WATER-HEATER.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2o, 1&1 7.
Application filed May 17', 1915. Serial No. 28,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKYK. BERR'I', a citizen of the United States of America, 'residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein. to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of the-invention to obtain a simple and inexpensive construction of water heater, which may be used as a subto quickly generate the necessary heat.
With my improvement I employ a relatively small heating coil, and with the consumption of almoderate amount of gas I am enabled to heat the water as required, controlling the heat from the point of consump- 80 tion,
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a diagram, showing my improved heater and the control mechanism therefor: and
Fig. 2 is a section through the controlling valve.
A is the heater, which is provided with a coil B connected with the water system and leading to a tap C. D is the gas burner for 40' heating the coil A, and E is the gas'supply pipe controlled by a-valve F. F is a pilot light supplied with gas from the conduit be low the valve and having its discharge end arranged in proximity to the gas burner for lighting the same.
In place of controlling-the valve F by the faucet or tap C, I arrange in convenient proximity thereto an operating handle (i for actuating a flexible pulley connection H. I
65 that Whenever the pulley of the connection -olen cutting oil of the supply and will there- 11' is released the valve will close, but by operating the handle G opened.
With the construction as described in use, whenever-the operator wishes a supply of hot water, it is only necessary to move their handle G from'its normal position to a position Where it exerts a pull upon the connection H. This will open the'valve F, permitting a supply of gas to the burner D, which is automatically lighted from the;
the valve mayb6 pilot F The burner D is of annular form and is so constructed that the flame therefrom'willenvelop the coils, quickly eleva't-- ing the temperature of the water contained therein, after which the tap C may be opened and the hot water drawn oflt. It is also. possible to open the gas and water valves differentially, so that the temperature of the discharged water may be varied as desired.
In case of thebreakage of the control handle G or connection H, the spring K will automatically close the valve, thereby avoiding Waste of the fuel.
Any suitable construction of'the'valve 'F may be employed, but I prefer that of a slida-ble gate L having the spring K sleeved upon the stem J thereof, so that the direct pull of the connection. H will be exerted upon the valve and thedirect pressure of the spring will return the same. The gate in closing enters a pocket L in the casing, in which a small quantity. of gas is trapped, and a vent passage M connecting this pocket with the outlet permits of the displacement M) of said trapped gas. This constructon is useful in preventing the popping out of the burner or the slight explosion occurring When the gas is suddenly cut of? and which might result in the blowing out of the pilot light. The gas which is trapped in the I pocket and slowly expelled therefrom through the passage M Will prevent the sudby avoid the explosion. I
What I claim as my invention is 1. Ina Water heater, the combination witha heating coil, a tap located at a remote point therefrom and a connectionbetween, said coil and tap, of a gas burner, a valve for ontrolling the supply of gas to said burner, comprising a gate longitudinally movable .from closed to open position, a spring for normally clos 1g said gate, a casing having a pocket intwhich said gate is Copies of this patent may be obtained for said urner, means for actuating said valve from a point adjacent said tap, said valve 15 havinga pocket in which gas is trapped in the closed position of t he valve, and having a vent from said pocket to said gas outlet passage.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
