Upon turning the adjusting screw D against the tension of its actuating spring D the incline of the teeth 12 rides against the incline of the locking dog E, forcing the ment with the ratchet teeth 12, until said lug is released manually, from its retaining check 14. This device facilitates the use of thenwrench in close quarters, when there may not be room for the hand to turn the screw.
A pin, a (Figs. 1,2 and?) is inserted in the handle end of the shank A to prevent the movable jaw parting company with it.
F is the removable pipe jaw, shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 12. The solid operative part, 7, has its back straight to fit the face of the fixed jaw B, its face f, beveled and serrated and. made somewhat shorter than the length of the jaw B from the lower edge of the shank A to the tip, so that the square shoulder, f forming the top thereof, leaves room between it and the lower edge of the shank A when the jaw is placed into position. Into this shoulder is inserted a shouldered movable pin, F the shoulder passing within the bore which forms its seat and the reduced part, surrounded by a coiled spring which tends to push the pin outward and cause it to act as a plunger impinging on the lower surface of the shank A. From the shoulder f extends at each side to the head of the jaw B, a prong, f its back in line with-the back of the part 7, extended at a right angle, by an extension f over the head of the jaw and terminating ina hooked lug P, so as to clip said head closely. The distance from the inner or contact edges of the arms 7 to the shoulder f is at least as much greater than the lengthof the hook lugs i so that the jaw F may be raised against the pressure of the plunger F until the hooks clear the head of thefixed jaw, when the jaw F may be disengaged from its position on the fixed aw. I
l/Vhile the movable jaw F is in its position on the fixed jaw B, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the plunger F holds it. there and forms an elastic seat which assists in relaxing' the grip upon the pipe when it is desired-to reverse the action or remove the wrench.
a The operation of the wrench does not require much further elucidation. The adjusting screw D is turned againstthe pres sure of the spring D until the plain face 9 faces the rack (4 The jaw C may then be slid along the shank A in any direction and set against a nut or other object to be oper ated upon; the adjusting screw is then released and the spring D will turn it back and throw the threads into gear with the rack. The latter will allow the screw to turn until set close and lost motion is taken up and then hold it automatically.
The operationof the removable pipe jaw needs no further explanation after what has been said in connection with the description of the same. v v
I claim as my invention 1. In awrench, the combination of a shank having rack teeth, a fixed jaw on one end of said shank, a movable jaw slotted to slide on said shank and having a gap in its lower part, said gap recessed in its upper part and having bearings for pintles in the faces of the lower part, a pintled adjusting screw journaleda in said bearings and gearing into the rack on the shank and having the threadson two adjacent sides cut away to form flat faces at an approximately right angle to each other, a spring coiled upon one of the pintles of said screw with one end held in the enlarged pintle bearing and the other end bent and inserted inthe end of the screw body and tending to throw the screw threads into gear with the rack, ratchet teeth in the other end of the screw body, a dog embedded in and held slidingly in the lower part of the movable jaw, a lug on said dog projecting below the surface of the part in which it is embedded and moving in a checked slot and a spring at one endof said dog pressing the same into engagement with said ratchet,
