To all Iwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LOTHAR R. ZIFFERER, :i citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgewood, county of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an. improved receptacle for garbage, refuse, waste, etc., and is concerned particularly with the means by which its cover may be operated and by which the interior of the receptacle is disinfected.
In the present receptacle I have sought to provide a simple and eii'ective means for removing the cover preparatory to a deposit of garbage or other refuse within the re# ceptacle; a frame in which the receptacle may be conveniently supported, and from which it may be readily removed, when desired: means secured to the cover for causing the dii'usion of a disinfecting agent within the receptacle with each deposit of garbage or refuse therein; and a lock lto prevent animals from gaining access to the interior of the receptacle. The invention consists also in numerous other features of construction and combinations of parts, las will more clearly hereinafter appear.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view in crosssection showing the disinfecting chamber secured to the under side of the cover.
The resent invention may be regarded as consisting of two principal elements: (1) The receptacle proper, which I have designated as 6, and (2) the frame 7 in which the receptacle may be conveniently mounted. It should be noted, however, that the receptacle may be used either independently of the frame, or in conjunction therewith, according as may be desired. The receptacle is preferably cylindrical in form, having a hook (see Fig. l.) When the bail is swung down upon the forward side of the receptacle, the hook ends 15 are brought into position to engage with 4pins 16, projecting from opposite sides of the cover 10. Each of the pins 16 is provided, furthermore,
with a head 17, so that the hooks may not be accidentally disengaged from the pins 16. The hooks 15 formed at the bail ends are thus seen to cooperate with the pins 16 to form a lock for the cover when the bail is swung to the forward side of the receptacle. Whenever there is no desire to make use of this lock, the bail may be swung toward the rear side of the receptacle, in which osition the hooked ends 15 are removed rom engaging position with the ins 16, so that no inter erence is thereby o ered to removal of the cover.
Centrally upon the under side of the cover I have arranged a chamber 18 for the reception of a disinfecting agent, the bottom of this chamber being preferably perforated (see Fig. 5.) An opening is provided throu h the cover immediately above this cham r, a spout 20. upstandin from this opening, and a cap 21 being itte onto the spout. A disinfecting agent, in powder form for example, may be placed within the chamber 18, and each time the cover is replaced after depositing refuse in the receptacle, a slight amount of the disinfectant will be shaken through the perforated bottom 19 and come into contact with the receptacle contents to exert thereon a deodorizing or neutralizing action.
The receptacle frame 7, best shown in Fig. 3, consists of a plurality of upright supports 22, the lower ends 23 of which are shaped yto provide legs for the frame. Circular bands 24 and 25 are secured respectively to the upper and lower portions of the supports 22. Additionally, between the forllLO ward and rearward pairs of legs 23 trans- l verse braces 26 and 27 re ectively are arranged, and also across the and from its front to its rear side a reinforcin brace 28 is secured. ,An upright brace 29 1s also arranged upon the rear end of the frame, its upper end 30 serving as a pivotal support for a leaf member 31,'which will presently be described. To the central portion of the brace 26 a link 32 is pivoted, its forward end projecting out and terminatin in a pedal 33. A second link 34 is similar y pivoted to the brace 27, bein likewise pivoted as at 35 to the rear end of the link 32. The pivotal connections of these links 32 and 34 with the braces 26 and 27 are suHiciently loose to permit of the links swinging freely in a vertical direction to the extent necessary for operating the cover.

