To aZZccLom itmay concern: .Y YBeit known that I,.MoRR1s LowY',-a Vcitizen ofthe United States, and aresident of thev cityrofV New York, in the countyof 'New York and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and usefulImprovements4 in Folding Cots,l of which the followingfis a speciiication.
`Thej'presentinvention relates to folding cots-and is divided out of myapplicat'ion fory U. Letters Patent, filed Aug. 13, 1915, under Serial No. 45,334.
,One of the objects of .Y the invention'is to simplify the construction of devices of this kind by providing a structurev whichis light, durable, simple, inexpensive to manufacture, and which can be v readily so folded that it will occupy 'a small space. y n A v Another .object of the invention isfitoA produce'a folding cot comprising" a. y"iairof foldable Vsections Vwhich are united. by a shortmiddle section, each' of said sections having ya pair of'legs whichare so connected by'si-mple means that by one movement both foldable sections aswell' as' the legs may be folded 4into a'compact upright structure, or opened in readiness for use, andwhen open the cotfwill be maintained in itsvpo'sfition against premature closure. nach of the' frime Sections 1.1 :am ici-fis Asupported,by a pair of 1egs25, whichare l provided with casters 26 for the kWell-Imen Y purpose. Each pair of legs is braced by a plurality of tie-rods, in the present case by two rods, Adenoted by the numerals 27 and 28. These rods eXtend horizontally and transversely of the cot, those denoted by the numeral 27 being disposed near the upper ends of the legs and those indicated at 2S One pair of legs'is" near their lower ends. pivoted at 29 to the side rails 13, and the other pair at 30 to the side rails 15. IThe middle section is also supported by a pair of legs, indicated at 31, these legs being fiXedly attached to the bracket-like structures 19. Upon the cross-rod or bracev 20 is mounted a downwardly extending bar 32, having -two lugs 32, to which are pivoted at 33 links 34, the other ends of which are fulcrumed at 35 to the tie-rods 28. These links extend in the longitudinal aXis of the cot, each of the same connecting one pair of outer legs with the middle legs 31 of the cot. Upon the bar 32 is slidably mounted below the lugs 32 a sleeve 36, which is connected with the linksv 34. More particularly, it is connected with each link 34 by a short link 37, that is pivoted at 38 and 39 to the sleeve 36 and to the link 34, respect-ively. The purpose of this arrangement will be described hereinafter.
The cot is provided with end pieces, that is to say, with a headand foot-piece, so as to give it the appearance of a normal bedstead. These end pieces are denoted by the nume-ral 40, and comprise each a bail-shaped frame, the lower ends of which are pivoted at 41 to standards 42, which are carried by the foldable sections of the top frame. A transverse tie-rod 43 connects the vertical portions of each end piece, and to this tierod is liXedly attached a lever 44, said lever extending below the respective end rail of the top frame section and being pivoted at 45 to a lever 46, which is oscillatably mounted upon the tie-rod 27 of the respective pair of legs.
The operation of this device is as follows: In order to fold the cot, the operator takes hold of the top frame sections 11 and 12, and moves the central portions of the same upward, swinging them around the pivots 18, which results, due to the connections between the outer legs and the middle legs, in swinging the outer legs around the pivots 29 and 30.y until the said legs abut against the respective side rails, and the said side rails are brought into parallel relation to each other into the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. At the same time it is to be observed that as the legs 25 are moved into the positions indicated, the levers 44 and 46 shift the end pieces 40 around their pivots 41, until they are brought into substantially parallel relation to the side rails. If desired, an upholstered mattress and the bed clothing can also be folded with the frame.
As the cot is being folded, the connections between the links 34 and the sleeve 3G will cause the middle section to remain during the folding operation in vertical position, thereby greatly facilitating the folding op- Veration.
The short intermediate section 17 maintains the two folding sections of the cot suitably spaced, to provide a proper place for the legs and links when the structure is folded. Inasmuch as the inner ends of the side rails of the two folding sections rest upon the lugs 21, and the latter are properly supported by the middle legsl 31, the said lugs will act as. stops when the cot is in its extended position, and thus prevent the cot sections from moving out of alinement under weight. The intermediate section thus not only serves to maintain the two folding sections of the cot suitably spaced, but, by reason of the lugs formed thereon, it acts as a stop to maintain the frame sections in alinement. y
In order'to keep the cot in its closedl position, a catch may be made use of. The catch illustrated in the drawing' is made in the form of a leaf-spring 47, which is attached in any suitable manner to thevertical flange of one of the end rails of the top frame, and provided near its outer free end with an aperture 48, in which isadapted to, be seated a stud 49, the latterl being carried by the end rail of the other section of the top frame. rIhe free end of the spring is curved and eX- tends beyond the respective end rail, when the cot is in its closed position. In folding the cot, the stud will be automatically seated in the aperture of the spring by reason of the free end of the latter being curved. In order to disengage the spring from the stud, the operator 4steps on the projecting end of the spring, after which the cot can be opened for use.
What I claim is:
1. In a` folding cot comprising a pair of foldable cot sections, a short middle section pivotally connected to the inner ends thereof, said foldable cot sections folding transversely of the cot by lifting such inner ends and thereby allowing the outer ends to drop and close toward each other, and a pair of legs pivoted to each of said foldable sections, the combination of a pair of legs attached to said middle section, a downwardly eX- tending bar centrally arranged upon said middle section, and a link connecting the legs of each foldable section with said bar.
2. In a folding cot comprising a pair of foldable cot sections, a short middle section pivotally connected to the inner ends thereof, said foldable cot sections folding transversely of the cot by liftingvsuch inner ends andthereby allowing the outer ends to drop Amiddle section, a link connecting the legs of means for maintaining the legs of said middle section in vertical position during 10 the folding operation.
Signed atNew York, inthe county of New York, and State of New York, this 23rd day of Aug., D. 1916.
