Be it known that I, ROBERT EDWIN REAR- DON, of the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is the specification. Y

This invention relates to improvements in strainers such for example as are used in sinks, and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple form of strainer which after using may be thrown away, may be'manufactured in large quantities at low cost and which may be packed in a small space when not used. More specific objects of the invention are to enable the strainerl to be formed of a single fiat blank of paper or like material, and to be so folded that it may support itself in position. for use, and it consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.

In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.

The strainer is formed of paper, pulp or similar material, it may in fact be formed of any material capable of being folded into shape and whose value is such that it may be thrown away after a single use.

The strainer comprises a body portion 10 which forms the bottom of the strainer having two tabs 11 and 12 adapted to be folded upwardly, and ends 13 and 14 also adapted to be folded upwardly. The ends and sides are adapted to interlock to form a receptacle above the body portion 10, said ends having a slight inclinationtoward the body portion.

To effect the interlocking of the sides andA ends, tabs 15 are provided on the ends having slots 16 to receive tongues 17 on the sides. The outer portions 18 and 19 of the sides are adapted to be folded downwardly along lines of fold 20 and 21, their lower edges beingadapted to rest on a suitable base as for instance the sink, and support...)r

the strainer, they are splayed outwardly somewhat, from the portions 13 and 14 tov thereby form a better base, and they are also somewhat wider than the portions 13 and 14 in order that they will support the bottom portion 10 a distance above the base of the sink or other place in which they are placed.

The portions 18 and 19 are formed on the sides with tabs 22, 23, 24, 25, the tabs 23 and 24 being adapted to interlock and the tabs 22 and 25 being adaptedto interlock, said tabs folding over the endsll and 12 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the interlocking being accomplishedin any convenient way, as by the tongues 26 and 27 adapted to interlock in the respective slots 28 and 29.

The greater part of the-body portion 10 l and the inner side portions 13 and 14 are uniformly perforated, and the bottom edges of the portions 18 and 19 are serrated so that itwill form no obstruction to the material flowing through the strainer.

To reinforce the portions 18 and 19 which form the outer sides of the strainer when completely folded, reinforcing tabs 30 and 30 are formed on the bottom portion adapted to be folded inwardly flat against the inner side of the portions 18 and 19 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

The strainer may be formed of plain material as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, or of crimped material as shown in Fig. 4, the crimped material in some instances allowing the device to be made of lighter material by the fluting giving strength to the same.

That I claim as my invention is:

1. A self-contained paper garbage container and sink strainer, comprising a perforated body portion having upwardly folds able sides and upwardly foldable ends, said sides having downwardly turned portions provided with longitudinal extensions thereon, said extensions adapted to be folded inwardly and engage each other, said downturned portions and extensions forming continuous outer supporting walls for the perforated body portion, substantially as described.

2. A foldable paper strainer comprislng a body portion having upwardly foldable sides with tongues thereon, upwardly foldable ends having tabs, with slots adapted to in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
