APPARATUS FR S'JEAIVHNG?k MATERIAL.
Application mea May 13, 1916. seriai No. 97,403.
To all whom z' may concern: v
Be it known that we, FEDER J'. BUE and HnRvY M. TrDwELL, citizens of the United? State of America, residing at Pomeroy, in the county of Garfield and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and uscful Improvements in an Apparatus for Steaming Material, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an .apparatus for steaming material such as beans and the like, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient mechanism for softening and partially cooking the beans prior to passing the same to the rolls. l
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient means for causing the beans to pass through a steam filled receptacle and in this way become softened and partially cooked.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bean softening mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 8-8, of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
By referring to thevdrawings it will be seen that 1 designates the outer wall or cylinder, which is rovided with a steam inlet aperture 3, wlthin which aperture 3 fits an inlet pipe 4. An inner wall 2 is placed within the outer wall 1 and is held in spaced relation thereto by means of the' ller bands 5 fitting between the walls 1 and 2 at the upper and lower ends thereof.
The wall 2 is provided with a plurality of apertures or ports 6 for permitting the passage yof steam through the wall 2 from the inlet pipe 4L.
A steam discharge or distributing pipe 7 is positioned centrally within the inner wall 2, and this steam discharge pipe 7 is provided with a cone-shaped upper end 8 for constituting a means for shedding the beans and causing the same to drop upon either side of the steam pipe 7. The pipe 7 is provided with a plurality of steam discharge apertures 9 for causing the steam to be discharged from the pipe 7 and across and into the inner portion of the receptacle, the steam then passing out through the bottom Specification of Letters Batent. l
of the heater. A plurality of bracing bars 10 are securedto the inner face of the wall 2 and to the outer face of the steam pipe 7 to constitute a brace therefor. A plurality of steam inlet pipes 11 are secured to the pipe 7 diametrically opposite to the lbraces 10, and by means of the pipes l1 and braces 10 it will be seen that the pipe 7 will be eiiciently supported in its proper position. The pipes 11 are connected to the pipe 7 near its upper and lower ends, and the opposite ends of these pipes 11 are connected to a vertically extending pipe 12, which pipe 12 is also connected to a steam supply pipe 13. The steam supply pipe 13 may be connected to any suitable heating coil or other suitable means which may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention, for it is not desirous of limiting the present invention to any particular or specific form of heating means.
A cover 14 is placed upon the top of the steaming receptacle and is provided with a depending annular ange 15 fitting over the upper edge of the outer wall 1 as illustrated in Fig. 2. The cover 14 is also provided with an linner depending collar 16 which is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the inner wall 2. The cover 14C is provided at its upper end with a spout 17 which spout is connected to the usual bin for discharging beans down into the steaming receptacle.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that as the beans are discharged down through the chute or spout 17, the beans will fall through the inner receptacle 18 formed by the inner wall 2, and the steam discharged from the apertures 9 and V6 will be considerably condensed and passed out through the bottom vof the heating receptacle. By the beans falling down through the entire length of the inner receptacle 18, it will be obvious that the beans will be considerably softened by the steam and also partially cooked, by means of the superheated steam through which the beans fall.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:-
An apparatus for steaming material comprising an outer cylinder, an inner wall provided with a plurality of closely arranged perforations, an inlet pipe communicating with said outer wall and adapted to supply steam to the space between said inner and outer wall for forcing steam through the apertures formed in said inner wall, a cenratented oet. ic, 1917.
trally locatedstean pipe braced and sup-- ported centrally of saiol inner Wall, said centrally located steam pipe provided with a plurality of closely arranged` perforations,
a steam supply pipe communicating With said inner wall whereby grain clroppecl 1f) through said apparatus Will be acted upon by a series of oppositely opposed jets of steam.
In testimony' whereof We hereunto aHix our signatures. y
