provements 1n Printing Devices, of which the followlng 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin printing devices for use in addressing machines.
Printing devices of this character have been made as illustrated in Patent No. 1,036,118, dated August 20, 1912, and comprising a plurality of grooves extending from top to bottom of the device to receive type constituting the address form, and a side extension to carry information cards. Considerable expense is involved in maintaining a supply of type for correcting and replacing addresses in these devices and this work requires more or less skill. The owner of an outfit comprising these printing devices is at present compelled to adhere to the loose type method of making the forms in correcting and replacing addresses because of the necessity of maintaining uniformity in his printing devices so that they will all properly operate in the addressing machine.
It is the object of my invention to reduce the cost of providing and maintaining the addresses in an outfit comprising printing devices of the character above mentioned by providing printing plates having the address form stamped in relief thereon which can be used interchangeably on these printing devices with the loose type.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a printing device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a blank printing plate;
Fig. 4; shows another form of the frame with a printing plate thereon.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates the frame of the printing device, comprising the arms 6 having downward extensions a plurality of ribs 8 forming intermediate channels 9 to recelve the lines of type, flanges 10, 11, and lips 12 to receive and hold the cards 13, 14. The card 13 preferably bears an impression of the address form and the card 1 1 may bear any desired informat on. The frame is also provided with spacing Specification of Letters Patent.

flanges '15 of} suitable character. The address devi'ce'thus described and illustrated is substantially the same as that shown in the-patent abovementioned and my invention consists in the provision of a printing plate especially adapted for use .in an address frame of this kind in place of the loose type for the reasons mentioned.
The printing plate 16 is provided with flanges 17 18, at its edges to engage the shoulders .8 on the outer ribs 8 of the frame and the plate may be held in place on the frame by frictional engagement therewith or by providing one or more lips 19 at the edge of the frame-or by stamping a spring tongue 20 out of the frame to engage a recess 21 in the plate. It may be suflicient for ordinary purposes to rely upon frictional engagement of the plate with the frame but the lip, or the spring tongue, or both may be employed if desired. The printing characters are stamped in relief on the printing plate and if the printing plate is intended to carry the salutation in addition to the address I preferably terminate the flange, such as 18, at 18 to facilitate the stamping of the Salutation in the plate.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the bed for the printing plate is formed by the ribs but if the frame is not intended for loose type it will not be necessary to provide these ribs and intermediate channels and the bed may be struck up as shown at 22 in Fig. 4: with an end flange 23 to hold the plate in place.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description that the printing plates may be readily substituted for the loose type in making corrections, replacements and additions in an outfit having printing devices of this character and at much less cost than would be involved in maintaining a supply of type and setting up an address therefrom. My invention also enables the continued use of these frames and the printing devices bearing the printing plates may be used with the devices having loose type addresses and in the same machine without requiring any adjustment or attention. If additional frames are required in such an outfit I would prefer to provide'the frame illustrated in Fig. 4: because it costs less to manufacture than the frame illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Thus my invention not only provides for maintaining an outfit having the loose type at m c v ess cost han Q l ibe l r difj the loosetype-"method Were continued but it also enables the OW'IIGI" of suchan out-fit;
to readily change over to the printing plate.
method.
I claim:
of the device, and a printing plate having type characters stamped in relief thereon and provided: at its edges with flanges to igaapae engage the edges of said bed, one of said flanges extending P from anend 'of the plate part way of the lengthof-the plate to leave a, space for type characters to be stamped onthe'plate closely adjacent to the edge thereof and to lie close to the edge of the bed; JOHN B.
