Description

TATES' PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN G. DEVOE AND TIMOTHY ROGERS, OF FREDERIOKTOWN, OHIO, AND JOHN G. BEALS, OF SEARSPORT, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,342, dated March 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN G. DEVOE and 'lrMornY Roenns, ofFredericktown,Ohio, and JOHN C. BEALS, of Searsport, Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon in akin ga part of this specificatiou.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a metallic fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our fence; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the base of the fence-post.
The base of our fence-post consists of a bottom disk, A, with upright flanges B 13, standing at right angles with each other, and having a disk, 0, on top, this top disk being of smaller diameter than the bottom disk, the whole cast together in one piece, with an eye, a, on the.
upper side of the top disk. This eye a is for the reception of a rod, I), which passes up through the hollow post I), where it enters an ornamental knob, E, which is screwed on the end of the rod, and tightens allthe parts together. The posts D D may be made of sheet metal, or cast, as may be desired. Each post may be made in one or two parts, corrugated, fluted, or plain, and provided on opposite sides with flanges d (1, extending the entire length of the post. In the lower edge of the post are made notches to fit over the flanges B B on the base immediately outside of the top disk 0, the interior diameter of the post at the lower end being such that the post will just fit over said top disk. G G are longitudinal bars, which clamp the pickets H 11. These clamping-bars may be made of sheet metal, halfround bar-iron, or cast, and are to be fastened together with bolts, screws, or rivets, the ends being fastened to the flanges d d of the posts. The pickets H H may be made of any ornamental design, corrugated, rolled, stamped, or finished from the finishing rolls; and between the pickets are placed ornaments I I, of any desired pattern.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the posts D D with flanges d d, clampingbars G G, pickets H H, and ornaments I I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the base A B O with eye a, post D with flanges d cl, rod 1), knob E, clampingba-rs G G, and pickets H H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands this 16th day of January, 1872.
BENJAMIN G. DEVOE. TIMOTHY ROGERS. JOHN G. BEALS. WVitnesses DANIEL STRUBLE, A. GREENLEE.
