LOG-TURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 4, 1917. Serial No. 159,832.
To all 'whom t 'may concern.'
Be it known that we, JAMES H. SAMMoNs, ARTHUR C. HEADLEY, CooLm J oHN EILAND, and Emir. KENION HEADLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Myrtlewood, in the county of Marengo and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log-Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
lt is an object of theV invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including skid knees having their outer or free ends provided with penetrating members whereby a convenient and eifective gripping action may be had with a log upon the carriage for properly turning said log.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar-A rangement of the several parts of our imiy proved log turner whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view in top plan illustrating a log turner constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the device as shown in Fig. 1 with the carriage in elevation.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, l denotes skids or log ways arranged in parallelism and which deliver upon the carriage C of a conventional type generally employed in saw mills. The discharging end portions of theskids or ways l are provided in their upper faces with the recesses 2 adapted to receive the rounded portions 3 of the elongated arm or bar 4. The portions of the arm or bar 4 intermediate the rounded portions 3 are angular in cross section and engaged with said angular portions 5 are the rocking members 6 having their outer ends rounded, as at 7, and extending outwardly from, said rounded edges 7 are the pins 8 adapted to penetrate the log in order to materially facilitate the turning operation.
One end portion of the rod or bar 4 is extended and said extended portion is provided with an operating lever 9 whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the rod or bar 4 for effecting the turning of a log. In turning a log the rod or bar 4 is so turned as to cause the outer or engaging end portions of the members 6 to move or travel upwardly. The members 6 are automatically returned or moved in an opposite direction through the medium of the retractile members lO'herein disclosed as'conventional coil springs operatively engaged with the members 6 and with the cross piece 11 connecting the ways or skids 1.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a log turner constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of i Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
the convenience and facility with which it and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise Aarrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
A log turner comprising, in combination, log ways, a rod rotatably supported by said log ways, means for rotating the rod, rocking members carried by the rod, penetrating members carried by the outer ends of the rocking members, and retractile springs engaged with the rocking members for normally maintaining the same in a lowered position.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aiiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. SAMMONS. ARTHUR C. HEADLEY. COOLIE J. EILAND. EUEL K. HEADLEY. litnesses:
W. W. HUGHES, E. A. Woons.
