Description

S. BACIK.
I STOVE LID LIFTER. APPLICATION FILED 05019. 1916.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Fig. 2.. 16'

.. sears-si an e ease o al whom? camera" I Be it known that I, STEFAN BACIK, a subjectjofsthe King fjqffl-Iungary, residing at Sykesville, in the county of J efierson and State "of Pennsylvania; have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Stove- Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in, stove lid lifters.
The primary object of the invention 1s the provision of a lifter for stove lids adapted for ready engagement therewith in such a manner as not to become detached during the transfer of the lid and preventing it from dropping.
A further object of the device is the provision of a lifter readily employed in connection with any form of stove lids and being removably locked within the receivlng groove of a lid when the latter 1S. provided with the usual transverse connection.
A still further object of the devlce is the provision of a lifter for stove lids that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, but which, at the same time, possesses great strength and utility, being capable of readily lifting the lids with little danger of dropping the same.
In the drawing forming a part of this application like-reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the same. Figure l is a side view of the device operatively attached to a stove lid, parts being broken away,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with parts shown in section,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line IV-IV of Fig. 2, and
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of edge portions of a stove lid showing diiferent forms of receiving sockets The present lifter is designed for removing and elevating a lid such as 10 from a stove 11 and comprising substantially the usual form of elongated handle 12 having a curved toe 13 adapted for reception within the receiving socket 14. of the lid 10 beneath the transverse bar or connector 15' thereof, opposite enlarged projections or shoulders 16 being arranged adjacent the base of the toe 13 for resting upon the upper face of the lid adjacent the outer edge of the socket 11 and at opposite sides thereof.
A longitudinal slot 17 is arranged in the specification of Letters Patent. mman flied seam. 1916! I, Fatented Nov. 6, 1917 Serial No-v 1371779? W in body .1 otthe h ndle 2 djacen he 13, having a post :19wadjus'tablyLsecured therein by means of a serewlorwasher 20. A block21 is similarly arranged adjustable withinthe slot 17 1. by meansn-f a-scnewand washer 22. A slotted rod or bolt 23 is longitudinally slidably positioned through a perforation 24 in the post 19, being in alinement with and adapted to enter an opening 25 arranged within the toe 13 adjacent the free end thereof the said bolt 23 being pivoted as at 26 to a cam-shaped lever 27 hinged within a slot 28 of the body 18 by means of a trunnion or rivet 29.
A coil spring 30 is connected between the lever 27 and the block 21, being attached to a loop 31 mounted upon the block 21 while its opposite end is secured within a perforation 32 arranged transversely through the lever 27. A roughened or knurled head 33 is provided for the lever 27, it being evident that the spring 30 normally projects the bar 23 forwardly with its free end arranged within the toe opening 25, while a rearward swinging movement imparted to the lever 27 by applying the thumb or finger of the operator to the knurled head 33 retracts the bar 23 against the action of the spring 30. When the device is in use, the tension on the spring may be decreased by the heat partially destroying the temper thereof, and by adjusting the block 21 in the slot 17, the tension on the spring may easily be restored. Both the block 21 and post 19 being adjustably mounted upon the handle body 18 said members may be readily adjusted for the accurate operation of the bolt 23 for holding the same normally projected, and at which times the forward face 34 of the lever 27 is in abutting engagement with the forward end 35 of the slot 28.
A strong and serviceable device is arranged, the operation of which will be apparent from this detailed description thereof, it being understood that when the form of lid shown in Fig. 5 is employed the bar 23 retains the toe 13 within the socket 14 of the lid by overlying the connector 15 thereof, as best illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The lifter is employed in the usual manner in connection with lids 10 of the form shown in Fig. 6 and in which the socket 14 thereof is provided with opposite arranged lugs 15 beneath which the toe 13 is engaged, while the lid retaining means,
arranged upon the present handle, offers no obstruction Whatever to such use thereof.
What I claim as new is.
A stove lid lifter including a handle having an apertured curved lower end, and having an opening substantially midway the ends thereof, an apertured lever fulcrun'ied Within said handle opening, and adapted to engage at its forward side, the forward Wall of the opening, said handle further having a slot adjacent the curved lower end thereof, an apertured member and a post adnee le-ijustahly mounted in said slot, the apertures 01" the handle end, lever and member being in alinement, a rod pivotally mounted inthe lever aperture and normally projecting through the apertured member and apertured lower end, and a contractile spring connected at its ends to the lever and post for holding the rod projected through the curved end aperture.
