the body A and is provided at its rear end with a lug or lateral projection j to engage the lower edge of the door H and keep the latter closed. The front end of this rod is provided with a short lever arm K which extends upwardly through the cam slot 10 in the cam plate L WhlCh is suitably secured to the front of the body. This slot, it will be seen, is so formed that when the rod J is rotated in one direction it draws the lug 7' tightly against the door H, as shown in the drawings; but when the lever K is swung over to the other end of said slot, then the rod J is forced endwise in the opposite direction, thus shifting the lug j a distance away from the. lower edge of the door H in a manner that will be understood. In this way, when the door H is again closed, the rotation of the rod J to lock the said door willthen be started with the lug j some distance outward and'away from the-lower edge of said door, whereby there is less liability of the lug j being forced upward inside of this door, as might be the case if the door at this time were for any reason a slight distance away from the body at its lower edge. Also, a latch or catch M is pivoted at m to the top of the plate L, and provided with a lug 11 as shown in Fig. 5, to extend in front of the lever arm K, when the catch M is moved outward, thereby to hold the rod J in the position necessary for locking the door H in closed position.
Thus, it will be seen that the upper section of the body is made light and still strong by constructing the same from sheet metal, whereas the lower section is made strong and solid and sanitary by the use of molded cementitious material, such as ordinary Portland cement. The bottom 12 of the said receptacle preferably slopes gently toward the lower edge of the openlng or outlet I, so that the receptacle will be self-draining in character. All of the operative'parts, with the exception of the rod J and the plate L, are mounted on the sheet metal u per section B, and, hence, the attachment 0 this section in place serves also to bring the said operating parts into their proper positions. , receptacle is thus very much reduced in weight, and if necessary the section B with all its parts, plus the rod J and the plate L,
canbe shipped separately and then com-' bined with the cement body at the place where the receptacle is to be used.
With further reference to the construction of the body A, it will be seen that the bolts I) extend downward a distance-substantially equal to the height of said body, so that these bolts or rods serve to reinforce the cement or concrete at the corners of the body, and also at the sides and front thereof, it being observed that the lower end of each 1. having a catch for engaging said device to hold said means in looking position, and means engaging said device to cause endwise movement of said rod when the outlet door is unlocked.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a hollow body having a chamber provided with an inlet opening in the top thereof, an outlet 0 ening in the back of said body, and doors or said openings, said body including a solid molded mass of cementitious material with the chamber therein, a rod extending through the bottom of said body, external means mounted on the rear end of said rod to lock the lower edge of said outlet door, and a device for rocking said rod to control said lock, disposed at the front of said body, said body having means consisting of a cam for engaging said device to draw the rod endwise, said cam having a catch pivoted thereon to hold said device in looking position, and said cam having means to move said rod endwise in the opposite direction when said device is operated to release the outlet door.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprisin a hollow body having a chamber provide with an'inlet opening in the top thereof, an outlet opening in the back of said body, and doors for said 0 nings, said body including a solid mo ded aaaaea E5 mass of cementitious material with the chamber therein, a rod below said chamber and extending through the bottom of said body, means mounted on the external rear end of said rod to lock said outlet door, a device for rocking said rod to control said look, disposed at the front of said body, having a catch for engaging said device to hold said means in looking position, and means engaging said device to cause endwise movement of said rod when the outlet door is unlocked, said body having a sheet metal top section containing said tapered passage.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a hollow body having a chamber provided with an inlet opening in the top thereof, an outlet opening in the back of said body, and doors for said openings, said'body including a solid mo ded mass of cementitious material with the chamber therein, a rod extending through the bottom of said body, external means mounted on the rear end of-said rod to lock the lower edge of said outlet door, and a device for rocking said rod to control said lock, disposed at the front of said body, said body having means consisting of a cam for engaging said device to draw the rod end- W188, said cam havin a catch pivoted thereon to hold said device in looking position, and said cam having means to move said rod endWise in the opposite direction when said device is operated to release the outlet door, said body having a metal top section containing said tapered passage and to which both of said doors are hinged.

A receptacle for arbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a ho y having a chamber provided with an upper inlet and a lower outlet, said body belng extended upward a distance above said outlet to elevate said inlet a distance above the ground, the portion of said chamber above said outlet tapering upward to said inlet, thereby to prevent clogging of the materials in the top of said chamber, and said outlet being at the back of the receptacle andlarger than said inlet and said body comprising a lower section of cementitious material and an upper section of metal containing said tapered portion of the chamber, said body having a sheet metal top section to which both of said doors are hinged.
7, A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprlsing a body having an upper opening, a hinged door for said opening, a foot-operated mechanism to open said door, and means on said door and body to permit use of said mechanism at either side of the receptacle, said mechanism including a footlever which is reversible for use at either side of the body.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a body having a rear door, a rod extending from front to rear of said body, means on the rear end of said rod to engage the lower edge portion of said door, a device at the front of said body to rotate the rod, andmeans engaging said device to forcibly shift said rod endwise in both directions.

Areceptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a lower body section of molded cementitious material, an upper body section of metal, means to secure said metal section to the top of said lower section, said metal section having an inlet opening, said lower section having a rear outlet, a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said inlet, and a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said outlet.
10. A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a lower body section .of molded body section of metal, means to secure said metal section to the top of said lower section, said metal section having an inlet opening, said lower section having a rear outlet, a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said inlet, and a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said outlet, said upper body section having a rear offset for the hinges of said outlet door, thereby to insure tight closing of the latter by its tendency to swing under said offset.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a lower body section of molded cementitious material, an upper body section of metal, means to secure said metal section to the top of said lower section, said metal section having an inlet opening, said lower section having a rear outlet, at door hinged on said upper section to normally close said inlet, and a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said outlet, and a foot-operated mechanism mounted on said upper section to open said inlet door.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a lower body section of molded cementitious material, an upper body section of metal, means to secure said metal section to the top of said lower section, said metal section having an inlet opening, said lower section having a rear outlet, a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said inlet, and a door hinged on. said upper section to normally close said outlet, said upper section being constructed from sheet metal and having a bottom flange that rests on the lower section, and the sides and front of said upper section being inclined inward to upwardly taper the interior chamber thereof.

A receptacle for garbage, ashes or refuse, comprising a lower body section of molded cementitious material, an upper body section of metal, means to secure sald metal section to the top of said lower section, said cementitious material, an upper metal section having an inlet opening, said lower section having a rear outlet, a door hinged on said upper section to normally close said inlet, and a door hinged on said 5 upper section to normally close said outlet, said means comprising rods extending downward through t e lower edge portions of the said upper section, each rod being of a length to extend practlcally from top to bottom of the lower section. 10 Signed by me at Chicago, Illinois, this 13th day of December, 1915.
