Description

P KRA KAUER. SPRING PAD AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.-
APPLlATION FILE D JULY 14.1911- Patented Nov. 27, 1917.
anwnto'b Phillip Krakauer $15-$44? 630cm"; I
Tb dll' wli'o m it may concern:
Be it known that I; PHILLIP KRAKAUER, a
citizen of tlie'United States, and resident of th'ejcity 'of New York, in the county of Kings and state New York, have. invented certain :i1e'.v\ "l" 'and useful Im rovements in S ri n'gEPads and Methods 0 Making Same, 'oii yhIch the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in spring pads, such, as seats, cushions, mattresses and the like, and is especially 83)- plicable to spring units for s ring pa s, and the method for making sai units.
One. of the objects of this invention is the provision of a' rapidly constructible s' ri'ililg pocket by means of' which each 0 springs in the pad is completely inclosed,
and. the final. closure of which may be accomplished manually.
I Afurther object of this invention is the provisiono f a rapid and inexpensive method for producing sald spring pockets.
A further object. of thls invention is the I: provision ofa. cheap, durable and easily 'n' t nct. d p i wi l, indep n fl .further object of this invention is the provision of a spring poclret in which the springcan be compressed a predetermined amount and sion. I a To attain these objects, I employ the positively-held against expanmethod' described hereinafter and the depockets.
vices shown in their preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure '1, ,,1$ a perspective View partly Broken away,'ofa cushion in whichmy improved spring unit is used, showing one way of arranging the various 5 ring units.
Fi 2 is 'a plan view 0 "the blank from whic the pockets are made. r p Figs. 3 and 4 are front views of the finished ockets before'the lknots' are formed and 1g. .5 is a front view go'f a complete spring unit.
Fi'. 6 is a lanview of the strip from whic it ap ears after the strip. has been in he f and seamed and showing the lines along which the cuts are made to form the In the practical embodiment; of my invention, my improved spring umtcom'prises the usual coil spring 7 mclosed ina flexible casing as 'l or'll preferably of textile ma- Specification of Letters Patent.

terial. The method of making said casing is as follows:
Blank 14, which is preferably a long rectan lar' strip of-cloth, is folded longitudin'al y along its middle line 8 and seemed alongthe edge by seam 2. Transverse cuts 13ers then made cutting strip 14 into rect'angular strips seamed onone side, V-cuts 12 meeting at the center bein made to separate the cut strips into 'pociets 1 and 11, said V-cuts forming two triangular notches and two triangular projections at one end of each pocket. Seams 3 at the straight end of each pocket forms a casing closed on three sides.
It is obvious that the order of o eration may be changed to some extent wit out departing from the scope of my invention.
or instance, seams 3 may be made adjacent to each other (Fig. 6) before cuts 12 M13,

are madein the seamed and folded strip; 1.
or cuts 12 may be madebefore cuts 13, or
said cuts may be made alternately, as.
sired.
from casing 1 only'in having side seam :,2
It is also obvious that casing 11 differs reach up to bottom 6 of cut 12, instead of extremity 4 of cut 12, (Figs, 3 and 4) and; that the said casings 1-- and 11 are otherwise identical and are knotted in exactly the same manner.
To complete the spring unit and to form the closure at the unseamed end of pocket-j;
1 or 11', a spring 7 is inserted into said pocket, and extremities 4 are brought, to- 'gether over the top of said spring and tied together into a single knot as tightly as pos-" sible thereby compressing spring 7- to J a point where the extremities 4 engage at the ottom of cuts 12, in which case the knot can be tied no tighter, and the second or securing knot is made. "The bottom 6 of the notched end of the casin being cut; down to a predetermined depth, ot 5, when tied will be .formed at 6, and the ring wi therefore compressed the pr' etermined fill-10111117? The o'cket thus formed completely incloses e spring onall sides and prevents expansion of the spring to a length ater than that'of the ocket, no mater-i whatever being waste in the formation 'ofsaid pockets; 1 The method of forming the closure at the "end is rapidly and n 40 i-ndepen ent sprin eration of seaming the bulky and unha unit after the spring is'inserted;
The usual cfismg 9 may be provided for cheaply done and avoidsth'e expensive 05')- 6 inclosing ajseries ofoomplete 'individual units "to form a spring pad. Derangemerit of the units in easing 9 may be pre-. vented by an of the usual means such as 'loose lines 0 thread, not'slioirn, for con- 10 neeting the units without destroying their independence. p
It is obviousthat since the units are completelyinolosed and equally strong at both 4, ends the knotted end ofthe unit ,may be 16 placed at the top or bottom of'the-pad as desired. What I claim is} v 1 1 An individual spring unit independent of'si 'njla'r units comprising, a coiled spring 2 and ej 'poeketofjtxtile ma'terial, independent of 'si,rni lar pocketsrseamed at one end and one side and knotted atthe other end for in'closi iig saidspring p p 2.'
