Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nev. 2th 191 *1T Application tiled January 5, 1917. Serial No. 140,713.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Josnrn A. Nonne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of NewYork, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have. invented a new and improved BOX Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The invention vrelates to glass show cases, display boXes and similar constructions in which glass plates are fastened to metallic members such as posts, frames and the like. The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boX construction arranged to permit of securely fastening the parts constituting the article together without requiring drilling of holes in the glass plates, posts or other parts, at the same time dispensing with mechanical fastening means such as clamps, screws and the like.
In order to accomplish'the desired result, use is made of a uniting member, comprising a metallic strip and a piece of fabric inaterial, the metallic strip having a portion over which thepiece of fabric material is stretched eXteriorly, and the .said metallic strip having at its sides integral clamping members between which the sides of the piece of fabric are clamped.
i A practical embodiment ofthe invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of box construction provided with the improvement;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the uniting member prior to being bent into frame shape;
Fig. 1 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the frame shaped uniting member;
Fig. 5 is aV perspective view of the uniting member used for connecting adjacent glass plates at a corner;
Fig. 6 is a sectional perspective view of a uniting strip provided with additional fastening means for the felt.
The boX construction illustrated in Fig. 1 consists of glass side plates 10, a glass top plate 11 and a uniting member 12 for unit en ing the glass side plates 10 with the glass top plate 11. r1`he uniting member 12 comprises a strip of sheet metal 13 made U shape in cross section and terminating at its side members in integral return bent clamping members 1i. A piece of fabric, such as felt or the` like, is stretched exteriorly over the metallic strip 13 and its sides are clamped against the sido of the strip 13 by the integral clamping members 14 so as to securely lioldtlie piece of fabric stretched in position on the metallic strip 13, at the same time having a portion of this piece of textile fabric exposed, and fastened by glue, cement or other similar binding substance 16 to the under surface of the top glass plate 11. By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that the upper portion of the glass Vside plate 10 lits into the metallic strip 13 thus providing a firm connection between the side plates 10 and the top plate 11. 1n practice, the uniting member is made in one continuous strip and bent into rectangular form to provide a single uniting member for the four side plates 1() of an ordinary box construction, and to which the tog member 11 is fastened by the adhesive substance 16 applied to the exposed portion of the fabric material 15. The vertical glass plates 10 are connected with each other at adjacent sides by the use of uniting or joining members 2() each consisting of a metallic strip 21 and a piece of fabric material 22 such as felt or the like, and the metallic strip 21 is angle shape in cross section and is provided with inward return bent members 23 terminating in outwardly return bent flanges 24, and the piece of fabric material 22 is stretched exlteriorly over the metallic strip 21 and its sides are clamped between the corresponding members 23 and 2e so as to securely hold the piece of fabricmaterial 22 in stretched position and eXteriorly on the metallic strip 21. Adhesive material 25 is applied to the. exposed'portion of the piece of fabric material 22 and this adhesive material engages the inner faces of the side glass plates 10 to securely fasten the same together at their adjacent sides.
Although the side edges of the strip of fabric material are clamped securely in vplace by the clamping members of the metallic strip of the uniting members 12 or the uniting member 20, additional fasten ing means may be employed; for instance, the clamping members may be provided lill@ with struck-up lugs or bosses 30 penetrating the side edges of the fabric material, as shown in Fig. 6.
It is understood that I do not limit myself to the particular form of the uniting members 12 and :20 shown in the drawings and described above, as the same may be varied according to the use of the uniting members in any particular box construction, it being understood that the shape is governed according to the angular posi-- tions and shapes of the glass plates or other parts to be united.
It is further understood that in the manufacture of the uniting members they are made in long straight pieces which are cut up to the lengths required at the corners or joints or bent into frame shape to suit the requirements of the box construction. in hand at the time. In forming a frame shape uniting member a straight piece of the desired length has V-shaped portions of one side cut out (seeV Fig. 3) and then this piece is bent at the cut-out portions to form a rectangular uniting frame member 12 (see Figs. 1 and 4). The terminals of the strip forming the frame member 12 are soldered or otherwise fastened together.
By the use of the felt on the uniting members 12 and 2O a cushioning effect is had between adjacent glass plates. It will also be noticed that the glass plates need not be provided with holes for engagement by screws, clamps and other fastening devices now used for fastening the members of a box construction together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent zw 1. Asian article of manufacture, a uniting member for use in box constructions, comprising a piece of fabric material and a metallic strip, the latter having a portion over which the piece of 'fabric material is stretched exteriorly, and the said metallic strip having at its sides integral clamping members between which the sides of the piece of fabric are clamped.
2. As an article of manufacture, `a uniting member for use in box constructions, comprising a piece of fabric material and a metallic strip on which the said fabric is held exteriorly in stretched condition to provide an exposed fabric attaching means for fastening Va box member thereto by the use of a. binding substance, the said metallic strip having on both sides doubled up clamping members to receive the sides'of the said fabric piece between them, to clamp the fabric sides in place, and to hold the piece of fabric in stretched exposed position on the metallic strip.
3. In a box construction',` the combination with glass plates and uniting members for fastening the glass plates in position,`each of the said uniting members comprising a piece of a fabricmaterial and a metallic strip on which vthe said fabric is held stretched, and I,1J-'portionexposed, the metallic. strip having integral Vclamping members at the sides in which the fabric sidesV are clamped, and Uan adhesive substance uniting the said-exposed portion of the" fabricmaterial Ywith a face of a glass plate.
4. In a box construction, the combination with glass plates Vand uniting members-for fastening the glass platesin position, each of the said uniting members comprising piece of' a fabric material and a Ymetallic strip on which vthe. said fabric is stretched and a portion exposedythe metallic strip having integral clamping members 'at the sides in which the fabric sides are clamped,
and an adhesive substanceuniting the Vsaid exposed portion of the fabric rmaterial with. a face of a glass plate, the said`strip'hav-` ing integral angular portions forming al groove forthe reception ofthe edg'eof a glass plate. v J NONES.y
