UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
EUBEN RIBENJAMIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO BENJAMIN ELECTRIC;` MANUFACTURING COMPANY. 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ILUMINATIN'G DEVICE.
1 o au, w/ rom zt may concern: i
`Be it 4known that I, REUBEN B. BEN- JAMIN, a citizen of. the United States` residing `at-Chicago1 in the county of Cook and State` of' Illinois. have invented new and useful Improvements in Illuminating Devices` ot' which the following is a full. clear. concise7 and exact description." reference be ing had to the accompany1ngdrawing. forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to .illuminating devices, and more specifically to automobile lamps having concave reflectors.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide an improved device which will preventthe glare. due to the upwardly and forwardly extending rays. and which will redirect these rays forwardly and laterally to furnish thenecessary light for illuminating the rmidwayat the sides of the vehicle aml fortnruing corners.
ln the drawings. in which llrav'e shown one embodiment of my inventionV Figure 1 is a vertical transversesecl;ion of a lamp on the line"1-'1 ot Fig. E2:
Fig. 2 is a vertical axial section' on the line Q-Q of Fig. 1: and
F ig. 3 is a horizontal line 3-.3 ot' Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail I have shownniy invention .in connection with al lamp comprising a casing 10. a concave reflector 1l located in the casing. la frame 12 pivoted with respect to the casing 10, a front'glass 13 mounted in the frame 12. reflectors 1l and 15 which may be of sheet metal for reflecting forwardly and laterally the direct rays of light which would otherwise escape forwardly and upwardly in front of the reflector 1l. a screen or bar 1li for intercepting the direct rays of light which would `otherwise escape for.- wardly and upwardly in front of the reflector' 15. a supporting plate 17 for the reflectors 1l and 15 and the screen 1G. and an electric light 1S suitably supported` and located with respect to the `refiector 11. The reflector 11 comprises a cona've portion 19 which may be parabolic in vertical axial seetion so that the rays reflected therefrom will extend substantially in horizontal planes5 and a horizontal sectionof which may be slightly more di 'ergent than a"parabola so that the reflected7 Specification of Letters Patent.
axial section on the rays will diverge slightly. laterally, and a' spherical portgion 20 in the Patented oct. 3o, 1917.
rear ot the light 18 and substantiallyvv concentric with'tlie source of light. The ref flector 14 maybe formed of sheet metal bent to substantially a V-shape and having its ends secured at 21 to the-supporting plate cept the direct light which'would otherwise y The arms of this V are curved slightly 'as shown at 22 in Fig. 2, and these curved escape forwardlygand upwardly in Yfront-ot i 1- the concave reflector 11. as indicated by the `line C, Fig. 2,
and the linel), Fig. 3. The reflector 15 is also V-shaped in cross section and 1s secured at 2l to the plate 17. The
rear edge "25ct this reflector is shaped so as to intercept'the direct light which wouldotherwise escape torwardly and upwardly in front of the reflector 1i as indicated by-v the line E. Fig; 2, and the line F. Fig. 3.
The front edge :26- of the ifeiiector 15 is shaped so as to intercept the vdirect light which would otherwise `escape forwardly and upwardly above the upper edge ot' the i screen 1G. as indicated b v the line (l, Fig. Q. rl`he curved portionsl -2T of the reflector'L` are shapedand disposed so as to reflect the. light which falls Aon them forwardly and lilterally, as indicated by the lines H, H', I, f .F ig. 1.
The support 17 may be eut away as indicated at 27, so as to `interfere as little f aspossible with the rays of. light and may be secured to the reflector ll'by having its-ends` 1* inserted in slots Q9 in the reflectoizsprings '30 secured to the reflector 11 being provided i to hold the support in .position endwise` these springs yielding to permit .the insertion of the support. y f
In use therays of light falling on the reflector portionfli) are reflected horizontally,
as indicated by lthe lines J. K Fig. 2. the
source of light being located in substantially the' focus of the vertical parabolic section of the concave reflector, and are caused to diverge laterally slightly as indicated by the lines L, M, Fig. 3, due to the greater divergence of the concave, reflector. I l
The disposition ofthe retlecto'rs 14 and 155 is such as to interfere very 'slightly' 4with the rays reilected from the concave reflectorV 11, as they are arranged'so that .their edges 110 horizontal section of the. 101i Vare presented tothe nearly parallei rays of "light from vthe reflefftonportion lf), their intersections with planes through the 'axis ofthe reflector 1l heilig substantially pai'.- allel to this axis. These reflectors intercept substantially all of the direct light above the horiaontal plane and in front vof the re- `flector portion lf) and direct it' forwardly and-laterally as indicated-by7 the lines A, A, B and H, Il', I, Fig. l', to furnish the necessary light. for illuminating .the roadway at the sides of thc vehicle and for turningl corners. i
Having thus described my inventionuvhat I claim as new and desire to securediy Letters Patent is :.-f