Secured to therear end of the link 34 is a vertically extending connecting rod 36, which at its upper end is pivotally connected with the rear extremity of the leaf member 31 which, as shown, is pivoted intermediate of its ends to the brace 29. This leaf member may consist of a single piece of spring material bent to provide upper and lower companion sections 37 and 38 respectively, in both of which are formed registering slots 39. The section 37 may, furthermore, be provided with crimps 40 in the region of its slot 39. 'llhe leaf member is arranged to,
coperate with a guide 41 attached to the receptacle cover, and having upstandin walls or anges 42 between which the lea member may be secured. A locking pin 43 is revolubly secured to the guide 41, and when properly turned may be enteredl through the slots 39 in the leaf member. After being so passed through these slots, this pin can thenbe given a quarter turn,l whereupon its head 44 will depress the section 37 and find rest within one of the crimps 40. ln this position the head of the locking pin will be disposed transversely of the slots 39, so as to establish a secure connection between the leaf member and the receptacle cover.
Two members 46, each of which is formed with a slot as at 47, are carried by the band 24 to provide bearings in which the trunnions 11 may rest. These'members are not intended to support the weight of the receptacle which normally is carried upon the braces 26, 27 and 28, but serve rather to lock the receptacle in proper rotative position relative to the frame to insure alinement of the cover operating parts.
In order to raise the lid to an upri ht position, it is neceary merely to app y foot pressure to the pedal 33 which normally remains in the position shown in Fig. 1. Pressure upon this pedal causes the links 32 and 34 to be tilted, and the connecting rod 36 to be moved downwardly, whereupon the rear naanoo@ end of the leaf member H31 is drawn down, andiits forward end secured to the cover is raised up. Under such circumstances the cover and its o erating mechanism would occupy substantially the positions indicated by the dotted lines inFig. 1. I prefer that the cover should not swing upwardly past its center of gravity, so that it may of its own accord swing back into closed position when the operator has released his ypressure upon the pedal. lt is manifest that with each operation of the cover the contents ofthe disinfecting chamber will be shaken suficiently to cause a small portion thereof to spill into the can. By this means the receptacle will be disinfected with each deposit therein of new matter.
From the foregoin description it will be seen that the receptac e of my invention may be very conveniently operated. The parts, moreover, may readily be disassembled, and the receptacle proper be removed for purposes of cleansing or otherwise. rlhe operatin mechanism, moreover, is not only simple, ut is so arranged as to readily connect with the cover, or be disconnectible therefrom,as required.

1. ln combination, a receptacle, a cover for the receptacle, a frame within which the receptacle may be removably mounted, and cover operating means carried by the frame, consisting of a pair of loosely connected `links pivoted to the lower portion of the frame and to each other, each link being extended horizontall beyond the frame, a leaf member pivote intermediate its ends to the upper portion of the frame, one end of the leaf member being detachably secured to the cover and the other end being exltended horizontally beyond thevframe, and
a rod pivotally connectedat one end to the extended portion of the leaf member and at the other end to the extended portion of one of the links, whereby the cover is caused to swing upwardly when downward pressure is applied to the extended portion of the other link, substantially as described.

3. 1n combination, a receptacle, a cover for the receptacle, a frame within which the receptacle may be removably mounted, means carried by the frame for raising the cover, and a connection between the cover raising means and the cover, consisting of a slotted leaf member pivoted to the frame, a member upon the cover with whichA the leaf member may coperate, and a locking device carried by the cover, arranged to secure the leaf member against longitudinal and lateral movement with respect thereto, said locking member being adapted to release the leaf member 4when desired, whereby the cover may be removed from the cover raising means, substantially as described.
4. In combination, a receptacle, a cover for the receptacle, a frame within which the receptacle may be removably mounted, means carried by the frame for ralsing the cover detachably connected thereto, whereby the receptacle and cover may be removed from the frame, and trunnions extended from the receptacle bod on opposite sides thereof, to which the en s of a bail may be pivotally secured, the frame being provided with slots within which the trlmnions may lie to secure the receptacle in a fixed position relative to the frame and operatively with respect to the cover raising means, substantially as de. scribed.
5. In combination, a receptacle, a cover for the receptacle, a frame within which the receptacle may be removably mounted, means carried by the frame for raising the cover, and a connection between the cover and the cover raising means, consisting of a slotted leaf member pivoted to the frame, a guide member upon the cover with which the leaf member may coperate, and a swiveled pin arranged to extend through the leaf member slot, there being a head on the pin adapted when properly manipulated to overlie the leaf member to hold the same securely upon the cover', and when manipulated to other positions to disconnect the cover from the leaf member, whereby the receptacle and cover may be removed from the frame, substantially as described.
