Be it known that I, HANS VON WOLFORS- Dom", a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Feeder forGrinding- Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide mechanical means for forcibly feeding material into a grinding machine. Heretofore it has been customary to force the material into meat grinding machines by hand and this has always been accompanied with great danger of the hand becoming injured by coming in contact with the grinding mechanism. This invention is intended to overcome said difficulty and make hand feeding unnecessary and yet accomplish the feeding by mechanical means which will not interfere with the operation of the grinding ma chine in any particular.
One feature of the invention consists in providing a feeding block which is adapted to enter the hopper or throat of the machine, and a lever or other mechanism for forcing downward said feeding block and thereby forcing the material into the machine, which device may be removably secured to the hopper. Since the hopper or throat of the grinding machine is usually circular, the feeding block is likewise circular, and since the grinding mechanism in the machine is circular, the inner end of the feeding block is made concave transversely of the machine, but straight longitudinally of the machine.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
Figure 1 is a central vertical cross section through the hopper and detachable means with the feeder in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the detachable means shown in Fig. 1.
There is shown herein a grinding machine of well known type having a cylinder 10 with a hopper or throat 11 at one end thereof through which the material is fed through the machine.

The material is fed into the machine forcibly by a feeding block 15 which is cylindrical to conform to the cylindrical form of the throat or hopper and the inner end is concave transversely of the machine, but is straight longitudinally of the machine. An arm 116 extends centrally from the feeding block 15 and by means of a pin 16 is pivoted in one of the holes 17 of a hand lever 18. Said hand lever is fulcrumed at one end by a pin 19 to ears 26 secured to the detachable means. The hand lever, therefore, when in its lower position, extends across the hopper, when the block is lowered, which enables one to feed the material to the grinder with considerable force. When the feeding block is withdrawn and the hand lever forced upward and back, the latter will be limited in its movement by a spring 21 which is a flat spring extending up behind the lever.
This enables the material to be forced in with considerable power and the feeding block will not touch the grinder because of the concave form of the inner end of the block. Since the block is pivoted to the handle, as the handle is lowered, the block will automatically enter the throat of the machine without ever catching therein. By having a number of holes 17 in the handle, the block can be pivoted at the right point in the handle to cause the proper entrance and withdrawal thereof from the throat of the machine. Since the lower end of the block is concave transversely of the grinder, it will force the material down so that the thickness of the layer of material above the grinder will be substantially uniform at all points which is an important feature of the invention.
The detachable means which is the main feature of this invention for attaching the feeding device to grinding machines previously made, consists of a frame 25 on which the upwardly extending ears 26 to which the handle is fulcrumed are secured and an inwardly curved extension 27 that rests upon the inner surface of the hopper and an out-, ward downwardly extended portion 28 which. projects outside of the hopper and below the top thereof and carries a set screw 29 whereby it is secured to the hopper.
