Description

INVENTOR Tam? C. flllen,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JANE C. ALLEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SANITARY BELT AND BANDAGE.
Application filed January 29, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JANE G. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Belts and Bandages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in belts and suspensory bandages and supporters connected therewith.
It consists in a novel formation of the supporting band and in the arrangement and connection of the elastic tapes between the band and the belt.
It also includes details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the application of the device.
Fig. 2 is a view of the end of the bandage, opposite to the end of Fig. 1.
It is desirable where women especially are engaged in occupations which keep them constantly on their feet, that they should have a sanitary supporter or band to relieve them of injurious effects incident to the constant strain of standing, but in order to produce the best results, it is necessary that the band be so connected that the contacting parts will be drawn out transversely, and also the ends be so attached as to fit smoothly and without annoyance, against the body.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a band A, of sufficient length to pass between the legs and to extend a short distance up along the back and the abdomen. The band has its greatest width between the legs and the ends are contracted on curved or tapered lines and terminate in narrow rounded ends, as at 2.
3 is a belt adapted to be secured around the body of the wearer. From this belt six elastic tapes depend, two of which are attached opposite the center of the body, front and rear, as at The other four attach to the belt at each side of the hips, front and rear, as shown at 5.
The ends of these tapes are provided with safety pins or other means for attaching and may be lengthened or shortened at will. The ends of the band are at the narrowest Specification of Letters Patent.

point and above the side attachments are connected with the central tapes, so that the band is extended smoothly in the direction of its length and no annoying wrinkles or folds will be formed. The diagonal tapes 5 are attached to the curved or inclined edges of the band near the ends of the straight central portion, and by their elasticity they exercise a transverse and an upward pull which acts to extend the band smoothly and prevent its wrinkling or presenting folds which will chafe the body. The ends of the band are drawn smoothly upward above the side attachments and are thus prevented from wrinkling and chafing the body. This construction also insures a perfect fit and prevents any entrance of injurious drafts of cold air.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A bandage composed of a band having a relatively wide central part and tapered ends, the extremities of the tapered ends being rounded and the sides of the tapered ends being connected to the central part by convex edge parts, a belt, a pair of central tapes connected to the front and back of the belt, a pair of side tapes connected to the front of the belt and a pair of side tapes connected to the rear of the belt, pins adjustably connecting the central tapes to the front faces of the tapered ends so that the central tapes extend across said rounded edges so as to hold the latter against the body, and pins adjustably connecting the side tapes to the front faces of the belt at points opposite to the convex edge parts of the belt, said last named pins being arranged at an incline to the longitudinal axis of the belt and substantially parallel to the convex edges, and the tapes extending across the convex edges so as to cause same to conformably and closely engage the adjacent parts of the body and to exert an upward and outward pull on the wide central part of the belt.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JANE C. ALLEN.
